A 9-year-old boy from North Carolina was bullied — punched, pushed and called names — for bringing a My Little Pony lunch sack to school. The school has responded by telling the boy, Grayson Bruce, to leave the sack at home, calling it a “trigger for bullying.”
Grayson says My Little Pony is his favorite cartoon. In a statement, the school said that Grayson’s bag “created a disruption in the classroom.” The school said they were looking into the conduct of the bullies but have, to date, taken no public action.
Grayson’s mom, Noreen, objected to the school’s position, telling their local ABC affliate that “saying a lunchbox is a trigger for bullying, is like saying a short skirt is a trigger for rape. It’s flawed logic, it doesn’t make any sense.”
The incident has created a growing grassroots movement online supporting Grayson. Over 15,000 people have joined the “Support For Grayson” Facebook page. Even Glenn Beck showed his support this morning by appearing with a My Little Pony doll on his radio show, telling Grayson “there are jerks everywhere.” (Beck, however, interspersed his words of encouragement with unrelated and seemingly transphobic commentary.)
This is not the first time that male fans of My Little Pony, called Bronies, have been subject to harassment. In February, an 11-year-old boy tried to commit suicide after experiencing relentless bullying for being a fan of My Little Pony. He faces “potentially life-long brain damage.” The Brony community has since raised $73,000 to support the costs of his recovery.
I get what the kids mum is saying, but wearing an MLP bag, at a school is like asking to be bullied.
There's no way around it, that's just they way kids are.
Isn't an act like that just bullying and persecution in of itself?
punish the bullies, not the kid.
why do schools always do this backward shit
my little pony is a trigger for being called a faggot and autistic retard on the internet
so yeah, it's probably going to be worse effects in person
for once, school banned something good

It's a free country. While MLP fans might be MLP fans, they usually don't hurt anything with their presence outside of mildly annoying avatars. Also, he's 9.
"We're afraid that students wearing this might be bullied, so we're going to bully them into not wearing it".
Seriously, how about doing something about the kids who're actually attacking their classmates rather than blaming the victim and restricting their own freedom of expression.

Shitty kids maybe.
The kid's 9 years old, I can understand if he likes MLP or whatever. Still, he'd probably be better off if he realized he'd get an easier time if he just kept it at home.
Or the schools could actually fucking do something about bullying to let people express themselves without fear.
but the thing is that it's banning a symptom, not the source.
the source is that kids are judgmental little shits whose parents need to teach them better and/or have parents who aren't close minded bigots themselves.
but no, let's just tack on another band-aid on the problem and pretend that will solve it.
after all, boys will be boys won't they?

I'm not saying he can't like MLP or anything but let's face it, every school is gonna have that wee chode who thinks they're hot shit and bullies folk.

people are at their cruelest when they're children, have you ever tried just telling a kid to stop doing something?

If he's 9 then stopping it now is probably a good thing.

Yeah, but who should the school be trying to correct? The "wee chode" (and probably the parents thereof), or as the school is doing in this case: his victim?
Meanwhile at my college, all the athletes and a few normal-looking students use child-themed backpacks with stuff like Power Ranger and Spongebob just for the hell of it.

I agree about the MLP backback being a big target.
But I'm sure there could have been a more rational way to go about it without straight up telling the young boy that he'll be harassed to kingdom come for wearing it.

liking the show and identifying as a brony are not synonymous

Nah I agree, just saying that it might be worth doing something to help the kid while the school works through the issue.

Kid should be able to wear any kind of backpack he wants.

bullies will bully no matter what, they will find something, anything, to pick on you
even if they went after the bully, and made it have a harsher consequence, the result is just going to be harsher from the bully.
this is probably a safe action

Can you not defend the existence of bullying? tia

The saying "Boys will be boys" is partially correct when not taken out of context and used by retards to legitimize ridiculous behavior. Young children teasing and what not is completely normal, that being said it should also still be punished. They shouldn't have banned him from wearing his backpack, he would have eventually been teased for it by other kids and grown up out of it, like most boys. Keep in mind he's still really young so it's OKAY for him to like it. It's if he doesn't grow up and still likes it in his teenage years is where you've got a problem unfolding.
why don't schools fucking punish the bullies like they fucking should

Wearing a skirt like that is just asking to be raped.
There's no way around it, it's just the way men are.
I got suspended in middle school. Not because I ended up breaking a kid's nose in a fight when he was bullying me and I got sick of it. No, no, I got suspended for having a mohawk because it was "disruptive."
I sat in the back of the class in every class so no one had a hard time seeing the board, I was never disruptive and the smartest kid in all my classes. The best part? The bully didn't even get in trouble in the end, he just got a warning.
The U.S. school system is a fucking farce.

Probably because Power Rangers & Spongebob are more accepted franchises among normal individuals.
MLP is more your typical girly thing.
I'm seeing people rating me dumb, but wasn't the intended audience of MLP aimed towards young girls first?
