At approximately 11:30 am EDT, the White House removed a petition about the TSA airport screening procedures from the White House "We the People" website. About 22,500 of the 25,000 signatures necessary for a response from the Administration were obtained when the White House unexpectedly cut short the time period for the petition. The site also went down for "maintenance" following an article in Wired that sought support for the campaign.
http://epic.org/2012/08/white-house-pulls-down-tsa-pet.html
http://epic.org/2012/08/white-house-pulls-down-tsa-pet.html
land of the free and home of the brave eh?
Is anyone surprised? They've done fuck-all with the petition site since it was opened. All it's done is give us a false sense of democracy.
implying we the people isn't completely useless. if it actually reached the goal all people would have gotten is a half hearted reply as to why its a good thing to have screenings.
I'm sorry but have any of these petitions ACTUALLY have had an impact? Do they even work?
it failed to meet the signature threshold

About 22,500 of the 25,000 signatures necessary for a response from the Administration were obtained when the White House unexpectedly cut short the time period for the petition.
Gee, that must be kind of hard when they cut its time.
I'm sorry but have any of these petitions ACTUALLY have had an impact? Do they even work?
No, most of em are trolls anyway.
Change.org is far more effective. That's just my opinion.
So why did they even make this website? So far it's failed to even create the illusion of bringing the people and the White House closer together. What kind of petitions were they expecting to see, anyway?
I hate this country and it's corruption.
land of the free and home of the brave eh?
What does this have to do with freedom? How is anyone being oppressed by this petition failing (if that's what you're insinuating)?
Is anyone surprised? They said from the get go that the website was just an outlet for asking questions and getting simple answers for them. Not once did they claim they would act on a petition. What kind of petitions were they expecting to see, anyway?
Once again, the point of this website has always been to answer questions. They said that from the start.
I hate this country and it's corruption.
What the fuck are you even saying?
What the fuck are you even saying?
Pulling a legitimate petition down before it reaches it's goal? It's pretty basic...

They said that from the start.

We the People provides a new way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country.
Taking action on issues as a response to a petition translates to "asking questions and getting simple answers" apparently. Besides, your missing the fact that they removed a petition before it acquired the necessary signatures to possibly prevent it from being queued for a response.
Because they're disregarding and in a way, silencing the opinion of thousands for their own interests. That is not how democracy works.
But that has nothing to do with democracy because they aren't actually doing anything with the petitions.
Pulling a legitimate petition down before it reaches it's goal? It's pretty basic...
I don't see what this has to do with corruption.
Taking action on issues as a response to a petition translates to "asking questions and getting simple answers" apparently.
-Nevermind, I just found looked on the website and found this, as well as numerous other references to "issuing a response". I haven't seen anything about "taking action"(though issuing a response can be considered taking action). Can you give me the link to where you found that quote on the website?-
The right to petition your government is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. We the People provides a new way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. We created We the People because we want to hear from you. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it’s sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.

Because they're disregarding and in a way, silencing the opinion of thousands for their own interests. That is not how democracy works.
it doesn't matter how democracy works, this is a republic
it doesn't matter how democracy works, this is a republic
cuz' democracy is baaad oh no tyranny of the majority. We better like when corporations write our laws. much safer.
cuz' democracy is baaad oh no tyranny of the majority. We better like when corporations write our laws. much safer.
Yeah, actually, direct democracies are shit.
cuz' democracy is baaad oh no tyranny of the majority. We better like when corporations write our laws. much safer.
Direct Democracies can become incredibly dangerous. Representative Democracies are better, but not when the people in charge can be bought out by corporations.
Direct Democracies can become incredibly dangerous. Representative Democracies are better, but not when the people in charge can be bought out by corporations.
I want to be able to at least vote through the internet during elections. It is insane how we still have to check out of work to go vote, wait in line, etc.
Is anyone surprised? They've done fuck-all with the petition site since it was opened. All it's done is give us a false sense of democracy.
Precisely what I told the complainers on reddit. The whole thing was a farce, a distraction to let people think they really cared what we wanted. They've ignored big ticket items that have surpassed the goal. This is just admitting flat out they don't give a damn what we think.
I want to be able to at least vote through the internet during elections. It is insane how we still have to check out of work to go vote, wait in line, etc.
It's a pretty important process.

Ballot shows up in your mailbox, you fill it out, mail it back before the deadline, tada you voted good job
land of the free and home of the brave eh?
We have heard this hundreds of times. It's not very funny.
Around here we do mail-in ballot. Ballot shows up in your mailbox, you fill it out, mail it back before the deadline, tada you voted good job
Best way to vote ever. [editline]12th August 2012[/editline]
We have heard this hundreds of times. It's not very funny.
It's pretty sad, actually. It should have never been funny.
it doesn't matter how democracy works, this is a republic
stop saying this, a republic is a democracy
stop saying this, a republic is a democracy
Not exactly, since a republic can have non-democratic ways of choosing representatives, but the US is a democratic republic, so the point is moot.
Not exactly, since a republic can have non-democratic ways of choosing representatives, but the US is a democratic republic, so the point is moot.
No it's not. It's an electoral republic. The people don't vote for the president, so you can't really call it democratic.
