Mississippi Wants to Pass the "Jesus Take the Wheel" Bill: Church-owned Vehicles Won't be Required t
House members on Thursday [Feb. 5] passed a bill exempting mid-sized church buses from the state’s commercial driver’s license requirements, prompting one lawmaker to call it the “Jesus Take the Wheel Act.”
The bill, HB 132, would help congregations lacking a CDL-certified driver transport up to 30 passengers in a church-owned vehicle…
…
Current law requires CDL-certified drivers for any vehicle transporting more than 16 passengers, including the driver. The bill would amend that law to exempt church buses designed to carry 30 passengers or less.
It’s a ridiculous and potentially-harmful exemption. Keep in mind that obtaining a CDL license isn’t that hard. You simply have to pass a written test, a driving test, and a physical exam.
If they were only endangering their own lives, I'd say fuck 'em. But this is going to be putting an exceptionally large vehicle in the hands of potentially inexperienced drivers on very busy roadways. This will end badly.
Your avatar is appropriate.
I didn't hit that family, Jesus did.
Why would that ever have the slightest bit of hope of passing? it doesn't matter who owns the vehicle, it requires a commercially licensed driver.

Because this is AMERICA!!!
yessss finally i can drive my semi-truck
Don't you only need a Class B for that?
If so, that's pretty simple to acquire.
If your church has a congregation sizable enough that you need to own a 30-person bus, how is it that not -one- of you is able to get a CDL?
i don't see the need for this bill
yep, that's my state alright. I hope to hell this doesn't pass, that is so fucking stupid that I can't even fathom who in the world would believe this is a good idea. besides a mississippian, of course.
mississippi lmao
The lord giveth and the lord taketh away.
The title is wrong, you still have to have a license to drive, just not a CDL. (not that I approve of it)
Silly Mississippi, Jesus doesn't know how to drive!
I feel like we need to be a lot harsher on churches
why should a church be treated any different from any other non profit organization out there? Because its a church? that's completely stupid.
it seems like their are a few churches that get away with stuff just because they're churches.
stop treating them like some kind of special magic area and treat them as they are. Non-profit organizations.

Meh, it just means that if there isn't a CDL driver in your congregation, then it's ok.
Honestly, I don't see how this could create a problem. It will most likely be used by churches to do things like community service or trips or whatnot. The only slight problem I see has to do with air brakes on busses, but even that's pretty easy to learn about. As long as it's congregation members only, it shouldn't be a problem.

a bus isn't nearly the same as driving a car surely
I let Jesus take the wheel once and he nearly crashed my car.
I think that we should make sure Jesus has a driver's license before we pass this bill.

Seems unlikely, since he can just fly or teleport anywhere.

I don't really give a shit why we're letting unqualified drivers behind the wheels of these vehicles. Simple fact of the matter is a bus that large is a difficult vehicle to drive. It's big, it's unwieldy, it doesn't behave in a normal way, it has huge blind spots. There's a damn good reason they need a CDL with a passenger endorsement, which is not difficult to get I might add, to drive.
Mississippi is fucking stupid if they pass this.
Some lawmakers consider America a Christian nation. They think they help the Christians by passing such laws. Laws like this is what makes the state and even the nation a theocracy. In the end everyone, including the Christians would be better off with purely secular laws.
This is exactly what Sean Faircloth criticises. This is a long video, but it mentions very similar laws and explains why lawmakers think them up.

Most certainly not. Empty a bus of that size weighs in the neighborhood of 15,000 pounds, and fully loaded it may get upwards of 30K depending on how much stuff the passengers are carrying with them. They're unwieldy, they handle like shit, they have huge blind spots, the brakes act wierdly/nothing close to how car brakes act, and then there's the whole 'Most of the passengers aren't buckled in' aspect of it.
There's a GOOD reason why you need a CDL with a passenger endorsement to drive a vehicle like that.

Actually, not much different at all. You don't need a CDL to drive a fire truck, and those are even more dangerous due to the giant tank of sloshing water. The only difference is the brakes. Air brakes don't act exactly like hydraulic brakes. But that's easy to get used to. Other than that, it's pretty much the same. The only difference is that you have to use your side mirrors. There is no rear view per-say, so things like backing up are a bit more challenging, but if you take your time, it's no problem.
This doesn't seem like a big deal, CDL requirements are fucked anyway. You need a CDL to drive a semi-truck hauling a trailer, but a pickup with a camper hooked up to it is a-okay. Same with Bus / RV requirements, or towtruck vs pickup truck.

so can goku but at least he tried

You should.

\There's a whole hell of a lot more different driving a medium sized bus compared to driving a car, or even an SUV towing a camper trailer.
There should never be any kind of exception of any kind of license. That license says "I gave been properly trained and am qualified to operate this machine." If one doesn't have the proper license, you have to assume that they are unfit to drive that vehicle. Why would you ever give an exception for an inexperienced driver, just because of religious association?

same reason why someone thought we needed a prayer in school law to be passed, because lord jesus.
I fucking hate living in mississippi
personally I have enough issues driving an automatic pontiac 2 door
me behind the wheel of a bus means people basically die :v:
Imagine people like me being allowed to drive a bus.

but I said that (surely) they must be different, so I'm agreeing with you
but at least you made an informative and useful post
I just word things funny I guess

But a bus is nearly the same as driving an RV, and guess what you dont need to drive one of those.
