America’s premier game-design program canceled an all-star industry panel last week for the sole reason that the lineup was all-male.
The University of Southern California was able to attract some of the biggest talent in the industry to their April 20 event: head game designer at Blizzard, Jeffrey Kaplan; CEO of Riot Games, Brandon Beck; and head of Infinity Ward, David Stohl — among others.
As reported by the Daily Trojan, not only would students have been able to hear from these titans of the game industry, they could have showcased their games to the panelists as well.

“Both males and females I talked to were really upset that they did not get to meet some of their idols,” said an anonymous USC student majoring in computer science for game design who planned to attend the event. “It would have been the biggest names they could have gotten at this school.”
The student did not wish to be named, fearing reprisal from the games department.
“There really is a notion of censorship, but in this department you have to get on team projects to succeed and don’t want to anger the wrong people.”
The student went on to say that it was Professor Anthony Borquez who organized the event, but was told that he must get a female panelist to use event space at the games department. Borquez obliged, but due to a scheduling conflict, the female panelist backed out.
They probably should have had a backup female panelist if they had wanted one to be there so badly.
That sucks that it was canceled just because of that.
Completely and utterly inexcusable. What the fuck.
i'm guessing they're not coming back
sucks for all the students that wanted to see them
Wow, incredible. They just shut down an amazing panel for young talent to bridge out connections and get to meet some real titans from the industry just because there wasn't enough gender diversity on the panel.
Completely absurd. shame on you USC.
College sucks
At least they're rescheduling it. Hopefully that just means adding in new panelists, and not leaving any of the current line-up out.
Would it be fair to claim that this is more of an Authoritarian issue than a Liberal issue?

It's an Authoritarian Liberal issue
Isn't it just going to happen later with like +1 lady panelist? It's not full stop cancelled
[editline]28th April 2016[/editline]
“They claim they are rescheduling, but even if they are able to get the same talent, it is already too late for the graduating seniors.”
ah nevermind. thats really shitty

Considering most of those people are company presidents or VPs, you'll be hard pressed to get all of them back. Some may even see this as insulting.
Legitimate question, can someone name to me a major female legend of the gaming industry that isn't a music composer or sound designer?
(There are plenty of amazing female music composers in the gaming industry, such as Yoko Shimomura, but I can't think of anyone outside that field that is considered a major developer)

I would not be surprised if they all unanimously told them to go fuck themselves. I wouldn't put up with being discriminated against because of my sex or race, and I sure as fuck would not put up with it if I had millions of dollars.
I hope any men asked to attend the new panel say no

If I was a company executive and I was invited to do a panel that was cancelled four hours before it began because of something as minuscule and irrelevant as not being able to find a female panelist with an open schedule, I would probably not even respond to any further emails or calls they sent. That is beyond disrespectful. Absolutely inexcusable.
How did we get to this point where it seems that every american university is controlled by equal outcomes SJW types in some capacity, to the point where you can't even have an industry panel because boohoo there weren't any women on said panel. Too bad for the students I guess, is their loss. Ideally anyone who was invited previously will turn down an invite to speak again, that was a really petty reason to cancel the event on the school's part, and very rude to suddenly pull the rug out from under people who I'm sure made these plans months in advance.
Is it me or is American college just completely backwards and fucked?

They uhhh...aren't being discriminated against here guy. Slow your roll there. The panel was cancelled and is being rescheduled, they haven't made any mention of removing anybody from the panel to add a female member, just that they are looking for female games developers to add to the panel.
Shit gets cancelled and moved around all the time, it's not a discriminatory practice to reschedule something in hopes of adding more to the panel.
It's a bummer for the guys who will be graduating though, meeting some of the members of the panel would have been a neat experience. I'm sure the panel members would understand if someone who could have gone were to try and contact them directly, but it's not quite the same thing as they could just not respond after all.
This over the top college PC stuff really has to stop.

Legit the main problem they are going to have is how short notice the cancellation was. The panel members would have scheduled their days around this event, it suddenly not happening doesn't just mean free time, it means rescheduling shit so you can get stuff done.
Reschedules are usually quite accepted if you give people notice. This was barely even in the same universe as the world "notice".

They took an action based on the genders of the people present. How is that not literally discriminatory? "Privilege"?
Is it me or is American college just completely backwards and fucked?
Student Unions are a clusterfuck most of the time, plus the University loves pandering to the Left since that's where they make most of their money from.
If it meant that they would earn $5 more, Universities would announce their support for a communist dictatorship.

They aren't punishing the panel members for being male, they aren't trying to oppress them or any of their rights. They are rescheduling a private event. Sure, the reason is a bit eh, but it's still something understandable. The push to get women in to the various tech sectors is well underway, having examples of women who have done well in the games industry on the panel will only help the panel.
I wouldn't really say it was discrimination either. More like... very very poor event planning...

Just because they aren't totally calling it off forever doesn't make it not discriminatory. Inconveniencing people over gender political bullshit like this is going to do more damage to getting women in tech than men existing ever will.

I'd love to hear your explanation for this one tbh. Because I cannot work out how you came to that conclusion.
This isn't discriminatory. Time wasting? Totally. Rude? Certainly. Discriminatory? Fuck no.
If they had planned the event properly from the get-go they would have easily had more time to warn the panel members that they were rescheduling it and to look for female talent. But this seems quite disorganised in general.

It's absolutely not "understandable". The event was set up and promoted weeks in advance. Nobody brought up this problem until four hours before it started. Again, that's totally inexcusable behavior.
They completely wasted the time of executives of companies they probably rely on for internship placements. Instead of actually working with them and disciplining the professor who didn't follow their rules (as stupidly discriminatory as they are), they basically ruined the entire event by targeting the panelists and students for no reason, despite it not being their fault at all, solely because the panelists are male. To cancel the event on this basis is completely, 100% irrational. They are essentially blaming the panelists for being male, and pointing to that fact as if it were their problem. They don't control the fact that they are male, but it's still their fault for daring to be a man who wants to volunteer their time and knowledge for students excited to hear from them. But no, despite the fact that students are there to learn about game development from game developers, we can't have them do that if the game developers are all male, because that's not inclusive!
It also assumes that none of the panelists were coming to encourage women to join their company. The reason it was cancelled pending "reschedule" is because everybody on the panel had a penis and nobody had a vagina. That was the start and end of their decision-making process. They completely ignored the content of the panelists' speeches and focused entirely on their genders. How is that not discriminatory?
I hope any men asked to attend the new panel say no
I feel like the school would like that even better.
