Mildura Police are urging motorists to be careful when relying on the mapping system on the Apple i-phones operating on the iOS 6 system after a number of motorists were directed off the beaten track in recent weeks.
Local Police have been called to assist distressed motorists who have become stranded within the Murray-Sunset National Park after following directions on their Apple i-phone.
Tests on the mapping system by police confirm the mapping systems lists Mildura in the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park, approximately 70km away from the actual location of Mildura.
Police are extremely concerned as there is no water supply within the Park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees, making this a potentially life threatening issue.
Some of the motorists located by police have been stranded for up to 24 hours without food or water and have walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get phone reception.
Police have contacted Apple in relation to the issue and hope the matter is rectified promptly to ensure the safety of motorists travelling to Mildura.
Anyone travelling to Mildura or other locations within Victoria should rely on other forms of mapping until this matter is rectified.

here's what the national park looks like:

Well done apple. Should have kept with google maps.
This shit wouldn't even sneak past Steve Jobs if he was alive
maybe motorists should have some god damn common sense and not blindly follow a GPS wherever it tells you to go
This wouldn't happen with android users :)
Well done apple. Should have kept with google maps.
no, because now iOS gets an official Google Maps app
This wouldn't happen with android users :)
Please don't start this, both devices have their ups and downs
or you could just use the browser app google provided which works fine just that its a bit of a hit and miss
I blame the people more than iOS. People should already know that when they use a GPS they should be double checking the routes against other maps and be using it as either a supplement or as a last resort.
It surprises and distresses me how faithfully people follow their maps, reminds me of the case of a bloke driving his car into a river because satnav said; though Apple shouldn't be let off the hook for such a massive and potentially life-threatening error.
46 degrees?
man thats one cold desert if thats the maximum temperature!!!
46 degrees?

Celsius.
When we rented a car with SatNav it loved to lead us down long Albertan dirt farm roads.
Jesus frick where was the original destination
Cause people are really going to pull out another map and double check it with the gps you use. Please, if half of you can even drive and have a phone/gps then you just put the address in and follow it.

I feel pretty confident in my GPS dunno about you.
My house doesnt even exist on iOS Maps yet.
As well as my suburb
These people could at least have known that they were going the wrong way though
They probably won't be able to sue because Apple will pull some bullshit card saying they advised people not to use it
When the icon tells you to drive off a bridge, you should probably not trust it :v:

they listed alternatives while they improve on the mapping service, even the appstore had a section saying "maps for your phone" because that's how embarrassed they felt

Deserts can be cold or warm.

Reminds me of the geniuses who make hard turns the second their GPS screams "TURN LEFT NOW" at them without even paying attention to the road. Like this woman here.
Railroad tracks run in between the avenue, and the woman turned left when the GPS told her to instead of actually LOOKING to see that her turn was still >50 feet away. For some extra irony: left turns are illegal at the intersection she turned onto the railroad tracks to begin with, so the GPS was wrong to even tell her to turn left.
honey it says proceed for 45 cubic kilometers and the destination will be on your right
dear what does it look like?
a big desert
okay keep driving
Please don't start this, both devices have their ups and downs
it was a joke
Reminds me of the office where micheal drives his car into the lake because the GPS told him to.
I'm waiting for someone to follow their GPS off a cliff.
Honestly it's not that big of a stretch from following it out into the middle of the desert.

To be fair, there can be cold deserts.
Like Antarctica.

Not very long ago around here some tourists drove into the ocean because their GPS told them to, I can understand not knowing the area, but shouldn't common sense kick in?
Edit: Hell, Google Maps will tell you to kyak across an ocean, doesn't mean you should.
