That's hardly any details at all
they told us what we WON'T get
What? I want it to be a pure zombie survival game. If it's just gonna be toward the very, very end of the game that I become an one man army then that's somewhat ok.
Every time the man in the video talks I think he is going to curse.
I'll become a killing machine in the endgame? Have I been living under a rock or is this going to feature RPG-esque character development?
Maybe becoming a zombie killing machine will actually be a good thing for the game.
If it's not too much like Dead Rising at least.
Really looking forward to this game.
I just really hope it's moddable. It's okay if it's not, though. I'm not expecting them to release tools.
combining weapons to make exotic and unusual melee weapons.
This just sounds like Dead rising 2.
Which was fun as hell, but dead rising never really took itself seriously. It pretended to, but it knew damn well that you were wearing a pink tutu the entire game and probably spent most of the time in the cutscenes laughing at how everyone just ignored that fact.
"The game is, if you can use such a word for a zombie game, realistic" "The weapon modifications...they are not...wacky"
REALLY? YOU JUST SAID YOU COULD MAKE AN ELECTRIC MACHETE. In what fucking universe is an "electric machete" not wacky and/or a realistic weapon?
God, and they want you to take the story seriously. Sorry but you just can't have a serious zombie game without firearms being prevalent. Melee weapons in a modern setting are simply silly, and this fact is made infinitely worse by the presence of silly weapon combinations. Fucking electric machete. Give me a break.

Firearms and ammunition being rare/scarce in my opinion is a good thing if done just right. I plan on avoiding zombies in my playthrough whenever possible, and will save any guns and ammo I find for big/dangerous zombies. They want the zombies to be threatening and if you find an M16 with 20 clips of ammo every 30 minutes it'd take that away. (I'm exaggerating of course, but just trying to get their point across.)
I completely agree with you though that the crafting seems over-the-top just like it was in Dead Rising 2, and I did raise an eyebrow when he claimed that no crafts will be wacky. I hope that machete is one of the only few "wacky" ones. I plan to avoid all things like that in my game. I'm gonna give the devs the benefit of the doubt and assume that most crafts won't be ridiculous for now.
Also, here's an article from yesterday covering some more Dead Island stuff incase anyone here has missed it. http://gdc.gamespot.com/story.html?sid=6301600&tag=topslot%3Bthumb%3B2&page=1

I don't like the teamwork concept in this game. I want to be forever alone while fighting zombies with occasional survivor encounters.

Then just stick with SP. I'll be doing the same.
I just hope they also have random survivor encounters, it'll be pretty lonely otherwise as you said.

Oh I agree completely that it should be a scarce resource. My point is that it shouldn't lead to melee weapons being the primary form of defense. It winds up decreasing tension because virtually anything can be picked up and made into a weapon.
If firearms are your only serious form of defense, then you truly have to be careful with your ammunition.
Firearms, if done properly, are MUCH better at building a zombie story than this shit. You have to worry about ammunition consumption, maintaining your distance, and the noise itself from discharging the firearm. It allows the zombie vs human dynamic to properly shine. The zombies being a faceless shambling horde vs human intelligence and dexterity.
The act of combining stuff to make a weapon is right on the money. It is an excellent way for human ingenuity to conquer zombie numbers. The problem is that it shouldn't be melee weapons. It would be traps more than anything. Shotgunshell and a propane tank for an IED.
These liomitations better not ruin my experience
Going to be fun.
I just want to save that fucking family.
I wonder if the sountrack will be released seperatly :v:

they're already dead

Yeah, I see your point, call me an optimist but I personally think that Dead Island will pull it off really well lightning-machete aside.
Also, on the topic of traps, I would love to be able to craft a bear-trap type of thing. Would be hilarious having a sprinter clamp into one then just keel over and crawl from that point onwards.
I've always thought it'd be nice if there was a zombie game where the zombies were incredibly tough, and fighting was really only a last ditch effort to survive.
At 04:04 in the video.
... Because we have to use fleshlights.

Firearms are great for your run and gun zombie games, but since this is a sandbox RPG zombie game they don't make any sense. You'd have to include either incredibly large but well spaced out ammo dumps, which would completely ruin the idea of conserving ammo, or lots of small, frequent, respawning ammo caches that would be of constant focus for your group and nothing would get done. By focusing on melee weapons, you give players the freedom to not only choose from a much wider variety of weapons than you would with firearms, but also what they do and when they do it.
They also say it’s unlikely that the game will feature child zombies
pussies
every developer is afraid of putting killable children in their game because parents will whine about it but who honestly cares, they're zombies, the entire situation in which you are killing children to defend your own life is impossible in the first place

Not only that, but it's a fucking video game. I can understand not putting an interactive rape scene or something, but it's a GAME. It's not real. How is slaughtering virtual adults that much better than kids?
Also, disappointment incoming:
The setting is goofy, the voice acting is subpar and many of the concepts seem to have been borrowed from past games
A pretty CGI trailer to hype your game has never been a very good idea. Often ends in disappointment.
I've yet to see a game combine zombies with the atmosphere of isolation and survival like you have in STALKER (which has the advantage of having an actual hostile environment and mysteries).
