Basketball player 'fine' after eye pops out in New Zealand
WELLINGTON: A New Zealand Breakers basketballer whose eyeball popped out of its socket mid-game is staging a "miracle" recovery and should play again soon, the club said Friday (Jan 27).
US import Akil Mitchell was on the attack against the Cairns Taipans in Auckland on Thursday night when he caught an accidental finger in the eye from an opposing player.
Television footage showed the 24-year-old writhing in agony on the ground holding his hands to his left eye as horrified teammates tried to help.
Mitchell was rushed to hospital and the Australian National Basketball League (NBL) later said his eyeball had been relocated in its socket and he had been sent home.
"I could still see out of the eye even though it was kinda on the side of my face... it was a weird sensation," Mitchell said.
"With the palm of my hand I felt my eyeball on the side of my face, which was when I knew this was worse than I (first) thought it was," he told Radio Sport.
Mitchell heard a collective gasp from the crowd and said he "freaked out" believing he would lose sight in the eye and his career was over.
He told the radio station that while the injury was painful, the worst part was not being able to blink, making his fully functioning eyeball red and irritated.
"Once I got in the ambulance they gave me a little pain medicine and some saline drops in my eye and I felt it slide back into place, which is also a really strange feeling.
"It felt so good to be able to blink again, which is insane."
Breakers general manager Dillon Boucher said it appeared Mitchell had full vision in the affected eye although there could be some minor muscular damage to the socket.
He said the North Carolina native could return for the Breakers as early as this season, although he would probably need to wear eye protection.
That's so freaky.
Also, by how everything transpired to this, oh my gosh.
Isn't this not as uncommon as one might think and other than being uncomfortable not too bad though?

What kind of life do you lead where having your eye pop out of your skull is a 'weird sensation'?
Ughhhhh this story made me feel so uncomfortable

from his perspective it must be pretty surreal, to still be seeing out of your eye even though it's hanging out of the socket
The story made you uncomfortable? There's a freakin' video! Its NSFW AS FUCK though.

i mean it would be pretty weird
Reminds me a few years ago when some dude in the club got his eye kicked out. He was perfectly fine, even at the hospital. Shock really takes over your body. But watching that shit is not like on the screen, it disturbs you for a long time.

It's not that bad. You see the white of his eye for a split second.
The Vader eye pop out is far worse.

Of course it would be weird, you would be looking in two completely different directions and your brain wouldn't know what to make of it
I'm curious how well the recovery actually is, like, can people who have this happen to them get full control of pointing that eye afterwards?

Outlook depends on how it got popped out and depends on the damage to the eye socket/extraocular muscles. If your eye was enucleated (due to severing of the optic nerve partially or totally), or your optic nerve damaged, you're probably fucked as far as long term visual problems are concerned. Prognosis also depends heavily on speed at which the eye is replaced in the socket.
The headline confused me so...
:thisthread:
Does the eye stay hard and spherical or does it turn into a saggy mush once it's out of the socket?
