We all know what a bong is, right? What about a bubbler? We know what that is too, right? But wait, a bong bubbles through water too, so couldn't it be called a bubbler? Or, wait, shouldn't the bubbler be called a bong? My head hurts.
Bongs really aren't complicated things. A bong consists of a bowl going into a down stem, which goes into water, which then bubbles the smoke through the water into a smoke chamber, then into your dirty whore mouth. These are, of course, the basics of any bong. With the advancement in bong technology we've created a ton of new things that can be added to bongs to make them smoother, hit fatter, brew fatter, or even get you higher.
I'm going to list off a bunch of bong terms that most of you should know, but some of you don't.
[b]Bubbling[/b]:
Any time smoke passes through water through the act of bubbling, it is being cooled. Making for a smoother, much less harsh hit.
[b]Diffusion[/b]:
This isn't science class so I'll keep this simple. Sometimes smoke is split into different paths to follow, bubbled, and then joined together once again in a smoke chamber (defined below). This action is called diffusion and it not only cools the smoke through bubbling, but makes the smoke less dense so that you can handle much more of it, but feel it much less. Diffusion is also better on the lungs.
[b]Bowl[/b]:
The bowl-shaped glass piece holding the weed. Bowls can be connected to the stem using either a glass-on-glass connection or a glass on rubber/plastic connection. Generally, glass-on-glass is considered the better connection.
[b]Down Stem[/b] (a.k.a stem, tube, thingy in the water):
This what the bowl usually goes into, the down stem is the only stem in the bong that goes into the water. If there are two stem-type things on a bong, the down stem is the one that is touching the water.
[b]Smoke Chamber[/b]:
Any extended enlarged space in a bong where smoke can build up is a smoke chamber (or just chamber).
[b]Ice Catcher[/b]:
Glass prongs sticking inside the neck of the bong so that you can throw some ice in there and the prongs will catch the ice. The ice catcher is located in the neck of a bong, you just toss your ice on top of it. When the ice melts, it turns into ice cold bong water.
[b]Choke[/b] (a.k.a. shotgun, shotty, carb):
Holding the choke reduces airflow to just the bowl. This means that when you suck all the oxygen out of your bong, there is only pure, marijuana smoke coming into it. Releasing the choke adds a second source of airflow, allowing clean, outside air to come in at push all the marijuana smoke into your mouth. Basically, it's a hole on the side of a bong - hold this to brew your toke.
Along with these simple, basic elements of a bong new technology has added advanced bong functions. Here I will introduce and discuss each one.

Sometimes bowls are equipped with an dome-type bottom, and a connection piece off the the side of the dome. This is made so that the ash from your bowl can fall through, his the dome, and stay in the dome instead of falling through into the bong water.
Some ash catchers go the extra distance and act as smoke diffusers as well as ash catchers.

This ash catcher actually has a tube going down from the bowl, and splits into 4 different tubes. The smoke will go through the tube and bubble up and then down the stem (the connection piece is hidden behind the ash catcher in this picture).
People stack these ash catchers/diffusers with other, smaller smoke chambers before the smoke even reaches the down stem. Usually this is just for show, but sometimes these chambers will have diffusers built into them as well.

We've all seen these. Those things that are in the middle of a bong, they bubble, they look sweet, and if you have a lot of them your bong is good, but what the fuck are they and how the fucking hell do they work, god damnit!
Perculators work through diffusion (defined above). There are so so many different types and kinds of percs, so I'll just explain the basic principle.

A basic, standard perc consists of 2 parts, the 'up stem' and the 'container'. I've quoted these names because I completely made them up right now, but they seem logical. In the diagram above, if you follow the arrows from the bowl, the smoke goes from the first chamber, up a tube (the up stem) and then into a sort of mini-chamber (the container). The container is just a tube, significantly bigger than the up stem, with holes in the bottom. Picture a film roll container, flipped upside-down with holes round the top. The container fits inside the bong with room to spare all around so that the smoke can bubble up through the holes and fill the next chamber.
There are simpler percs which consist of the smoke following a tube, being split up, bubbled, and then moved into a second chamber. [b]Wherever there is a perc, there is a division between two chambers.[/b]
