Microsoft Will Not Support Upcoming Processors Except On Windows 10
Microsoft has long been the bastion of long term support for older platforms, so today’s support news out of Redmond is particularly surprising. Intel launched it’s 6th generation Skylake cores back in August, and support on Windows 7 has been not as strong as Windows 10 right out of the gate. It’s not terribly strange that new features like Intel’s Speed Shift will not be coming to Windows 7, but today Microsoft announced that going forward, new processors will only be supported on Windows 10. Skylake will only be supported through devices on a supported list, and even those will only have support until July 2017.
They really aren't fucking around are they
I'm getting some serious OS X vibes here....
why are they pushing windows 10 this much?

xp holdouts gave them night terrors

Legacy support is expensive.
Maybe if it didn't cause the Ethernet to stop working on one of my old PCs, I wouldn't have a problem with 10. Oh, and if all my games ran fine.
Now the question is do I upgrade at time or just go to a different OS?
Jokes on them: I can't afford hardware new enough that this'll bother me :v:
At this point we shoud change the OS and go to the competition
but.. theres none

They're giving it out for free to basically have a large enough install base to entice developers to make UWAs that'll run across both PCs, Mobile and Xbox. Also in the long term they'd probably like only supporting one OS instead of like ~3 at a time.
I think when win10 finally stops crashing and most errors are mitigated, then I'll consider upgrading to it.
This seems like it was deliberately done after they found out PC sales have plateaued since summer of last year.
you mean theyre beginning to drop support for an operating system nearing seven years old? those literal fucking nazis
Satya Nutella is complete nuts.

Yeah man, they're dropping support for most likely the most used version of Windows that is also the best to run every types of games without compatibility issues, those literal fucking nazis!!!!

Windows 8 was released in October 2012 and Microsoft claims it has mainstream support until 2018, yet Skylake will only be supported until July 2017, so yes this is yet another bullshit way for them to try and force Windows 10 down everyone's throat.
I guess they're trying to force people to upgrade to avoid Windows XP again.

How so? Unless you're thinking about the PowerPC - intel transition a hundred of years back

What kind of crashes and errors are you talking about
xp holdouts gave them night terrors
XP holdouts are basically like Japanese holdouts at this point.
For Windows 7 and 8/8.1 users though, this is fucking stupid. 8 has been out for just a little over 3 years now, 7 came out 6 (almost 7) years ago but has great compatibility for games and shit. There's no need to upgrade, and I'm not going to. Unless they can get the issues that there are with 10 ironed out, which others have highlighted here, then Microsoft can fuck off. I'll be a holdout again. I'm fine with it.

OS X has a whitelist that prevents it being installed on less-than-modern machines. For example you could run 10.9 on the original Mac Pro but the installer simply says it isn't supported.
At this rate I just want to give up computers as a hobby entirely, buy a tablet for important shit like tax and banking, and start building model planes or some other boring shit. I don't want to switch to their botnet crap, but I guess that means I don't want to play new games anymore either.

what compatibility issues?
I would switch to Linux so I can have shit exactly as I want it but... video games. And Windows programs.
what compatibility issues?
the kind of issues where you can't run older games without it fucking up in some ways

Play with old computers. You will be amazed what vendors back then let you do with the hardware/software and how sane interfaces could be built on limited and expensive resources.
Just upgrade to Win 10 ffs, I did and never looked back. I've never experienced any problems at all.
yeah be like MIPS
going to eat my toe nails and boogers too
