Damn, ancient stuff is awesome.
The pyramids are some scary shit.
It's hard to imagine people building these things by hand.
Surrender your mysteries!
Neat another reason to go to Egypt, I gotta see even more pyramids now.
I love that last picture, great to see the artwork lasted for thousands of years.

I'm still waiting for them to be back in town
Seven tombs? Men, we have found the real life Barrows.
I'm very curious as to why.
The leading idea is that they were build into ritual and worship. Which sort of makes sense. But to me however, Tombs seem more likely. Because you would want to honor one's dynasty, especially the great one's. But each of these weren't hollow and there have been no burials, outside of post-era one's, found in or nearby.
From playing games as a kid like Pharaoh, one might consider them to be city garnishes. Monuments and grand architecture to adorn the city...
But with all the work and effort being put into the Giza Pyramids... you think these were just made from the "spare" blocks? Or if there's a different purpose to them.
All those late-night Alien conspiracies come creeping to mind. :v:
Man I wish I had loads of money and a reputation to boot in the Archaeological world... Going down to Egypt would be sweet, but most of these Pyramids are blocked off unless you've got permission from the School of Egyptology or whatever they call themselves in Cairo.

They weren't exactly built by hand, not entirely
How did they miss this all these years...

Wayfinding maybe? Those deserts can be pretty big and flat, I imagine it'd be nice to have a big, stable pyramid that says a town is nearby.

Egypt is rather large

Then why not just make a massive tower? Surely that would be MUCH easier?

They might fall over I guess, I'm not really sure, I was just throwing it out there.
Then why not just make a massive tower? Surely that would be MUCH easier?
Towers collapse. Pyramids don't. They wanted their legacy to survive for as long as possible - so they built structures that no weapons at the time could destroy out of the hardiest, most weather resistant material available.
So who's buried in it?

And, oddly enough, even the weapons of modern man. I doubt even a Tsar Bomba right smack in the middle of Giza would knock those fuckers over. The pyramids would just sit there radioactively not giving a fuck.

How big is that one exactly? In this pic it looks absolutely massive without any real point of reference.

Except deserts are often anything but flat. Mountains of sand abound.

You can't build a tower on sand. Towers sink. Pyramids were designed to have as large a surface area as possible on the bottom so they could "float" on top of the sand. To an extent, of course.

Gotta land somewhere

slavery gets shit done
slavery gets shit done
No. Majority of the pyramids were build by paid craftsmen and volunteers. I am pretty sure if you have nothing to do , you would want to build a pyramids. You need to remember back then, people have no entertainment and proper jobs so building a pyramids seems to look like a good job for them.

True, but it gets real repetitive. Waypoint idea kinda holds, still.
