Platoon (1986)
Platoon is a 1986 epic war film written and directed by Oliver Stone and starring Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe and Charlie Sheen, with an early appearance of Forest Whitaker and a small supporting turn from Johnny Depp. It is the first of Stone's Vietnam War trilogy, followed by 1989's Born on the Fourth of July and 1993's Heaven & Earth. The story is drawn from Stone's experiences as a U.S. infantryman in Vietnam and was written by him upon his return as a counter to the vision of the war portrayed in John Wayne's The Green Berets.[1] The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1986. In 2007, the American Film Institute placed Platoon at #83 in their "100 Years...100 Movies" poll. British television channel Channel 4 voted Platoon as the 6th greatest war film ever made, behind Full Metal Jacket and ahead of A Bridge Too Far.
Platoon is my favourite war-movie and probably my favourite movie overall, it's brutal and hellish. Olver Stones best movie IMO and Charlie Sheen's best acting. Not much else to say.
Best ending ever.
Awesome movie, but i still think Full Metal Jacket was the best war movie in existence. In my opinion anyways.
Yes, Full Metal Jacket was a great warmovie too, I still prefer Platoon though.
I prefer Platoon to Full Metal Jacket. Platoon is indescribably good. I love the film. Charlie Sheen is surprisingly good in this film. My favorite part [sp]When Chris finally gets revenge for Sgt. Elias by shooting that two-faced prick Barnes...[/sp]
Platoon is one of my favourite movies. Elias is my favourite character, Barnes is a dickhead
I loved Platoon. Great film
I like full metal jacket more. You just seem more involved in the characters
Fucking great film. I also like Full Metal Jacket, I'm not sure which I prefer.
Quiet possibly my favorite war film.
I love the music in Platoon, and the hole intro scene at the airport is very nice.
Got it around here somewhere, perhaps i should watch it :v:
You truly should, you'll be amazed! :)
A great film.
My third Vietnam Movie after FMJ adn Apoclaypse Now
I didn't really like it, I have never finished it.

In my opinion it goes Apocalypse Now/Deer Hunter/ Full Metal Jacket/ and Platoon when it comes to vietnam war movies. Yeah i know there are some more like we were soldiers etc, but that is my list
Wasn't too impressed with it... decent story and everything, but not that good from a technical perspective IMO.
Apocalypse now is a bit better imho.
Wasn't too impressed with it... decent story and everything, but not that good from a technical perspective IMO.
How do you mean? :)
Apocalypse now is a bit better imho.
I wouldn't even compare them to be honest. Platoon is almost a hyper realistic (if dramatized) portrayal of being an infantryman in Vietnam, whereas Apocalypse Now is this sort of dreamy surreal drug induced horror trip. I love the feel of Apoc Now, but I also love the realism of Platoon. They put every actor through a compacted infantry training camp (Interesting tidbit: The same guy who ran the infantry training camp for Platoon is the same guy who ran the training camp for the Saving Private Ryan, BoB, The pacific etc) before filming, it shows, not only in the technical accuracies, but also in their faces - there's no acting there, they are genuinely tired, pissed off and stressed.
I didn't like the second part of FMJ, but platoon was brilliant throughout the whole movie.
I haven't watched the film, am I a bad person? :ohdear: I'll try and find it somewhere though, I love war films.
I haven't watched the film, am I a bad person? :ohdear: I'll try and find it somewhere though, I love war films.
Do you love war films because you love war fetishism? If so, then maybe these are not the films for you. Most Vietnam war films, except the likes of We Were Soldiers (gibson sux) have a strong anti-war sentiment.
My favorite Vietnam movie. Yes, it really is. The only good parts of Full Metal Jacket was the training.
I think Platoon is a good portrayal but Hamburger Hill is just as gritty.
uhm... charlie sheen's monologue over the film is probably some of his worst acting ever and completely ruins the mood of the entire movie
I absolutely love this movie, also young Dr. Cox

Apocalypse Now and Platoon is about in the same arena of being realistic. We Were Soldiers is about as realistic as any movie I have saw. That being said I was never in the vietnam conflict so what do i know.
