BEIJING - A time-lapse video shows a wave of smog rolling into China's Beijing capital city in what has been called the "airpocalypse", even as authorities downgraded its smog alert from red to orange.
The 12sec video, posted by YouTube user Chas Pope on the video platform on Monday (Jan 2), shows blue sky turning white and eventually smoky grey as smog invades a part of the city.
The Briton working in China said on his Twitter and Instagram accounts that the smog rolled in within 20 minutes.
Mr Pope said the air quality index was above 400 when the video was taken, The New York Times reported on Tuesday (Jan 3).
This is definitely harmless.

Let's not forget that just recently Madrid and Paris had to limit cars in the city because of the smog. It's not limited to China.
Remember when they had their big military celebration and they took the time and effort to enforce strict regulations on vehicles and factory output to avoid this airpocalypse for a week or so?

Really wish they'd do more of that

the scale and frequency of beijing's raw polluted smog is another story though, surely you've seen a ton of this stuff in the past.

not to pass off smog problems in other cities, it's great that some are taking precautions and enforcing regulations to combat it at the stage they are, but what beijing is facing and barely (if at all) acting on in good faith is nothing short of biblical proportions

with that scale of speed-up it looks like this

That's some Bladerunner shit.

But in China it is the absolutely worst.

Let's not forget when China literally shut down all factories in the area for over a year to reduce smog before the olympics and the olympics were still almost cancelled because of the smog. Yeah Paris is a filthy, smelly shithole but come on, limiting cars vs. literal walls of smog that even shutting down factories for a few months doesn't dent is a really disingenuous argument.
That said, China is making a lot of leaps in the right direction environmentally wise. A lot of it comes to their tourists that go to places with very good environments and want to bring that idea back to China, it's slowly becoming a major issue to the government. Unlike here in the US. Maybe we should ship all Republicans to Bejing for a month and then ask them if they want to reduce EPA's power still.
But in China it is the absolutely worst.
For now, anyway. Last I heard, they've promised to make some huge changes in accordance with the Paris climate agreement. Meanwhile, America is the second largest producer of pollutants on the planet, and we're set to deregulate almost every environmental protection policy in the book, according to the incoming administration. Those pictures could well be any major US city within the relatively near future, assuming these promises/threats aren't just piss in the wind.

Morgan Plaza, I remember being at that hotels grand opening for the 2008 Olympics they had Coke advertise on those big screens, it really was like I'd stepped into Bladerunner.
To give you some perspective in the severity of China's smog problem. I live on the island of Kyushu and smog from the Shanghai area is so bad at times when the air currents are just right they blow all that smog here over 500km away and completely suffocates a lot of coastal cities.
It's pretty sad when the AQI of your city is just as closely watched and important as the actual weather.

It's times like these when we need to start working on atmospheric converters. Some sort of electrostatic field generator to funnel the fog into a condenser.
Apparently such a thing was proposed as early as October of 2013.

This was off the chart on the Air Quality Index (400): http://www.air.dnr.state.ga.us/information/aqi.html
Googling Paris smog brings up 185 as a highball.

It's funny because 185 is BAD but only by OUR standards.
Let's take a look at the current AQIs of China (Shanghai area):

693 makes me think people have to dress up in a full HAZMAT suit to go outside so their lungs don't melt.
Holy shit and I thought 400 was high
