Lamar Smith, the chief sponsor of SOPA, said on Friday that he is pulling the bill “until there is wider agreement on a solution.”“I have heard from the critics and I take seriously their concerns regarding proposed legislation to address the problem of online piracy,” Smith (R-Texas) said. “It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products.”
Smith also released the following statement on Friday:
“We need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products. “The problem of online piracy is too big to ignore. American intellectual property industries provide 19 million high-paying jobs and account for more than 60% of U.S. exports. The theft of America’s intellectual property costs the U.S. economy more than $100 billion annually and results in the loss of thousands of American jobs. Congress cannot stand by and do nothing while American innovators and job creators are under attack.”
“The online theft of American intellectual property is no different than the theft of products from a store. It is illegal and the law should be enforced both in the store and online.
“The Committee will continue work with copyright owners, Internet companies, financial institutions to develop proposals that combat online piracy and protect America’s intellectual property. We welcome input from all organizations and individuals who have an honest difference of opinion about how best to address this widespread problem. The Committee remains committed to finding a solution to the problem of online piracy that protects American intellectual property and innovation.”
The move comes after widespread protest on the Internet on Wednesday by Wikipedia, Reddit and others. The sites signaled their displeasure with the bill by going dark. That day, several Congressmen dropped their support for SOPA and its Senate counterpart, PIPA. The latter bill has also been taken off the table for now.
Did we win?
He pulled it, doesn't mean it's dead.

No,i bet it'll come back as a zombie.
There's still PIPA as well...
Only about the 4th time it's been posted.
Lamar Smith, the chief sponsor of SOPA, said on Friday that he is pulling the bill “until there is wider agreement on a solution.”
Not dead; let's just say it's in "Congressional cryostatis".
And fucking PIPA's still out there.
Not dead.
What do you want to happen? Do you want him to say "I give up and I guarantee that no bill like this will ever be proposed again"
What do you want to happen? Do you want him to say "I give up and I guarantee that no bill like this will ever be proposed again"
Everyone wants him to say that
What do you want to happen? Do you want him to say "I give up and I guarantee that no bill like this will ever be proposed again"
Actually, that'd be pretty much perfect
I believe a massive curb stomping is in order. :D
What do you want to happen? Do you want him to say "I give up and I guarantee that no bill like this will ever be proposed again"
Do I want him to say that? Yes.
Do I want him to do it? Yes.
Is he going to say or do it? No.
If SOPA and PIPA both die (as in are completely scrapped- not shelved "until a later time" or any of that horse shit), then it significantly hurts the chances of any such legislation even being suggested again any point in the future. Especially when you consider that civilization is just becoming more and more dependent on and connected with the Internet, and, subsequently, more and more people will not stand for this sort of crap precisely because of how dependent they will be on it.

As I understand it PIPA is just SOPA in Senate form.
Guys, guys! I'm reading that both SOPA and PIPA have been killed. They are not shelved. They're not going to try to push them through in lesser form. They are actually DEAD. They will not return to the congress floor.

Something along the line of that, yes.
Missing a pinky swear and a formal apology for making such a retarded bill in the first place though.

They'll try to silently pass it again in February. Just you watch.

Dutch tech site. Clearly states that both SOPA and PIPA are completely off the table.
As I understand it PIPA is just SOPA in Senate form.
Indeed it is. Most of the same companies and private organizations that supported SOPA support PIPA as well. The MPAA, RIAA, Viacom, NCTA, and NBC.
Still,Megaeverything is DEAD. and that sucks.
Let's see them take the bill out on live TV/internet stream and set it on fire. Burn it to a crisp. We don't want it edited, we want it permanently and irreversibly gone.
What do you want to happen? Do you want him to say "I give up and I guarantee that no bill like this will ever be proposed again"
That's precisely what we want to hear. We want PIPA and SOPA burned, we want the senators and representatives responsible to openly admit they were being stupid and swear they won't introduce shit like that again, and we want congress to never consider such a bill again.

Getting 10 emails from one group is okay for this occasion.
Don't forget USA still did an "Illegal enter a country Extradite (With out permission)" not of their own act of terrorism, For all we know they could've planted a bomb in new Zealand as well.
Getting 10 emails from one group is okay for this occasion.
I get like 3 a day from them :v:
So what now? These can come back at any time right?
So what now? These can come back at any time right?
Its possible, but it might arrive under a diffrent name.
Still this is a MASSIVE sucess for the entire internet.
Didn't like 13 senators withdraw support from PIPA too?
Even Michelle Bachmann stopped supporting SOPA.
If someone so insurmountably stupid is able to realize how bad an idea this is, then everyone else should as well.
Well, except for the ones in Hollywood's pocket. They'll never leave.

Honestly, from what I heard, the closing of MegaX wasnt related to SOPA/PIPA as much as people thought, the owner was subject of multiple arrests, including Embezzlement and Insider Trading, along with others.
