The mystery surrounding the Norwegian Hercules plane which crashed into Kebnekaise may be nearing a solution, as the Swedish Army’s ranger battalion has found one of the plane’s two black boxes. “I saw something orange peeking up from the snow,” said army captain Carl-Johan Olofsson to the Aftonbladet newspaper. The Hercules military plane crashed straight into Sweden’s highest peak Kebnekaise during an exercise this spring, and all five of the Norwegian officers on board were killed. Why the plane crashed has so far been a mystery. Now the black box which contains a recording of everything said inside the cock pit has been found, the result of a week’s intensive searching by the army’s ranger battalion, the police and the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (Statens Haverikommission). “When I dug it up I immediately saw that we’d found the right thing, as ‘voice recorder’ is written on the unit,” said Olofsson. The find may finally be able to solve the puzzle. “It’s fantastic that they’ve found it. If the information is legible, which it probably is, we’ll be able to obtain fundamental information. We may even receive the explanation for the crash,” said flight safety expert Hans Kjäll to Aftonbladet. The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority has previously said that the black boxes, once found, are to be sent to Britain for analysis.
http://www.thelocal.se/42436/20120805/
I always assumed that a black box would be, well a black box
They look like this.
They look like this.
it might just be me but I think the name is slightly misleading
it might just be me but I think the name is slightly misleading
Black boxes were black until 1965. That's why they're called black boxes instead of orange boxes :v:
Cos black blackboxes are the best idea right? :v:
Finally..
I always assumed that a black box would be, well a black box
Finding a small black box in a massive debris field would be like finding a needle in a haystack.
Finding a small black box in a massive debris field would be like finding a needle in a haystack.
Don't have a go, Mr Grumpy, it's a pretty easy conclusion to jump to
I thought they were called blackboxes due to be associated with mass death. EDIT: Dumb because I'm bad at wordology
I thought they were called blackboxes due to be associated with mass death.

...they were essentially photograph-based flight recorders since the record was made on a scrolling photographic film. The latent image was made by a thin ray of light deviated by a mirror tilted according to the magnitude of the data to record (altitude, speed, etc.).[2][3] Since the inside of the recorder was pitch black, this may be the origin of the "black box" name, often used as a synonym for a flight recorder.
But no matter how the name came about, It's good that they finally found something. I thought they had closed the case a while back when everyone stopped talking about it after some detail had been found. It's going to be interesting to hear what actually happened in the cockpit
They look like this.
It's kind of eerie to think that every time you get on a plane there's one of those on it and the only time someone's going to look at it is if you crashed. Maybe its just me though, I'm shitscared of plane crashes. On a lighter note, it'd be funny if they opened it up and there were five games inside.
They look like this.
Should have named it the Red Box instead. Then it wouldn't be so miss-leading.
Now the black box which contains a recording of everything said inside the cock pit has been found
That's an unfortunate typo.
I'm guessing they started to produce them in orange so that after a crash, they'd be easier to find.
Here's a "Black Box" according to flight people.
They look like this.
What's with the stripes?
What's with the stripes?
So they can be detected easily underwater
They were also invented by a man named Black. EDIT: Hmm, apparently not. That's just what I've heard. Wikipedia says otherwise.

Couldn't they just attach a small radio transmitter inside it? I bet if they can make an animal collar that transmits radio signals they could put one inside that one. I guess the transmission would be blocked by the metal or something because there's no way they didn't think of this.

Also, all the black box memory is solid-state. Any transimitter requires a power source, and there's no room for one in the box.

You do get radio beacons that are used for location, but it's be pretty difficult to pinpoint the exact position of an object as small as an FDR using that -- it's more for locating the crash as a whole. Research by the BEA showed that they have had an 90% survival rate spanning 27 air accidents over the sea.
They've just found the recordings of the last moments of a plane and what does FP do? Argue about what colour a box is :v:

I took what may be the last image of that plane, just some days prior to its crash when I was randomly going by Evenes airport (which it was landed on): It's not exactly the best image though, as there was a building in the way.
