Well, my family's 2001 Ford Winstar finally decided to shit itself in half (won't start up, check engine light will still not turn off after around 1000$ worth of work, that sort of thing) so we've decided to get a new one. So far looks around the neighborhood have been unsuccessful, can you guys help a guy out and find some nice SUVs under 10k? We're planning on skiing soon and can't do it if we have no vehicle to transport all that equipment.
**Oh shit dawg things just got changed the hell up**
Well, we found some new options. We've decided instead to lease a car instead, so our price range just shot up to anything around $20,000, new or used. We're looking at a 2012 Eclipse at the moment, but it's a 5 seater, and a 6 to 7 seater would be nominal for our situation.
blazer.
Any year.
Get a 80's k5 blazer

I love the Ford Escape.. one of the best SUVs I've driven in the winter. If I were to buy an SUV soon it'd be that.

Hey man it was worth a shot, plus the Escape is looking really good. My mom has decided the Blazer is too ugly, even though it's a great utility vehicle.

She thinks that ^

Is uglier than that? ^
Your mom has serious issues.
Compact SUV? Cherokees are cheap as fuck
Cherokees are nice IMO. often times cheap too, solid cars.
I got two Cherokees you can buy :v:
I'd say... Pontiac Torrent GXP. But then again that's what I personally would get if I was to get a SUV.
And the Escape above the Cherokee? What the hell.

There is a reason those sold so little.
Which one?
Sorry, didn't notice the new reply.
The Torrents.
From what I've heard, Torrents are horrid. One of my relatives owns one, and apparently they handle horribly, they nearly had a near fatal crash in trace amounts of snow.
Escape got bought away, now she's looking at a Volvo XC90. Doesn't look too bad, honestly. Cherokee has bad fuel economy to her, we're not going skiing all the time, only occasionally.
oh my god your mom is picky. 'It has to be cheap... but must have this this this and a golden sink'
Landcrusier?
BMW X3 / X5?
I'm not an expert at SUV :v:

She's a nice woman, I swear. Just a bit fickle at times, like how one of her deciding factors for buying a new car is whether or not it has an iPod dock or auxiliary jack.
Montero Sport?
why did i get a funny :(
All of these have been really good suggestions and we put them all into consideration. We've decided to lease a car instead, so we can 10k higher, the price range is now anything around $20,000. Just saying.

Waste. Of. Money.
Yer.
And you can add an ipod/ aux jack to any car... even if you want to keep the stock radio. Tons of options.. usually pretty cheap too at $200 or less installed in most cases.
Dont EVER lease a car. It's like renting an apartment, except you can't use it that much and if you go over the maximum miles, you get a death squad sent to you.

He said K5 blazer, which is one of these;

OP, you should really try to get a slightly older SUV than a newer one.
You should be able to find a decent used one for around $5000.
The newer SUV's aren't even really SUV's anymore. They're more like large cars. I'm pretty sure most of them don't even have solid axles anymore.
I'm not a big fan of SUV's, but here is a list of a few that I would consider if I had to get an SUV;
K5 blazer (like the one above)
mid-late 70's Suburban

Ford Excursion (only if it's a 7.3l PowerStroke Diesel)

Ford Bronco (full-size and the Bronco 2)

Jeep Cherokee

Subaru Forester (only after they switched from DOHC to SOHC)

That's about all I can think of for SUV's that I would buy.
I realize that not all are compact. I also just picked pictures of my favorite years of them.
EDIT:
Just noticed you changed the OP to a car. I can't think of any 6+ seater cars, except older cars that had bench seats in the front and back.
Since you're skiing, I would recommend an AWD car with with a roof rack.
I would recommend a Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. They are like a regular Impreza wagon, but with slightly larger tires.
They have been around for quite a few years and have 5 different body styles now. They come in turbo and non-turbo versions.
My personal favorite is the late 90's style, which I just happen to own; (I removed my roof rack, since I don't use it)

There's also the 2002 style;

The 2004 style;

The 2007 style;

and the 2011 style;
I got two Cherokees you can buy :v:
correction
I have a Cherokee you can buy :v:
Anything except a Xterra, my mother own one and it drink about 20 liter every 100km
don't lease, you'll pay more in the long run than you would if you just bought a 20k suv outright and get less utility out of it.
imho an old cherokee or an explorer with an aftermarket stereo so she can have an aux input is the best option, stereos are piss easy to install too
I replaced the whole audio system in my Camry in an afternoon.
[editline]9th January 2012[/editline]
a Landcruiser would be aces too
This is for Dip,

If the car has a radio with an antenna... this will add an Ipod/aux input for you. Enjoy.
But like strider said... if it's not a relatively new vehicle it's worth it to just slam a new one in instead of factory integration.
Shit, an early/mid '00s Escape can get an aftermarket radio installed in literally like.... 5-10 minutes. Piss easy is indeed a good word to describe it.
Eclipse? Wat, why would you buy a new Eclipse, they're bad
If you don't care about styling and just want a good car, the Hyundai Elantra is very good value.
