Officer sues Wal-Mart for firing him for carrying gun while working as police officer
A Pennsylvania police officer is suing Wal-Mart after he says he was fired for carrying his police-issued gun while in the store.
According to the lawsuit, store managers told the police department not to send Zuby to the store if police were called.
The police chief refused the request.
What a surreal situation. If he's there as a customer rather than an employee, why does he have abide by employee-only rules?
Dumbasses, really. He is a cop and not working for you at that point in time. Get the hell out of here.
Sorry Wal-Mart, An On Duty, Uniformed officer carries his gun. Period. (Unless it's a booking room, jail, prison, or some court houses) If he were off duty it would be different but if he's on duty or he's there on official business (And he was there for BOTH), that overrides your stupid policy, private property or not
I know a lot of places like to hire actual police officers as security, and a lot of officers take up these second jobs for the extra money. But tell me what in the fuck is the point if you want them to leave their weapons at home?
Good. I hope Walmart loses.
A cop in uniform without a gun at a wal-mart would be like dropping off a toddler at a daycare run by pedophiles.
Law > employement policy
Get your head straight
Reminds me of the story of a school in Arizona that told a father that he couldn't drop off/pick up his kid while in uniform. What a joke.
In 3rd grade not only did a uniformed cop drop me off at school, I went in a patrol car
I like that the police chief basically gave them two big middle fingers held high at their request. Walmart is going to get destroyed. If there's only party that has more money to throw at lawyers than big corporation, it's the government.
I don't want to make Walmart feel like the victim here but this is a liability issue gone wrong.
The reason why Walmart has this policies is not because they think it's the right thing, it's because they want to make themselves immune to lawsuits and other shit even though there is a 0% chance of them being sued if that cop has to use their gun.
it's a fairly well written standard that you leave your weapon in your car when off-duty security
so

just realized he was on-duty sorry

just realized he was on-duty sorry (clearly too late of an edit)

Too bad that didn't work for them.
What possible benefit is there for the employer to make these demands?

Here is a secret: He wasn't off-durty security. He was on-duty cop that happened to be at the place he worked when off-duty.
Too bad that didn't work for them.
Yeah the irony of the situation is that they're getting sued because they tried to prevent a future lawsuit.

"While in uniform and on-duty, Michael Zuby said he stopped by the Wal-Mart store where he was employed to grab some lunch."
Yee. Employees aren't supposed to carry even when your not on shift, apparently. We've talked about it at my store.
Not that that should apply to an ON DUTY POLICE OFFICER.

It's a fairly well written standard that you have to read the articles before posting.

None, Walmart is just stupid. I have friends that worked there and they can vouch for that. The managers are all either lazy or incompetent, but almost always useless.

yes, however it was more of an oversight i simply interpreted it as off-duty
but thank you for your post after the fact i edited it, and to others
(i also failed elementary reading)
Yep this sounds like something Walmart would do. I hate working for these stupid fucks
URL is absolutely broke for me...

Are you supposing that patrons of Wal-Mart are sexually predatory towards law enforcement officers?
According to a report from The Times-Tribune, Zuby was told store employees are never allowed to carry a gun while on the property.
Zuby explained he was required by law to carry the gun while on-duty as an officer.
I am all for shitting on the Waltons as much as the next socially conscious keyboard warrior, but the solution here is for him not to go to Wal-Mart while he is on-duty. He shouldn't be a police officer if he can't understand basic rules. I know it is backwards, but there is nothing compelling him to go to Wal-Mart as a LEO. He is clearly in the wrong here, even though ethically it doesn't make a lot of sense to fire him. Maybe the judge can set a precedent, and Cops can bring guns wherever they please for any reason they want, is that preferred?

Officers have to be armed while on-duty. That walmart is in their police district. Police chief told them to suck a big one with their (walmart) request to send this particular officer to some other store because that is stupid and in a event of a emergency, they can't be fucking about trying to figure out if this fucking squad car is allowed somewhere.
Lawsuit is completely valid.
I hope he gets sent to every call made at that wal-mart

I wouldn't wish that upon anyone

I stand corrected.

Not a shift goes by where Walmart doesn't call.
