Christ, 8 years ago I would have laughed at everyone who'd say that Nintendo should learn from what Sega is doing with Sonic. Times sure have changed.
Pretty much how I feel about it. Nintendo isn't wrong to exercise their legal arm in taking it down, but it sure is insulting after a literal decade of work. On the flipside, I like to believe that maybe it was timed to purposefully allow the game to be released while outwardly acting all protective of their IP. But of course Nintendo would never admit to such a thing even if it's true. They have to maintain their militant protectiveness to discourage people trampling all over their IPs. At least we have the game, though. I'd been following its development the whole time. So bizarre to think about all the things that have happened in my life in that time, all while waiting on this game to be done in the background. It was worth it; AM2R is incredible.
One thing i keep hearing around the internet is that nintendo "had to" do this to protect their IP therefore removing any responsibility from them. Thats trademarks, not IP, completely different things, they absolutely do not have to do this, ip doesnt just "expire" if you dont actively protect it. Thats all i wanted to say about this really.

It can easily be argued that the presence of a remake would cause the original to lose sales, even if that's not necessarily true. I think it's just as dumb as everyone else does and agree that Nintendo isn't winning themselves any goodwill from the Metroid community by doing this shit. But I can see that Nintendo does have ground to stand on here and is well within rights to do it.
it probably wouldve been perfectly fine and untouched by nintendo if they called it metroid: shitgoeshere and made unique levels most of the game seems like it was inspired by the other metroid games anyway

And that didn't get taken down, just AM2R specifically.
Cross-posting from the other thread. I think the whole "oh they have to dmca the games because then they'll lose copyright' is bullshit because there are so many fangames from so many different franchises and I've never heard of any trademark or copyright being taken. Same thing should apply to fan music or remixes and I've never heard a peep about that or fanart.
confrontation, if finished, wouldve probably been safe to release rip
It was finished and released. It was always meant to basically hype up AMR2. It's even on the site of the creator of AMR2, they only took that down and not Confrontation.

Would love it if Nintendo would make a proper Metroid game. Add an F-Zero game on top of that. Are these IPs dead in their actual form? I also don't fully understand why Nintendo doesn't just buy AM2R and release it on the virtual console or something. Similarly with the Mother 3 translation by Starman.net, it'd be wonderful if they released that as a market for it has been completely demonstrated.

Not to mention Nintendo is pretty firm on the whole "My way or the highway" mindset.
Metroid, F-Zero, and Paper Mario. Nintendo has some great IP's that they refuse to use or don't understand how to use. [editline]15th August 2016[/editline] They should try outsourcing more of their IP to competent developers (not team ninja). I'm hoping that federation force will be a success, then they might actually outsource more stuff.
You know I'm pretty certain if Team Ninja worked on Other M without Sakamoto shitting it up, it would have turned out a lot better. He's the one to blame for the god awful dialogue and story (he actually told the voice actress to deliver her lines like that), and he was also the one that told the artists to remove the gravity suit and make it a gravity... aura, instead. 6 years later and I'm still salty about that.
