Shonens live, believe it or not, because of the story. And when people say the like the story, they also like the characters it offers, the conflicts it offers, humor and everything in terms of writing. While DBZ doesn't have the best story, it was pretty huge back then. Nowadays it's pretty normal and considered a bit outdated if you did a story in DBZ style.

I mean, it is his style but he labels it as FOP because even fans of the show might not recognize his name alone. And when something gets adaptor animation it has to be drawn several times a second so it gets adjusted and simplified; his drawings look different than the show but it's clearly still the same style.
