I never understood that lightsaber scene, he holds the saber like a heavy sword and yet a light saber is just a handle.
Still that face part.

They actually had used lightsabers with the tubes in them to actually have some weight to them, he's not just holding a handle

Alright. Let me try again. If you look at the orginal films they hold it as if it was light and even in the newer films they hold it as it is a very light weapon to wield but this guy holds it as if he's lifting a giant metal pole and having to put all his force into just moving it.

I thought it was a fighting style, big slow swings to throw off the opponent.

From my understanding the lightsabers aren't just plain beams but have plasma moving up and back down to the hilt sort of like a chainsaw. So while the plasma doesn't add weight the momentum acts like a gyroscope making the saber take more force to move around. Since Kylo's is so unstable and has the guards it could make it just take a lot more effort to move around.
Also it means that the sabers actually do have a 'cutting' edge and so they can make unclean hits and is also why two sabers would have such an adverse reaction to hitting each other.

(Within Star Wars Lore) When the lightsaber is powered on, the contained plasma blade creates a huge gyroscopic force. So they become extremely 'heavy' and difficult to swing. And it's only because of the force Jedi and Sith are able to wield it so easily, which is why almost no one but Jedi/Sith wield them.
If you notice in the original trilogy, everyone held onto them with two hands when they were fighting with them, and Lucas even told them to imagine that it weighed 50 pounds
But then the prequels came and we don't talk about that shit okay
2:27 and I thought the joke was going nowhere, now im dying.

It's probably his shitty swordsman ship, layered on top of his janky light saber and his obsession with being a cool guy jedi.
As far as the original movies go, Obi Wan was an actual Jedi. It's possible he could have taught Luke to not be a shit with his light saber, though I'm just speculating wildly here based off the one new movie.

Out of all the people who have replied so far this makes the most sense, the prequels told all the jedi and sith how to correctly hold a light saber.
Still i don't get why people hate the prequels the new movie was complete garbage.

This combined with the fact Kylo is a DIY Sith. I'd anticipate that in the sequels he'll become either more refined.

Pretty sure they were always supposed to have some weight about them. I remember George Lucas making a fuss at some point about how originally everyone had to wield light sabers 2 handed for some reason, I forget.

they don't hold them as if they were light in the original films though
the point of jedi is that they're space knights, the lightsabers were just cool and powerful-looking swords updated to fit the space theme. nobody really cared about the physics involved, their purpose was to look like imposing, slow moving swordsmen, not the circus acrobats from the prequels
