US man faces jail time for attempting to forcefully remove Muslim woman's veil

An American man who allegedly attempted to pull off a Saudi Muslim woman’s abaya has been charged with ethnic intimidation and assault, according to a New York newspaper.
Jonathan Patrick Deuel, 29, was allegedly one of three men who surrounded the 26-year-old Saudi woman when she was walking with her 5-year-old daughter to her car at a shopping centre car park in Meridian Township, a suburb in the state of Michigan, on July 19.
They then attempted to remove her abaya, the traditional veil and cloak worn by some Muslim women in public.
The woman was allegedly knocked to the ground while her attackers shouted slurs and cursed at her. The men fled after the woman’s husband heard her cry out for help.
Muslim activists have called the incident a “hate crime”, New York Daily News said.
The woman was hospitalised for 36 hours, complaining of chest pain and a numbness in her left arm.
Local police said Deuel would be the only suspect charged over the attack.
He faces up to two years’ jail and a $5000 fine for ethnic intimidation, the newspaper said.
Council on American-Islamic Relations Michigan executive director Dawud Walid welcomed the charges against Deuel but was “disappointed” the two other men accused of being involved would not be charged.
“There are two other reported culprits and neither one of them has been charged,” Walid was quoted as saying.
“She’s recuperated from the physical injuries, which weren’t very severe,” Walid said. “But she’s still traumatised mentally.”
Walid said the Saudi family was living in the US while the husband studied a PhD.
This is what the traditional Saudi abaya and veil look like, as mentioned in the article. The article, for whatever reason, chose to post a picture of a niqab (The face-covering showing only the eyes). This is more appropriate:

It's bad enough that these people think it's okay to intimidate and hurt a helpless person for dressing differently. But in front of her 5 year old daughter? Disgusting.
This is pretty much definition of assault, even if ignoring the ethnic undertones.
I've heard many Arabic women like wearing these, and I can certainly see why. They're pretty rad.
He just really needed to see her face

It makes them feel somewhat protected.
In some cultures/societies, beauty can be a curse.

But he doesn't have the right to see shit?

My female friends in Qatar tell me they wear pajamas under them so they look presentable while being comfortable. Genius.

some, in the US at least, just wear it because it's what they're used to wearing.
they feel naked without it, out in public.

He could see her face, she wasn't wearing a niqab or burqa.

God damn brilliant. Clothing really is where western society draw the short straw. Whose idea was pants?!
Well even ignoring the ethnic aspect this is assault no less. I could get arrested if I pulled down your pants in public.
While this may not have been the case here, some westerners seem to wrongly believe every veil-wearing woman is abused and oppressed into covering themselves up, and that they are doing them a service trying to "liberate" them in various ways.

Oh shit, sign me the fuck up.
I don't get why you'd do this to a person, in front of their kid as well. It's up to them what they want to wear, and if - sadly - they are being forced by their husband or w/e, attacking her and pulling it off isn't going to somehow help her.
Coming from an Arabic background, I know plenty of girls who wear hijab. Almost all of them like wearing it, and only a select few don't like wearing it (I feel sorry for them, since their parents care more about mumbo jumbo in the sky, than their own kids happiness). A lot of them feel beautiful in hijab, and, like joes said, feel naked without it.

A lot of women are wearing these around where I live, I don't have any problem with it.
Also the veil in general isn't specifically muslim, it's a cultural thing. Hell, wearing a scarf to hide your hair was also common practice in France from late 18th century to mid 20th.

yeah veils and headscarfs are just an outdated thing not really a muslim thing, give em a few centuries and they'll grow out of it too

Hard to predict fashion in a few centuries, this minority's clothing could become popular spontaneously among non-muslims, doubt it, but who knows.
America is, funnily enough, still a free country. She's allowed to wear that if she wants to. There's nothing wrong with wearing such a garment and the dirtbag that tried to rip it off of her deserves jailtime. Good riddance.
I don't like those black robes at all. Especially headscarf, it's a shame how it covers hair. Hair is pretty.
I much prefer western clothing culture.
Not that I have anything against their dress preferences, I just think the stuff I see around here is prettier. I'm not a huge fan of uniform robes.
Hijabs are pretty cool, they can have some good designs and they aren't like burkas.
I'm not a huge fan of uniform robes.
They're not uniform.
They come in a myriad of designs and styles.
My girlfriend did Muslim stuff for a while and she likes it because she doesn't feel the eyes of men checking her out when she's covered up

Care to link or show some varying designs? All I see on Google are insignificantly different version of mostly black robes.

Still, the biggest difference is color or some kind of colorful pattern. Not uniform, strictly speaking, not exactly hugely varied either.

Oh, yeah I suppose that does add a little bit of diversity.

Even assuming that would be the case, shirts aren't the only piece of clothing people in the west wear, you know.

neither are hijabs
neither are hijabs
Not exactly contrasting design with other pieces of their wardrobe.
Sounds like the man in the article was not abaya'n the law.

A lot of these head dresses are a symbol of the oppression women in eastern cultures face. They are not so rad in more cases than you would think.

huh
