The Metropolitan police have confirmed that their officers would arrest the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange if he left the Ecuadorian embassy in London to go to hospital for a medical examination.
Ecuador’s foreign minister, Ricardo Patiño, said Assange, who has been living in the embassy for more than three years, should be given safe passage to hospital for an MRI scan to help diagnose a pain in his shoulder.
The Foreign Office said Assange, who is subject to a European arrest warrant over an allegation of rape in Sweden, will not be prevented by the British authorities from receiving medical treatment. But it said questions over his arrest were a matter for the Met, which this week scaled back its costly 24-hour surveillance of the embassy.
Scotland Yard confirmed that Assange would face arrest if he stepped outside the embassy, even if a mobile MRI scanner were parked outside the building in Knightsbridge, central London.
Always good to see that tax payer money is being put to good use.
didn't they give up on the case though?
didn't they give up on the case though?
The only thing they gave up on was 24/7 surveillance.

with all that cctv they have 24/7 surveillance regardless
Irrc, isn't there a parking garage in the embassy? Why not bring the MRI trailer inside the garage?
Question, What if you get a bunch of people to turn up at the embassy dress up as him and begin walking out the door as he does? Clearly they can't check a few hundred people at once.
Cars with diplomatic plates are treated as moving embassies, why don't they just stick him in one of those?

Because you can't put a mobile MRI in the back of a Merc S-class.

Fair point, but you could drive out of police jurisdiction.

Ahh yes, the ocean.

Have to leave the country for that.
Sounds like a job for Doctors Without Borders. Bring an MRI into foreign territory!
Though yeah thats a huge waste of their resources
So police say they'll do their job pretty much? I mean it's shitty for him but what else would they say?
They could just drive the mri to him. I've seen one at a local hospital it was inside of a modified transit bus.

Why not slap a diplomatic plate on something large enough for a mobile MRI scanner to fit in?

Why not spend all the money he has from selling the books he writes, on all the parts needed to construct an MRI scanner in the embassy. Let's not talk crazy now.
If I was him I'd just give myself up and get this shit over with. IMO it's better to be a prisoner with a release date, with some of the public behind you demanding your release, than being your own jailer for life.

if i had leaked important documents there's no way i'd give myself up to the government of said documents
Look what happened to Bradley (Chelsea?) manning, imagine what'd happen to assange

i'd much rather be in a building i have most of my rights in than somewhere i have almost none of them in
I'm just saying he can't stay there forever, I mean maybe he can but how? Eventually he's going to try to leave or he's going to be forced to and if he's at the end of his life that just ensures he'll always be a captive. Get it over with now when he still will have a life after, or at least try to get smuggled out and if he gets caught then so be it he tried.

He's not wanted for that. Sweden wants to try him on rape/molestation charges.

Bradley Manning was subject to US military law, as a soldier in the US Army. Assange is not, but then again, the US has repeatedly said they don't want him. Sweden wants him.
He should face trial for the rape/molestation charges, don't see anything wrong with that. Good on them for doing their jobs. Just because he's done a lot of good doesn't mean he's above the law..
His life must be so boring inside that embassy 24/7

Chesley manning abused her security clearance as a Soldier and released a whole bunch of documents that had no relevance or effect besides damaging international relations. I would argue for Edward Snowden's case but Manning got everything she deserved.
