For the second time in three days, the Hollywood area - and the world - has lost one of the greats. Irvin Kershner, best known for directing the second Star Wars Film "The Empire Strikes Back", died Saturday 11.27.10 after a three year battle with lung cancer. Although most mourners will think of Star Wars, I am a major James Bond fan, some will forget that he was also at the helm of 1983's "Never Say Never Again", the Bond picture where Sean Connery made his return to the film franchise. My first exposure to Irvin was as a little kid in 1967, where at 11 years old I saw the great con - man comedy - set in the southeast - "The Flim Flam Man." Ironically, I did not give the second Star Wars film good reviews when it first came out in 1980. It is still my least favorite. But according to Star Wars fans and critics, it is now considered to be the best in the series. The film, that had a production budget of about $22 million dollars, has now grossed over $500M worldwide. Here is another tip: Please rent another lesser known film he directed, a favorite "scary" film of this film critic: "The Eyes of Laura Mars" - A very good movie. Rest in Peace Irvin, The USC School of Film won't be the same without you...Thanks, Al
http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-523510?ref=feeds%2Foncnn he made the Empire a great movie, RIP.
