Famitsu this week unveils Valkyria: Azure Revolution, a new entry in the Valkyria Chronicles tactical RPG series, as well as a remaster of the original Valkyria Chronicles for PlayStation 4. Further details have not yet leaked. Thanks, Famitsu. Update 5:31 a.m.: Valkyria Chronicles Remaster will launch for PlayStation 4 in Japan on February 10 for 4,990 yen. It will have high-resolution graphics, as well as downloadable content and trophies. Update 6:06 a.m.: Valkyria: Azure Revolution will launch for PlayStation 4 in Japan in winter 2016. Chronicles was so fucking good. I'd buy the sequel in a heartbeat if it got brought to PC.
Now including this, all five of my reasons for saving up for a PS4 haven't been released yet. Looking forward to more Valkyria.
Yes, yes yes! I loved VC I may just get a ps4 for this.
Fucking nice! Been hoping for a new Valkyria game to come out after enjoying the first one on PC.
Holy shit yesss
Hopefully the remaster won't make the pc version outdated. I hate it when they do that. They might as well remaster VC 2 and 3 while they're at it.
Hopefully the remaster won't make the pc version outdated. I hate it when they do that. They might as well remaster VC 2 and 3 while they're at it.
It sounds like more or less just the PC version but for the PS4.
Currently playing through VC on PC and really enjoying it, loved it on PS3 when I first got it and was bummed how all the sequels went to handheld. Though the lack of some kind of mid-mission checkpoint/save is really frustrating (Spend half an 45 minutes/1 hour on a mission to fail and restart from the beginning because of some trivial mistake). Would love to get another one on PC.
Update 9:22 a.m.: Details from Weekly Famitsu’s interview with director Takeshi Ozawa and chief producer Youichi Simosato have surfaced:
How work on a new Valkyria game began… Ozawa: “We wanted to do something new using Valkyria, and one of the things we’re putting in is a real-time system. Initially, we were considering real-time strategy, but we went with an RPG because we think that’s what more users will want to play.” This game’s connection to Valkyria Chronicles… Ozawa: “This time, we switched to an RPG. The concept of the battle system and the sensation of the battlefield are the same, but because it’s an RPG with simulation elements, you can experience the battlefield through a different perspective.” Regarding the flow of the game… Ozawa: “You get the feeling that you’re taking territory from a major power and expanding your scope. You’ll prepare at the base, go out to the field, achieve your objectives, and return to base. It’s similar to an RPG where you go into dungeons.” Regarding the world… Ozawa: “It’s completely different (from Valkyria Chronicles). This time, the key item known as Ragnite is not just used as an energy resource, but also has magical aspects. Valkyria are supernatural compared to humans, beings considered close to gods.” Shimosato: “I want them to become known as the Senjou series and Kakumei series.” (Note: This means the “Battlefield” series and “Revolution” series. In Japan, Valkyria Chronicles is called “Senjou no Valkyria,” or “Valkyria of the Battlefield,” while this new title is called “Aoki Kakumei no Valkyria,” or “Valkyria of the Azure Revolution.”) Regarding combat… Ozawa: “There are symbol encounters, but symbols are shown as a unit, and you can interact with a symbol before the encounter. You can snipe an enemy symbol, use a smokescreen to disable it, or shoot at it with a rifle to lure the enemy. Sniping is powerful, but on the battlefield it functions like an usable item so there are limits how often it can be used. “Battles are conducted by setting commands to buttons. They’re action-ish battles. It takes on the familiar form of recent RPGs. The maximum amount of party members is five. You control one of them, and the rest move based on a set thought process.” Shimosato: “As there are beings that transform into tanks, there are also weapons that imitate living things.” A message for fans… Shimosato: “We can’t announce it yet, but we’re commissioning music from a famous name.” Ozawa: “There are parts similar to Valkyria Chronicles, but because it’s largely different on the surface in a good way, we want you to enjoy this game with flat eyes as a new series.”
