Some of you may remember cosmic duck's donation drive thread for this website, way back in '08. If you don't, allow me to give you a bit of background information. FreeRice.com donates ten grains of rice for every question you answer correctly on their website. They purchase rice with ad revenue. Cool, right? Well, with the Haiti disaster fresh in my mind, I thought it would be a good idea to start another donation drive. You are all competent with computers; this should be a cinch for you all. There are several subjects on the website, each with its own set of questions. Basic Math, English Vocab, Famous Works of Art, Locations of Countries, etc. You aren't punished for getting answers wrong. You really won't get anywhere answering the questions by hand, though. Unless you want to test your intelligence, there's an easier way. First off, get Greasemonkey if you don't already have it, it's an addon for Firefox. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748 Then install this userscript: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/39805 When you have the script installed, go to www.FreeRice.com and click the change subject button. Click 'Multiplication Tables' and answer the first question. The userscript will take over from that point on, no work required. Leave it on overnight so you can donate rice in your sleep. No effort at all. There's no reason not to do this. So, let's crunch numbers. Say FreeRice gave every person in Haiti one pound of rice; this would keep one person well fed for a day. The "accepted" number of grains in a pound of rice is around 29,000. I ran this script for about 15 minutes on my computer and I allocated close to 30,000 grains. So, if you donate 120,000 grains of rice in one hour, and you sleep for nine hours, that's 1,080,000 grains of rice, or 37 lbs of food, or 37 people you just fed for an entire day, and you did it while sleeping. Now imagine hundreds of you doing this. That's a lot of rice. Do the right thing; keep this script running and help support those less fortunate then you. Not only does it keep them alive, you will feel good for doing it. So do it! When you're done for the day, save your grain total in this Pastebin file. We can add together all the totals in a few days to see how we're doing. Thanks! http://pastebin.com/d2e916e4a Oh, and here's my total at the moment:
this is a great cause for those of you without money
Ill better do the math by myself That way I'll feel more satisfied
Is it right to bot for a good cause?
Is it right to bot for a good cause?
sure, the ads refresh so why not
I used to do this with about 20 tabs open over night.
Wasn't this originally just defining words? Anyway, as evil as it sounds, I would feel bad if I botted because I'm cheating advertisers out of money. Of course, I still answer the questions.
The only ad is the fight world hunger one, and I'm pretty sure we're doing that...
Currently running 4 tabs, great idea OP.
Wasn't this originally just defining words? Anyway, as evil as it sounds, I would feel bad if I botted because I'm cheating advertisers out of money. Of course, I still answer the questions.
Would you click the ads if you were doing it manually? Probably not. I'm assuming they get money when the ads are displayed, not clicked. Besides, the only ads I've seen are for "end world hunger" type organizations, so if their money is going towards feeding the hungry, well...
The only ad is the fight world hunger one, and I'm pretty sure we're doing that...
Exactly.
They make us do this for extra credit in school
I did this at my school.
Userscript works great with Chrome. [editline]12:48AM[/editline] Holy shit, running 8 tabs.
Good work. I give you my internet respect.
They make us do this for extra credit in school
How much extra credit do you get for each grain?
Do Haitians eat rice? I hope so or they'd better be thankful for what they get.
I'm certainly sure that they can tell if end-users are using bots to dramatically increase the speed of answering the correct questions here. So I'm not too certain if they will include those results of users who use bots.
So where do I collect the rice
So where do I collect the rice
go to africa
Wasn't there a Free Rice day organized by one of the mods a while back?
I'm certainly sure that they can tell if end-users are using bots to dramatically increase the speed of answering the correct questions here. So I'm not too certain if they will include those results of users who use bots.
oh please rice is like a dollar a pound, who cares if you bot 37 dollars worth of food overnight (they shouldn't if they're sincere about ending world hunger) if i'm answering the questions and refreshing the ads who cares how fast i'm doing it, maybe i'm real good at math
Wasn't there a Free Rice day organized by one of the mods a while back?
if you read the first sentence you may find out
Actually if you get a question wrong they go to Africa and steal food from starving children and give it to rich people
Ugh, we did this during health class on Fridays (nothing ever planned). I ended up racking around 3,400-some grains in one class...

Warez - BB
Wtf a popup for adult friend finder came up when on this...
Dayum, I want some rice too.
4 tabs running right now, Total about 10,000 grains I feel like a good person :-)
This is kind of a dick thing to do. "Yeah we have all this rice but we won't feed starving people with it unless you answer a bunch of questions for us."
This is kind of a dick thing to do. "Yeah we have all this rice but we won't feed starving people with it unless you answer a bunch of questions for us."
They don't have all that rice. They pay it with the money given for the ads. (which I don't see at all cause of adblock :v:)
