Germany to offer a €5,000 incentive for electric vehicles, build 15,000 charging stations and subsid

[QUOTE]The German ministries of economics, transport and environment reportedly agreed on a new incentive program for electric vehicles that will include a €5,000 discount at the purchase starting July 1st.
...
“In a joint paper, Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD), Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks (SPD) calculate a financial need for the premium of a total of 1.3 billion euros.”
...
The amount is set to decrease by €500 every year and be completely phased out by the end of the decade.
Under the new initiative, the government also plans to finance 15,000 new charging stations across the country and to subsidize battery research.

Does it also apply for hybrids and stuff ? How many true EV except Tesla cars are even out there ? Until we have cheaper electric cars this will only help the rich who can already afford these expensive cars.

The point of things like this is to get electric cars into the mainstream.

Thanks. It would be cool if car companies would partner with solar panel and battery manufacturers, so you can buy a car, power wall like the one Tesla sells, and(or) solar panels in one package, put those on the garage/house and be fully independent.

Solar city and several other companies are starting to do powerwall and solar panel packages if that counts? If you are talking about using the battery to power the house and the car then it's probably not a good idea. The best chemistry for a car battery isn't the best chemistry for powering a house.

I was thinking you put few solar panels on the garage that charge the powerwall during the day, then when you get back from work in the evening you use it to refill the car over night. It would make sense to sell the whole solution in one package; car, solar panels and powerwall.
And why wouldn't it be a good idea to power your house too ? Tesla Powerwall is designed for that too, though that would require a lot of solar panels and several powerwalls to store the energy.
Holy shit Germany, what's gotten into you lately? Just a few months ago you were a place to joke about, and now you pull awesome stunts like this? Jeeshh

Exactly. How are prices supposed to go lower if there's no incentive to buy them and thus creating no incentive to make them if there aren't any buyers to sell to? Simply put demand needs to go up before prices can go down low demand obviously causes high prices because it's a niche market right now.

Well yes in theory you could set up a bunch of Powerwalls that powered the house and then you charged the car's battery off of that. It would be cost prohibitive to set up enough Powerwalls to fully charge the car's battery though. You would need at least 15 of the things to do a 0 - 100 charge. I was saying it would be a bad idea to use one battery that you used for both the car and the house interchangeably, since a car battery isn't ideal for that. Although maybe a way to use it as a backup solution once in awhile might be cool.
It wouldn't make economic sense to do the powerwall thing though.

You are right. I wasn't aware the car battery in Tesla cars for example are so much bigger than the powerwalls they sell, and they are too expensive for the amount of energy they can store. We really need a revolution in battery technology.

Well the Gigafactory that Tesla are building will vastly reduce the cost of batteries. It should be finished in 2020 but will start producing cells beforehand. We know that they will reduce the cost of Li-Ion batteries to at least $150 /KWh and Musk has hinted that it will be probably be even quite a bit lower.