So, they are changing it to a rpg instead of the old system? And then they want you to have a flat eyes as a new series look on it? :what: Yeah, so this is basically not the thing most people(including me) were hoping for. edit " because we think that’s what more users will want to play." fuck
Fuck, i was hoping they would stick with the system they already had since that's what makes it so unqiue and i rarely even touch RPG's. And it's a reboot too? Not exactly helping...
I was mixed on Valkyrie Chronicles. I liked the war story but then they...put in stupid shit like the god damn pig.
It was pretty inevitable, since the PC version happened at all. "Big" Japanese console games don't get PC ports unless there's a current-gen port incoming.
If the Remaster gets properly updated stuff they better bring that onto the PC version. I'll probably buy it anyway, but still. as for Revolution, we will see how it plays out
Hopefully the remaster won't make the pc version outdated. I hate it when they do that. VC3 was probably my favorite game tied with the first, but since it was only released for the PSP like the second and never localized, I don't see it ever getting a remaster.
Please update the PC version with at least 1080p cutscenes. Those jaggies were jarring
VC3 was probably my favorite game tied with the first, but since it was only released for the PSP like the second and never localized, I don't see it ever getting a remaster.
It may well do, since it's still heavily wanted. It just probably won't be any time soon, which sucks ass.
This series is always doomed, isn't it? By some miracle it gets another shot, and they decide to release a completely different game in a completely different setting that destroys everything that was unique about the previous ones, and when that invariably sells like shit, it'll be dead for good. I'm gonna go cut myself.
I mean, I'm excited for more valkyria but this sounds pretty far removed from what I liked about VC. Its also disappointing that the remaster for PS4 is just VC1, and not all three. 2 is kinda meh but 3 is where I felt they really hit their stride with gameplay.

No western appeal and the diehards feel betrayed.
I don't feel remotely betrayed. Why don't we wait and see how it pans out as more info comes out before we decry it?
I don't see how you could look at that setting or those characters and not feel betrayed. This is the last game in the series. A promising return dies because sega is completely blind to what people loved about Valkyria Chronicles.
Game's gonna sell like shit. No western appeal and the diehards feel betrayed.
Or we're looking at Valkyria's Metroid Prime moment where we get a game that becomes the apex of the series?
I don't see how you could look at that setting or those characters and not feel betrayed.
Pretty easily. Because it's only a small tidbit of the whole world and anything could happen with it yet. Though it definitely has this element of "anime special snowflake" in the current mains that the previous games didn't have. We'll see how it plays out.
This is the last game in the series. A promising return dies because sega is completely blind to what people loved about Valkyria Chronicles.
Not necessarily. Maybe people going into full on knee-jerk "but it's different!!" mode won't buy it, but I don't think I'm the only person who's sitting waiting for more info to see just how different it is and how interested I'll ultimately be. Because even if it is different, that doesn't mean it's going to be bad.
Or we're looking at Valkyria's Metroid Prime moment where we get a game that becomes the apex of the series?
I don't see how you could construe this situation in your head. It's got the same visuals and setting as every other 3d JRPG coming out, an intrinsically less involved battle system, it lost the artist that made the old games as beautiful as they were, and they're doing a hard reboot on the fan base. There is nothing unique about this game. People (JRPG fans) might enjoy it at launch, but it will sell abysmally and the bright minds at Sega will take Valkyria Chronicles off the shelf forever. The game's system was so unique and complex by VC3. There was not a single other series with a comparable setting. Now it's all gone.
It's got the same visuals and setting as every other 3d JRPG coming out,
Apart from the somewhat more magitech look, no, it still has very distinctive VC design cues.
an intrinsically less involved battle system,
And you're basing this off what?
it lost the artist that made the old games as beautiful as they were,
And which artist was that? There were a lot of artists involved in all three Chronicles titles.
and they're doing a hard reboot on the fan base. There is nothing unique about this game.
