Bulgaria has incited fury after banning foreigners from buying land - in the same week that its citizens gained the right to work anywhere in the EU.
The country, which has seen restrictions lifted on 7.3million Bulgarians to live and work in Europe, has reinforced a ban stopping non-Bulgarian nationals from purchasing agricultural plots.
But the move has prompted accusations of 'appalling hypocrisy' and breaches the agreement which let Bulgaria join the EU in the first place.
Yeah, this will get overturned by the EUGH fairly quickly imho. Goes against a lot of the EU agreements.
Getting Started - is it possible for you to buy in Bulgaria?
Foreign persons cannot acquire the ownership of land in Bulgaria - buildings yes, land no... If you're buying an apartment or an off-plan development it seldom comes with land so this will not affect you. If, however, you're buying a villa or house you will need to register a Bulgarian Limited Company, with yourself as the sole owner and director. The company will then own the property, plus the land on which it sits. And of course you own the company, and so you own the land and the buildings too! This is all perfectly legal. A change to this restriction on land ownership has been approved in principle by the Bulgarian Government and was a precondition of joining the EU. However, it will not come into force until 2014.
I found a interesting loophole around this. All you need to do is setup a company in bulgaria and make the company own the property.
wait i thought that nearly all countries had this?
Let´s kick them out of the EU if they don´t change it. You just can´t enjoy all the pros without taking responsibility...
Oh, so it's just the land, not apartments and stuff?
What the fuck are they doing?
I think they're just making everything worse like they want us out of the EU.
Our Agriculture Minister wants to do this:
If a foreigner and a romanian want to buy the same land, the romanian will get the deal. If only a foreigner wants to buy it, he can.
That's okay with EU laws, as good as you can get without pissing off anybody. Bad move for Bulgaria there.
Yo, Bulgarian here.
a) This happened more than a month ago so that's some nice journalism - picking the topic when they can use it as anti-Balkan propaganda. Again.
b) Why do you think Bulgarians have been protesting against our current government for the past 7 months, every single night? Well, let me tell you - it's not because of our overwhelming love for the people in power.
These evil Bulgarians, we must remove the kebab from their bodies and liberate them.

No, the EU will do what it always does when countries pull shit like this; fine them like fuck until it no longer becomes profitable to be protectionist assholes.
i.e. this is another move by our inept government - a populist move, meant to appeal to the masses. Which is hilarious, considering the current government is supposed to be a socialist one.
It's just another kindle in the fire that's burning in our country. When news of this came out in local agencies a month ago, it was presented as if it was somehow better this way - as if foreigners were flocking here to buy all the land and that the government was the last protector of our rights. Nobody bought it of course, and the move was quickly criticized by both the (equally inept, corrupt, populist and hated) opposition and the protesters, but alas...
As I, and many other Bulgarians expected, this move is now biting us in the asses. I wish that The Daily Mail hadn't picked it up right now, when it'll just weigh the UK public's scales even more against us, when it's the last thing in the world that needs to happen right now.

If anyone's actually interested in this, here's a fun quip - it costs less than 12 quid to open a company in Bulgaria. And yes, it's a one time payment...

Also, I just had the good sense to actually check the news again. The restriction fell 4 days ago. Let's see where this goes though, it's not like The Daily Mail will remove it even if they're told.

Let's kick the UK from the EU for their openly xenophobic campaign, eh? That'll help everything, right? I mean, they can't just enjoy the trading benefits without taking the responsibility as all other countries in the EU, right?

Quality impartial down to earth journalism.

I understand that they're heavily biased, but flat out lying to your readers is appalling.
and we're planning to do the same
An ironic twist is if the UK did this.
Honestly?
I wish we'd do the same here in the United States. It's an odd feeling, knowing that foreign companies own American property, and in my opinion, more than a little discerning.
more than a little discerning.
I don't think that word means what you think it means
On topic, I thought other countries already did this, like France.

I think that there should be treaties that allow some like Japanese companies to build and own car factories here, for example, but I don't think for example, Prince Saud should be allowed to own real-estate here.
Oh, so it's just the land, not apartments and stuff?
You do know, that to in most countries land and apartments+houses are directly tied to each other. If you buy an apartment, you also buy a percentage of the land the house itself sits on.
Of course it depends if superficies solo cedit is the standard system in your country or not.
I don't think my country has ever hit international news with anything good.
Ever.
wow this is one of the worst articles i've read in my entire life. i had to double-check it just to make sure i wasn't crazy, but they managed to write 540 words about the UK in an article titled Bulgaria accused of 'appalling hypocrisy' as it BANS foreigners from buying land just days after its citizens get the right to work anywhere in Europe
(there are only 207 words about bulgaria in it)

Welcome to the world of quality hard hitting journalism that is The Daily Mail.
You know Sword and Paint, if the only source you can find for your stories on immigration and other countries is Daily Mail, perhaps you shouldn't post them. For some reason you only seem to use the BBC for the really hard-hitting stuff, like recycling christmas trees and Las Vegas taxi drivers.

You did that joke so badly that it doesn't even make sense. Congrats

They spin way too many stories around to count as credible.

The Daily Mail is an opinion piece at best and slanderous at worst.
