The internet is now too big for its straining infrastrcture with engineers frantically patching old software collapsing under the weight of too much traffic. Network boffins around the globe started to notice problems earlier this week as some of the internet's ageing hardware began to collapse.
Maybe this wouldn't be happening if ISPs actually upgraded their fucking equipment once in a while instead of raising rates without providing any real services.
I've been getting 'slow' emails for the last few weeks along with 502 timeouts.
Many don't care to upgrade until it's too late. I mean look at IPv6 for example, it's the same story.
Governments should support upgrades in ISP hardware to match current needs.

Or make it illegal to provide horrid awful service, causing them to upgrade.
ISPs have the money, they just don't want to.
This explains a few things that happened to me this week.
In other news, that is a slightly annoying source hiding part of the article behind a survey/share..thing.

IIRC There are countries which do that.
Germany, I think. And I think the EU is planning to make that a standard.
Earlier this week I couldn't access Outlook, Netflix, and one or two other sites, I thought it was just some coincidental down time, though it was down for days so I was pretty confused.
Comcast is the worst fucking company ever. I hate them with a passion.
This is really nothing but a hiccup in the long run. It's a kick in the ass of companies and network engineers everywhere to finally replace older equipment, probably upgrade to IPv6 while they're at it.

Trying to get ISPs to turn on IPv6 is a horror story in itself, I Googled my own ISP (Talktalk) about their IPv6 plans if any and basically the answer was "We've got enough v4 addresses for now, everything is fine, go away". The amount of sighing I did to that response was off the charts. I get the feeling they would wait for Carrier Grade NAT to collapse before they did anything.
So make ISPs adhere to 99.9 availability or face fines?
I'd love it
Looks like the Sky is falling (hehe)

My ISP just silently turned IPv6 on at some point.
Dunno if it is just google chrome or what this guy is saying, but it took a while for stuff to load up for me, not just facepunch, but youtube, facebook and gmail.
The 512k problem doesn't seem all that big of a deal, article says it's easy to patch so just do that and reboot. It sounds way worse than it actually is.
I have never heard of this problem.
Overall, Internet experts do not believe the issue will dramatically impact Internet operations. Only older routers and switches are affected, and most can be reconfigured to assign more memory to routing IPv4 traffic, but at the expense of supporting the next generation of networking, IPv6.
So basically it's the continued use of extremely dated hardware to manage the internet backbone and incompetence to force the hardware to use IPv6 at the possible expense of reliability when the best solution is to completely replace the hardware.
Well, that's not good.
no wonder my grandmas internet was horrible as fuck a week ago
4-7KB/s on steam
also here at home i get slow download speeds :|

ISPs got around 120 BILLION dollars in the last 2 years in tax breaks just for that purpose. Instead of better more reliable and cheaper internet it's worse, and more expensive. I wonder where all the money went Hmmmmm

For some reason I don't think 512k was at fault there.
I've been getting high pings on everything for the past few days, this is probably why.
I've noticed a similar thing here as well.
Not exactly my speeds are hammered, but I get 502s more often than before now, and Facepunch tends to be slow at times.
Governments should support upgrades in ISP hardware to match current needs.
Why the fuck should the government give more money to already insanely profitable businesses so they can upgrade their infrastructure? They have the money to do that on their own. ISPs should just stop being lazy money hungry cunts and actually make significant investments in their business.

Doubt it is the 512k problem. Generally, when a router hits its routing table limit, it just stops installing new routes; it (Normally) doesn't stop routing traffic or take longer to send traffic.

I think that might just be Facepunch being slow.
Fortunately this hasn't been hurting me personally that much, but I've noticed a few sites getting 502 errors every so often.

Plus they said "ageing" and "scrabble"...

They also get subsidies as well, I think. So on top of getting huge tax breaks, the government is literally shitting money at them so they can improve their networks, which they either aren't, or are doing painfully slowly/whenever Google Fiber comes to town.
Thankfully, a local Co-Op has begun providing 1Gbps fiber internet in my area, which will hopefully put a fire under the ass of the Comcast, Suddenlink, Cox, and CenturyLink providers in the region as well.
Everyone stop shitposting now we're reaching critical mass
