[quote]Authorities in north China's Hebei province have started demolishing hundreds of chimneys and coal-fired boilers in an effort to tackle air pollution.
They aim to tear down 1,026 chimneys and 734 coal-fired boilers across Handan City in the course of just 100 days.

I don't get the deal with toppling "chimneys" per se. Chimneys on their own have nothing to do with inherently generating pollution. They only put exhaust above ground level. If the chimneys aren't being used then they probably would have been demolished anyways eventually.
What are these boilers being replaced with?

All the confiscated bicycles.
Finally those rogue chimney-starter's will be put to an end! Problem solved, right?

They're just moving it further away...
If only they could harvest the energy from those underground coal mines that will be burning for 1000 years.
