Oswald Laurence's voice was used on the northbound Northern Line but was phased out until only Embankment used it.
Dr Margaret McCollum said she often uses the station and was devastated when "he wasn't there" in November.
She was given a copy of the recording after TfL heard she went to Embankment after his death to hear his voice.
After the request Transport for London bosses decided to restore the voiceover warning to Embankment station.
Heartwarming and interesting article about the people behind these announcements, never really thought about who it is that records them before

What in fuck
I expected some relaxing, friendly voice going by the article but that was terrifying and imposing
This is the creepiest fucking thing ever. Surely I can't be the only one who thinks this?

That wasn't pleasant like i'd expected. Really cuts like a sharp knife. Mind The gap
I wonder how many lives he has saved who otherwise would have not minded the gap.

You better mind that fucking shit

Yeah made me jump a bit, I was also expecting a nicer voice like the Skylink train thingy at DFW.
The thing is this was this womans husband, to us the voice is harsh, sharp, imposing, unpleasant or whatever but she knew the man behind it and to her it sounds different. Its quite sad really.

This was recorded back in the days of 'Scare 'em Straight', not the modern friendly, calm approach. That platform is pretty old as well, IIRC from the last time I was there

I wouldn't say its sharp and imposing, I think it's great. It sounds so bloody British it's ludicrous, they probably have to put buckets under all of the speakers because of the tea that keeps leaking out of them.

It's better than some of the others, like South West trains which, until they fixed it, had a women with a slightly posh accent go:
"This is the South West Trains service to PORTSMOUTH HARBOUR. The next station is PORTSMOUTH HARBOUR. This train terminates at PORTSMOUTH HARBOUR."
I remember this voice. I don't remember when they phased it out though.
They should keep it like this. It really gets one's attention.
Aw, what a nice story. And I quite like the voice, too.
Vancouver was pretty devastated when the Canada Line didn't feature the SkyTrain lady.

I wonder if the reason it sounds so frightening is the distortion on the video's audio. Almost sounds like a Dalek screaming demands.

It does seem quite distorted. The voice also exists on a London Underground simulator and I don't recall it being quite so clippy.

oi m8 mind the gap ya cunt
Last time I went on the underground this is one of the things that I remember distinctly. It would just not be the same without it in my opinion. Same goes for the sounds the trains make, I find it very unique to the tube.
