CAIR is attempting to reclaim the meaning of the controversial term in its My Jihad campaign that uses billboards on city buses to redefine what it perceives as American misconceptions of an Islamic practice. “A common misconception of the word ‘jihad’ is that it means armed struggle or holy war,” CAIR Bay Area Chapter head Zhara Billoo told ABC 7. “The proper meaning of jihad, as many of us frequently describe it, is ‘to struggle’ and that’s it.” Biloo said that the word has been “hijacked” by people “pushing anti-Muslim sentiment.” So, CAIR is using bus advertising to show Muslims achieving personal goals, such as getting in shape, as a form of jihad. One ad pictures individuals with varying pigmentation acting friendly and says, “My Jihad is to build friendships across the aisle.” The Jihad ad campaign follows a series of controversial advertisement on buses in San Francisco and nationwide sponsored by conservative blogger Pamela Gellar’s American Freedom Defense Initiative. Those ads read, “In any war between civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man… Support Israel Defeat Jihad.” Gellar responded to the pro jihad campaign by submitting counter ads to the San Francisco transit agency, as well as to the Chicago Transit Authority, which first ran the CAIR campaign. Gellar’s proposed series, “That’s #My Jihad. What’s yours?” uses pictures of Islamic advocates of violence, including Osama Bin Laden and Major Nidal Hassan. Shaped in a similar fashion to the CAIR ads, Gellar’s proposed ads integrate quotes about committing acts of violence in the name of Islam, Allah and Jihad. One says, “Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah” and is placed next to a man in a headdress that covers most of his face. Gellar posted photos of the proposed ads on her blog.
I often jihad with my dick
I often jihad with my dick
I jihad to comprehend this. [editline]8th January 2013[/editline] Am I using it right?
Mein Kampf is to get good grades at school
this is america, we speak american here.
this is promoting cultural awareness, cons need to fuck off.
Wikipedia tells me Jihad means inner spiritual struggle so none of those ads are even correct.
[t]http://imgkk.com/i/u_qq.jpg[/t] They just jihad to do that, didn't they?
Wikipedia tells me Jihad means inner spiritual struggle so none of those ads are even correct.
I declare jihad on Wikipedia.

The people running a counter-campaign against this are fuck nuggets.
this is america, we speak american here.
That last ad made by Gellar was the kind of shit that pisses me off. She clearly knows that she's just fucking stirring up a hornet's nest, just to mess with people for her own damn reasons. What a stupid bitch.
Jihad a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow.

I like how they put a picture of 9/11 next to Bin Laden, just in case we forgot who he was "Osama Bin Laden? He was a suspect in that OJ Simpson thing, wasn't he?"
Keyword is spiritual you derp..
My point was that linguistics isn't limited to a one sentence stub definition. It irritates me greatly when people argue semantics that way. When people say they struggle to keep fit. They don't exactly mean I Make forceful or violent efforts to get free of restraint or constriction of obesity now do they? EDIT: Hell even you picking up on the world 'spiritual' doesn't mean shit. Are you honestly saying it can't be a spiritual goal for Muslims to improve their own health and the health of their relationships?
Jihads? In MY internet?

I like this campaign, there is nothing more dangerous than encrusted prejudices and even it it backfires(and it only could if people are idiots) at least it sparks a discussion. I hope more people realize that "Jihad" as a bad word is just accepting the extremists use and interpretation of the word. How much we need to remind people to keep open about others: Look at the posts in this thread.
Pamela Geller is such an asshole. Yes the word jihad has now had such a negative connotation attached to it but it doesn't solely fucking mean that. Then when someone tries to tell the uninformed masses who only heard the word thrown around on the news by extremists, someone comes along and says "NO IT ONLY MEANS THIS NOW, AND IT WILL ALWAYS ONLY MEAN THIS NOW".
you jihad be kidding me.
What a dumbass
I'm pretty sure it's a well-known fact that most conservatives are dumbasses.
this is so unbelievably fucking racist yet it's considered ok in America. I mean you literally see Conservatives claim that "most Muslims" promote violence against Jews as if it were a fact and they aren't considered miserable racists who normally would get an enormous scandal over it. Why is it ok to paint nearly 2/7th's of the world's population (yes there are that many Muslims) as bad just for being middle eastern brown or "looking Muslim"?

Hating someone for their belief system is a far cry from hating them for their appearance. Functionally it is no different than hating someone for their political party or a group they choose to affiliate themselves with. Likening this to racism cheapens the term. EDIT: Note that this doesn't make the act any less stupid, I merely don't like to see the racism card pulled when it doesn't apply. Christians hating Muslims is about as sad as things get. They ultimately are extremely similar religions.
As someone who actually studies and speaks the Arabic language, I really appreciate this. Like. A lot. It's a little optimistic, but maybe people will hear about this, wonder what other inconsistencies exist in the media's use of this and other languages, and study learn about these things a little themselves. Or, they'll just know this one inconsistency and go on with their lives a little bit smarter. Seems like a win-win to me either way.

The Roman salute had been used in the US four decades before the Nazis came to power. White robes with pointed hoods had historically been religious garb. Holocaust referred to a burnt sacrificial offering to a god, and negro is just Spanish for black. You can't ignore how a symbol or word has been used and popularized, on the basis of its innocent origins. The word 'jihad' is very emotionally charged for a lot of people, it doesn't matter that the original term has a much more innocent meaning. If there's one word that symbolizes all the fear and hatred associated with Islamic terrorism, it's jihad. It's not a word you can toss around casually according to it's 'real' meaning, or fault people because they associate it with terrorism.
