• Bigger engine = new transmission?

Hey I just blew my 2.2 ecotec engine in my 2006 Cobalt, and I was looking into getting a 2.4 for it instead of replacing with a 2.2. Would I need a different transmission if I want to go with a 2.4 vs 2.2? [editline]3rd September 2011[/editline] automatic
Common sense for me says no, considering it's the same family, same make, etc. Also, it's probably just a bored out 2.2. [editline]3rd September 2011[/editline] I wouldn't rely on my advice tho :V
Alright that's what I was thinking.. Just didn't want to make a mistake!
Yeah, they all use the same Gen II block, yer good
IIRC general rule of thumb is that you need a more robust tranny if you have a bigger engine. using a big engine on a stock tranny that was designed for a smaller engine will burn your trans out real quick I hear. Now I don't know if its big enough of a difference with the engine you mentioned but someone who is more knowldable will know
problem is, you bought a cobalt.
It's really not going to matter the slightest bit. There's not going to be any significant increase in power to warrant a stronger one.
You ought to be fine. Chevy used the same two transmissions (one auto and the other manual) on all their Cobalts, except the SS supercharged. Of course, this is purely Wikipedia knowledge. I'd still consult someone who knows engine swaps better than I do.
Well, to be honest, if you needed a beefier transmission for moving up .2 liters, then there would be a lot of honda guys with fucked trannies. You don't need a better tranny, not even when moving up to the V6 (unless, of course, it's a different bellhousing). GM's older 2.2/2.0 used the same tranny as the 3.1/2.8, with a different torqu converter. Hell, the transmission out of some four banger RWD setups are the same as the V8 stuff, there was a Saginaw four-speed tranny used in the 2.3 Vega that was the same used in the Z28.
You should be fine, a stock VW Bus tranny can take up to 160~ horsepower. I'm sure Chevy would engineer a transmission that could withstand a small bump in po- Oh wait.
o i wonder how that could have ever happened
