• San Diego company develops incredible anti-shark suit
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery, and that's why a San Diego man took an ancient idea and made it even better. Most people will never wear a shark suit made out of chain maille, but a variation of that protective material may be the fabric of the future. The company is called Neptunic Technologies, and much of what they're working on is a secret. But this time next year, their product may be popping up in a store near you. If you've ever wondered what it feels like to be bitten by a shark, just ask the man who has sustained thousands of shark bites. "It's stimulating, it's fun if you do it safely, but it's incredibly dangerous," Jeremiah Sullivan said. Sullivan has appeared on more than 45 television shows and film projects demonstrating the Neptunic shark suit that he first invented in the 1970s. Decades later, Sullivan is using the technology of chain maille to make an even stronger, lighter shark suit that could sustain a great white shark attack. Sullivan is already selling his super-material called Neptech to the government and military. "Business is good," he said. It's a boast backed up by side-by-side comparisons. Sullivan uses scissors to cut through military materials, but the Neptech remains intact, which could mean endless possibilities for the military, law enforcement and action sports. I'd just make a suit of locking scale and use reverse joints to fill in the gaps left at the elbows and such. Lighter, cheaper and way better than maille. It's like when you see anti-shark suits and they've gone and duct-taped all the holes up after the sharks rip through it.
Now I may finally walk the streets safely again!
I'd use a suit that fucking exploded electric razorblade and cyanide shrapnel when bitten
I'd use a suit that fucking exploded electric razorblade and cyanide shrapnel when bitten
I'd hate to put that on inside out
Fuck, that shit would be invaluable at my job. I work with razor blades a lot, and some gloves made out of that shit would prevent more than a few injuries. He didn't showcase blunt trauma though. I mean surely it's the strength of a shark's jaws that causes the problem, then again if chainmail, which is notorious for being weak again that (hence medieval morning stars etc) can withhold maybe it's not as much as a problem as I thought.
That's pretty damn cool actually. I want a ten layer winter jacket.
Pff I've scuba dived with sharks before. [editline]27th February 2011[/editline] in an aquarium [editline]27th February 2011[/editline] they were nurse and leopard sharks :downs:

nurse and leopard sharks are poofters though so yeah anyway, kick ass material though
I was under the impression that shark attacks were sort of a non-issue because of how infrequently they occurred. Isn't creating a suit of chainmail to counter such a threat akin to wearing a heavy winter coat to the desert during the middle of summer in case of El Nino?
Jeremiah Sullivan is a badass. Though Neptunic has been around for awhile. This is hardly new. Though I think he's working on some badass dive suit that's not made of chain which might be what he's talking about. This suit can be the difference of having an arm or not. [editline]27th February 2011[/editline]
He didn't showcase blunt trauma though. If a shark gets a mouthful of metal on the first bite its not going to try to eat you. If a great white went full force on a human there's not much that's going to stop you from being lunch.
So now I could technically punch sharks without any chances of getting hurt? Damn, finally I can be like an Australian.
Now that i'm home... This is the classic Neptunic Suit: Jeremiah not giving a fuck: And yeah they are working on two more suits, a hard armor one and a wetsuit for more practical use like water sports. No pictures of those yet. They work good: That shark would have easily taken off his arm.
I like how he just casually attacks the reporter with the box cutter :v:
Yeah, I suppose you're right. On a professional level this suit would benefit anybody who works around sharks, or in the ocean in general. I hadn't really considered that! I was sitting here scratching my head and trying to imagine a family of tourists visiting the beaches in Florida decked out in a full suit of chainmail.
I bet the company's trial phase was messy.

I am a shark and this is bullshit

Why would you want them to bite you:
sweet, Now I just need to buy one of these, take a small child into the shark tank at sea world and rape the shit outta it.
sweet, Now I just need to buy one of these, take a small child into the shark tank at sea world and rape the shit outta it.
Rape what? The tank, the child, or the shark? Or all three?
Rape what? The tank, the child, or the shark? Or all three?
All of the above
sweet, Now I just need to buy one of these, take a small child into the shark tank at sea world and rape the shit outta it.
You're going to rape a child in a shark tank? Boy, o11'ers have some nasty issues. Not cool, man. Not cool. He's also a 'Mother fucker'. :ohdear: :smug: can I join.... ? /sarcasm
Why would you want them to bite you:
Huh. Turns out sharks are about a hundred times more adorable more than I thought they were. That shark was like a big puppy after the initial attempt to take his hand off. He's gonna lay awake in his cozy shark-house tonight and try to remember what that felt like.
