Such a move could target a range of civil society organizations, from the United Church of Canada and the Canadian Quakers to campus protest groups and labour unions. If carried out, it would be a remarkably aggressive tactic, and another measure of the Conservative government's lockstep support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While the federal government certainly has the authority to assign priorities, such as pursuing certain types of hate speech, to the RCMP, any resulting prosecution would require an assent from a provincial attorney general.
This might be the most extremist thing this government has done, what in the flying fuck
I hope they lose hard in the election.
use hate crime laws against Canadian advocacy groups that encourage boycotts of Israel
The sound of a Conservative loss in this year's election. Do it, Harper, you motherfucker, I triple dog dare you. End this nightmare for us all. This is a reminder that Harper vowed that Canada would defend Israel no matter the cost, and more recently went and renewed that vow to Israel's own parliament in an unprecedented speech.
Feel that? That's the pulsating cock of Israel rammed up our government's well-worn asshole.
France apparently does this already. Not that I agree with it. This'd be the easiest case for any accused to win as a violation of charter rights. The thing is, all 3 parties hate the group they'd primarily be targeting, the BDS, so don't expect to see much opposition to this from across the floor.
Israel was a shit idea

As much as I am loving these reactionary dares to Harper, do not fool yourself into believing that this would end support for Harper's Conservatives. You all place far too much faith in the electorate to do the right thing.
Alberta (the biggest conservative seat) just voted left-wing and won a majority government. think again
I'm hoping this carries over to the federal elections this year and, if nothing else, Harper loses his riding and as a result his seat in parliament.
Alberta (the biggest conservative seat) just voted left-wing and won a majority government. think again
The electoral politics of one province can hardly be used to predict what will happen at the national level. Don't kid yourself.
The electoral politics of one province can hardly be used to predict what will happen at the national level. Don't kid yourself.
When that province is home to the Prime Minister's election race, and its political allegiances have just switched, yes, it can have a big impact. A conservative defeat in Alberta could mean a new Prime Minister even if the CPC returns to the House with roughly the same number of seats (meaning, a majority). Since he took office, Harper has very much made the party his party. A change in leadership would have a dramatic impact on the political landscape even if the House doesn't flip.
i don't know much about canadian politics, but wouldn't going after christian religious organizations look EXTREMELY bad for conservatives?
Wasn't there some weird conspiracy theory that some governments were trying to keep Israel alive and trying to send as many jewish people there as possible to start Judgement day? Or am i crazy?
Alberta (the biggest conservative seat) just voted left-wing and won a majority government. think again
you mean how the vote got split between two conservative parties and a party with 40% of the popular vote got a majority?
i don't know much about canadian politics, but wouldn't going after christian religious organizations look EXTREMELY bad for conservatives?
United Church of Canada is pretty liberal and Quakers are kind of outcasts, I doubt it will hurt the Conservatives much.
Here we go. This is what happens when you let ridiculous "hate speech" laws to outlaw things you don't like hearing.
Israel isn't that bad. Netanyahu, on the other hand, is the worst thing that has happened to the human race.
Here we go. This is what happens when you let ridiculous "hate speech" laws to outlaw things you don't like hearing.
Hate speech laws in Canada are largely provincial and quite narrowly defined. None of them extend protections to countries or corporations. The only way the federal government could bypass the provinces and bring charges is using the criminal code's definition of hate speech, which only includes promoting genocide. So basically they have no power to actually do anything here (boycotts aren't genocide), but it's the intention that matters.
My fuck I can't wait til we get this piece out of office.
Alberta (the biggest conservative seat) just voted left-wing and won a majority government. think again
Latest polls have Tories 2% ahead of the Grits. NDP, like usual, have a snowball's chance.
My fuck I can't wait til we get this piece out of office.
And elect another party who'll suck Israel's dick just as much? As shitty as it is, Israel is one of the few things all the parties can agree on. As crazy as they can be, sometimes I wonder what would happen if we could make the Libertarians official opposition somehow.