Based on about two paragraphs of early information. Yeah.
People (JRPG fans) might enjoy it at launch, but it will sell abysmally and the bright minds at Sega will take Valkyria Chronicles off the shelf forever.
Hypothetical and baseless until we see more.
The game's system was so unique and complex by VC3. There was not a single other series with a comparable setting. Now it's all gone.
Baseless as well. Wait until you've seen more before you decry it, good lord.

Now it's all gone.
If it bombs, it ain't going to bomb nearly as hard as the original trilogy, that's for damn sure!
not a single other series with a comparable setting.
Try harder. VC1 came out the same month as World at War. Also, the canon was in shambles after VC2 and 3 and was in dire need of burning down and rebuilding from scratch. [editline]18th November 2015[/editline] I always find it hilarious to see people think SRPGs actually sell. They don't. The VC trilogy was a Tsar Bomba up until the PC release of VC1 - And 500k simply isn't going to be enough to commission an HD SRPG, on PC or consoles. The best selling JRPGs of the past decade have been action-RPGs. Like it or not, Fire Emblem is the Highlander, and there can only be one!
Apart from the somewhat more magitech look, no, it still has very distinctive VC design cues.
It really does not. The characters are designed by the same people who do the atelier series, which is about as shovelware as JRPGs get.
And you're basing this off what?
Did you look at the screenshots? Read the article? It's a regular JRPG now. You move around a battle map in line formation with five characters and battle other enemies that are standing in line formation in turn based combat. There's a targeting gimmick. Certain abilities like sniping are now pre-encounter debuffs. Nothing remarkable at all.
And which artist was that? There were a lot of artists involved in all three Chronicles titles.
Raita? Who else?
Based on about two paragraphs of early information. Yeah.
You can learn quite a lot if you're willing to really pour over the information you're given. They don't tell you outright in the marketing-sensitive translated information, but it's easy to tell, for instance, that the battle screen shows enemies in fixed formations by looking at similarities between the screenshots.
Hypothetical and baseless until we see more.
If this doesn't sell well, the series that's hanging on by a thread to begin with will die. Not at all baseless. You don't get two second chances when money is involved.
Baseless as well. Wait until you've seen more before you decry it, good lord.
How is that baseless? Show me another SRPG with a similar setting. [editline]17th November 2015[/editline]
Try harder. VC1 came out the same month as World at War.
This is quite possibly the absolute worst argument I've heard in my entire life.
It really does not. The characters are designed by the same people who do the atelier series, which is about as shovelware as JRPGs get.
The eyes are pretty distinctively of the same style invoked in the earlier games. You'll have to try a little harder. Not to mention the director is the producer for the original trilogy.
Did you look at the screenshots? Read the article? It's a regular JRPG now. Certain abilities like sniping are now pre-encounter debuffs. Nothing remarkable at all.
Yes, I did look at the screenshots and read the article. There is nothing that says battles are turn-based, only that they are button-bound. In fact, LeGION is noted as "real-time", which would be pretty hard to pull off while also being turn-based unless it was real-time yet turn-based exactly like BLiTZ was. Which already makes it more unique than regular JRPGs. There's also nothing that specifically notes any kind of "line formations" apart from two screenshots.
Raita? Who else?
Raita was not the only artist involved in even the original game.
You can learn quite a lot if you're willing to really pour over the information you're given. Not really worth taking any note of unless, or until, it starts occuring in more screenshots of clearly different battles.
If this doesn't sell well, the series that's hanging on by a thread to begin with will die. Not at all baseless. You don't get two second chances when money is involved.
I must of forgotten when the re-release sold like fucking hotcakes. Valkyria is hardly hanging by a thread compared to it's sales prior.
How is that baseless? Show me another SRPG with a similar setting.
We know hardly anything about the exact systems and settings of this game. We don't know how much of the original game's systems will come into this one. Acting as if none of it will is stupid.
