DAILY MAIL: Smoking or being stressed during pregnancy can increase chances of baby being gay
Women who suffer stress during pregnancy increase the chance of their child being gay, according to a controversial new book.
The lifestyle of pregnant mothers affects the sexuality of their unborn child, altering their hormones and the formation of their brains, it claims.
Smoking or taking drugs can also result in a child who grows up to be gay, according to the book by Dutch neuroscientist Dick Swaab, which is yet another chapter in the debate about the origins and causes of homosexuality.
Professor Swaab believes that a child’s sexuality is determined in the womb and cannot be altered, while others argue that it is affected by upbringing or ‘selected’ as a lifestyle choice.
In his book, We Are Our Brains, he writes: ‘Although it’s frequently assumed that development after birth also importantly affects our sexual orientation, there’s no proof of this whatsoever.
Daily Mail Everyone.
EDIT
that title
No proof, no correlation, and it just doesn't make sense. Nice journalism.
The phrase I'm thinking of rhymes with "hello journalism" spoken in a camp voice.

This is probably one of the smartest things ever printed in the Daily Mail.

According to your NSA file, you were adopted.

While most of that sounds like a crock of bullshit, I think this is a pretty interesting argument. Is sexuality predetermined or a choice?

Predetermined, we've known this for a long time.

Nelson Mandela was a Communist and a Terrorist too.
heres a deep question
does that make him gay?
While most of that sounds like a crock of bullshit, I think this is a pretty interesting argument. Is sexuality predetermined or a choice?
i think its really not interesting at all as a discussion
sexuality isnt a specific thing. gay and straight wouldn't even exist if they weren't societal concepts in the first place, which is how it is in other parts of the world. the less a society stresses gender roles and sexual difference the more pansexual the people become.
and on the subject of "predetermined" sexuality is predetermined in the same way every single human behavior is predetermined. we get our cues on what we can desire in the first place from society, everything i can possibly desire was predetermined by birth.

cant blame them for that *canned laughter*
I'm just gonna point out that this man's name is Dick Swaab. If this dude isn't a troll, then somewhere God is reluctantly handing Zeus fifty bucks.
What.

i don't know who "we" is in this case, but if its the human scientific community then you're saying that with way too much authority.
the "gay gene" is at best a flimsy attempt to turn gene research into some kind of weird apologetics for sexual differences and at worst junk science that seems to imply "natural = good".
So I'm gay then. Really gay. Thanks mom.

ahahahaah, what an unironic name
perfectly fits this prick

i meant it as the alternative to 'being a choice', not as in 'you have a gay gene and you can't get rid of it', because i honestly have no clue how it happens but i know i didn't choose it
when people say that its a choice i always took it as saying that you have a choice in acting out your sexual desires with others which is true, you do have a choice in what sex acts you participate in.
but being celibate and negating your own sexuality isnt a choice anyone should have to make whether they identify as homosexual or not. thats part of the conservative ideal of "believe the lie for the sake of social order", which i don't believe

It shouldn't matter if it is or isn't a choice.
In my particular case it is a choice, but if I crave to gobble up cocks, nobody else should have any say in it (maybe aside of the person the gobbled cock belongs to).
according to the book by Dutch neuroscientist Dick Swaab..
Oh that's just cruel
Smoke gay everyday~
well I mean assuming your sexual orientation is at least somewhat determined genetically (which would make sense given that it isnt a choice), would it really be that much of a stretch to say that a mother doing things that effect the genes of her baby (smoking, drinking, etc) might effect the babies chances of being homosexual?
doesnt really seem that rediculous to me
implying drinking and smoking has genetic repercussions in the first place is kinda a big deal. if you can tell me the genetic process by which smoking modifies your genome into some kind of non-cancerous mutation and tell me the genetic process by which that genetic mutation influences a social identity then it might sound less ridiculous
keep in mind this article has nothing to do with genetics. its talking about smoking affecting hormones and secreting harmful substances to the carried child. it's a huge leap
