MOSCOW — A Russian opposition leader says he has been sentenced to community service on charges of beating a pro-Kremlin activist, which he has denied. Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov said the court in the Volga River city of Ulyanovsk ruled Wednesday that he must do 240 hours of community service. Anna Pozdnyakova, a 20 year old activist of the Young Guard pro-Kremlin youth movement, said Udaltsov hit her during an April rally. Udaltsov pleaded not guilty and said on Twitter that he would appeal the results of the “shameful” trial. The 35-year old Udaltsov has been at the forefront of protests against President Vladimir Putin. He has been arrested more than 100 times and spent months in prison. Udaltsov also launched numerous hunger strikes and spent weeks in hospitals. After the journalist allegedly being hit, she runs to a group of pro-Putin journalists and says that she was beat up by the said opposition leader, while smiling:
has it ever had a good government?
catherine the great is all I can think of
Stalin was pretty OK
Stalin was pretty OK
sure was, the only way to get in a position of power(lolcommunism) was to let him fuck your wife/daughter or sister. and if you looked at his paranoid ass funny have fun in serbia.
Gorbachev was okay.
Expected GenPol thread when I saw it on the ticker.
Stalin was pretty OK
'specially if you enjoy having lumps of lead embedded in your head and torso.
Stalin was pretty OK
Stalin and Hitler are just poor, misunderstood souls. :(
Looks like Genpol is back.
Thread title made me think he was gonna go to a secret gulag style camp until article said "community service"
You know I am slowly starting to share some of the paranoid-ish opinions that the journalist was either paid by government or was a governmental worker of some sorts
That's 10 days.
You know I am slowly starting to share some of the paranoid-ish opinions that the journalist was either paid by government or was a governmental worker of some sorts
Those are called 'agent provocateur', and are usually deployed by authoritarian governments against 'troublesome' opposition leaders.
Just an FYI, there's a huge difference between forced labor and community service. Forced labor makes it sound like he was shipped off to a Siberian coal mine or something, Christ.

yeah serious, misleading title
You know I am slowly starting to share some of the paranoid-ish opinions that the journalist was either paid by government or was a governmental worker of some sorts
im fairly certain every journalist that doesn't work for the government in russia is murdered a few days after writing a single news article

Anti-government journalists probably get threats or jailtime in Russia, but unless they hold some corruption-proving documents or something I don't think that nation would go as far as kill someone.

Usually, it's anti-corruption and human rights journalists that get killed, and they have to be very big time. My uncle is now partially deaf because a rather major anti-government activist lived right in front of his flat, on the same staircase. A bomb was detonated right at the said staircase, in front of that person's door. But that was in the early 2000s - now that the opposition is widespread and can't be detained like that anymore, such tactics have slowed down, and shit like imprisoning political activists takes place.

Send him to the gulag!
That's 10 days.
240 hours * 1 day / 24 hours = 10 days? /gasp
Stalin was pretty OK
nuh uh Hitler was OK Stalin was GREAT
240 hours * 1 day / 24 hours = 10 days? /gasp
Unless you divide it into 8 hour work days, in which case it's 30 days, or roughly a month.
catherine the great is all I can think of
Alexander II of Russia was a good guy towards Finland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_II_of_Russia
That's 10 days.
He'll probably get another ten days after that and then another etc etc It's like that band Pussy Riot, they are being held for "hooliganism" for months
