https://steamdb.info/blog/source2-announcement/
Valve announces a number of product and technologies at this week's Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. "We continue to see very strong growth in PC Gaming, with Steam growing 50% in the last 12 months," said Gabe Newell, Valve's president. "With these announcements we hope that we are helping build on that momentum." Steam Machines, Windows PCs, Macs, and Linux PCs will be able to take advantage of a new product announced at GDC called Steam Link. Designed to extend your Steam experience to any room in the house, Steam Link allows you to stream all your Steam content from any PC or Steam Machine on the same home network. Supporting 1080p at 60Hz with low latency, Steam Link will be available this November for $49.99, and available with a Steam Controller for an additional $49.99 in the US (worldwide pricing to be released closer to launch). ... Valve announced the Source 2 engine, the successor to the Source engine used in Valve's games since the launch of Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2. "The value of a platform like the PC is how much it increases the productivity of those who use the platform. With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity. Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favorite games," said Valve's Jay Stelly. "We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers. This combined with recent announcements by Epic and Unity will help continue the PCs dominance as the premiere content authoring platform."
at least include the part about source 2
Valve announced the Source 2 engine, the successor to the Source engine used in Valve's games since the launch of Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2. Hardly an announcement, I'll wait till we get the dumbed down retard friendly trailer that shows off all of its features instead of them just saying they've announced it.
so steam link is a basically just a cheap box that uses the in-home game streaming they have been working on? thats pretty cool i guess. im more interested in the actual technologies for the new engine
We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers.
yes
I hope there's original Source compatibility, or else there'll be a lot of materials and models to convert. And I'd rather not go through that tedious process (should it exist).

Isn't that what chromecast does for android? edit: Apparently I'm wrong.
Chromecast is awful. It doesn't actually stream the video, though there is a very crippled feature that offers it and less than half works (no audio, shit speed). Chromecast just connects the TV to web content over wifi. You use your android phone/tablet as a remote controller basically.
get source 2 hype though. I hope it comes out soon enough that everyone can start developing games.
"We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers.**
With locked engine code**
I kind of want to abandon my Unity game in favor of Source 2 right now. My game has been trying to replicate the general feel of the Source Engine.
Also, I'm sorry, but where is the source for this article? www.steampowered.com/universe is just empty.
it was literally just said by valve at the games developers conference
Alright, I just didn't know. Thanks!
HL3 confirmed?
We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers.
Unity and UDK confirmed dead on March 3rd, 2015. Time of death: 4:00PM PST [sp]It's actually an excellent thing that these engines are being released for free, it allows the PC market to maintain its strong growth that we have seen these past few years.[/sp]
HL3 confirmed?
Every single time Half Life 3/Episode 3 is mentioned whenever Valve does something, release is pushed back another month.
What a roller coaster this day has been
I hope it comes out soon enough that everyone can start developing games.
well i think it doesnt matter when it will come out, people will develope games on it regardless of its release date :v:
With locked engine code**
idk about Source2, but doesn't Source1 use some third party code that Valve can't legally make open? That's what I heard anyway, don't know if there's any truth to that.
I wonder what kind of licensing deal they're going to do when people make Source Engine 2 games. Probably a requirement to publish on Steam, but do you guys think they'll take an additional percentage? Or is the estimated 25-30% they get off Steam sales enough?
http://store.steampowered.com/app/353380/ The page on Steam Link is up on Steam. It looks like an external hard drive.
Steam Link sounds awesome and the fact that Source2 will support Vulkan is also really awesome!
Also as part of supporting PC gaming, Valve announced that it will be releasing a Vulkan-compatible version of the Source 2 engine. Vulkan is a cross-platform, cross-vendor 3D graphics API that allows game developers to get the most out of the latest graphics hardware, and ensures hardware developers that there is a consistent, low overhead method of taking advantage of products. Vulkan, previously called Next Generation OpenGL, is administered by the Khronos Group, along with other standards such as OpenCL, OpenGL, and WebGL.
Valve now has their own physics engine called Rubikon which they have been talking about since last GDC.

Perfect picture and audio. Even when using my Plex server.

Unless they bring something gamechanging to the scene, you can not, and will not be able to cripple UE4 at the speed it's moving at the minute.
Steamlink releaste date:
Release Date: Nov 2015
An announcement wasn't even necessary. We knew they were working on it. We're just waiting for them to show it off with Half Life 3's release.
Seeing as how advanced and sophisticated the engine is compared to Source 1 I can't wait to behold the stuff the good old modding community will cook up when it's released officially Maybe a massive port of Half-Life 2?
SFM 2? Please for the love of God...
