A newly unearthed “supermassive” dinosaur, Dreadnoughtus schrani, is the largest known land animal for which mass can be accurately calculated, concludes a new study. Its name might be a tongue-twister, but Leikupal Laticauda has vaulted into the upper reaches of dinosaur stardom. The dinosaur, whose scientific name means “fear nothing” and is nicknamed “Dread,” is described in the latest issue of Scientific Reports. Dread measured 85 feet long and weighed about 65 tons, according to the study, which also reports that the dinosaur’s skeleton is the most complete ever found for its type.
http://news.discovery.com/animals/dinosaurs/colossal-new-dinosaur-was-one-of-worlds-largest-140904.htm [editline]4th September 2014[/editline] That is one metal dinosaur name
Jesus christ
Kenneth Lacovara said that Dread “weighed as much as a dozen African elephants or more than seven T. rex.” Not surprisingly, this dinosaur had no known predators. If its sheer massiveness did not scare away hungry others, its “weaponized tail” would have.
Friendly reminder that a Blue Whale weights 170,000kg and up, yet we don't call it Obesissimus Maximus
Friendly reminder that a Blue Whale weights 170,000kg and up, yet we don't call it Obesissimus Maximus
Nah, we reserve that for your mum. Lol #rekt
Friendly reminder that a Blue Whale weights 170,000kg and up, yet we don't call it Obesissimus Maximus

The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the baleen whales (Mysticeti).[3] At 30 metres (98 ft)[4] in length and 170 tonnes (190 short tons)[5] or more in weight, it is the largest existing animal and the heaviest that ever existed.

The specific name musculus is Latin and could mean "muscle", but it can also be interpreted as "little mouse".[18] Carl Linnaeus, who named the species in his seminal Systema Naturae of 1758,[19] would have known this and may have intended the ironic double meaning.

Friendly reminder that a Blue Whale weights 170,000kg and up, yet we don't call it Obesissimus Maximus
There is a scientific term for pretty much every animal ever, even the common dog
Blue Whale isn't as impressive. It's in water. Land Animals have to support all that weight
That is one big ass Dinosaur....
It's kinda strange that they didn't do a size comparison with a Blue Whale.
There is a scientific term for pretty much every animal ever, even the common dog
It would be strange for the common dog to not have a scientific name, when it's one of the most widespread species interacting with humans.
There is a scientific term for pretty much every animal ever, even the common dog
I know that well. I was just pointing out that that latin name is really silly.
It's kinda strange that they didn't do a size comparison with a Blue Whale.
They were talking land animals, and a blue whale beats a FEARNOTHINGSAURUS by a long shot, it woul've looked puny in comparison. They used a boeing 737 because it was ideal to give a seemingly impressive benchmark.
It would be strange for the common dog to not have a scientific name, when it's one of the most widespread species interacting with humans.
I guess it was a bad example...
It's kinda strange that they didn't do a size comparison with a Blue Whale.
I think they were focusing on land animals is why.
I think they were focusing on land animals is why.
Well, what I meant about that is that I'd have wished to seen a size comparison of the largest land-animal with the largest animal instead of needing to combine separate imagery to do so.
I am curious is that average size or they just found a really big specimen, or maybe a small one ? I mean if they found a basketball player or a random Joe.
I am curious is that average size or they just found a really big specimen, or maybe a small one ? I mean if they found a basketball player or a random Joe.
They literally found one complete skelleton of the thing, so I guess it's average.
I think they were focusing on land animals is why.
Aye, my favorite of all land animals is the truly majestic Boeing 737
Aye, my favorite of all land animals is the truly majestic Boeing 737
Well it does have wheels.....
Damn, my country must have been a breeding ground for this kind of "supermassive" dinosaurs, i once went to a museum where they keep a copy of one of the original Argentinosaurus vertebrae and that thing is huge.
This thread is excellent.

Tyrannosaurus rex just means 'King of the tyrant lizards', and the only reason that doesn't look fucking ridiculous is because we're used to it.

It looks cute.
Alright, now let's get a DNA sample and make one.

I'd like to see this in a Jurassic Park movie.
