UA students in an evidence-based medicine class are trying to replicate the experimental results their peers from a previous semester found, where having a woman on a man’s lap while he bench pressed allowed him to do more repetitions.
The inspiration behind the original experimental project was a circulating Internet meme that claimed women helped increase testosterone levels in men, which led to the increased repetitions. However, there was no data to back up the claim.
The goal of the former students was to test the validity of the meme, and they found positive results; the goal of the current class is to follow up and test the validity of those results.
“If you can’t reproduce results, you can’t tell if they are true or not,” said Samantha DiBaise, a senior studying molecular and cellular biology, physiology and Spanish, and the leader of the project. “You can’t say anything about it.”
I need a spot -- for science! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

You gotta impress the girls.
BroScience is gonna have fun with this.
There are other variables at play here..
The Stig shirt is bound to inspire a marginal increase of testosterone to the wearer.
For a girl like that hell yes I'd want to be impressive.
Though I wonder if attractiveness factors in. Do guys try harder when a girl they find unattractive is present instead?

They try harder to get her off their lap.
Do these guys understand placebo effect at all?
Do these guys understand placebo effect at all?
It's tough to even talk about the placebo effect when the mind is involved. If the effect is consistent, then it's probably because of a natural adrenaline response when a man is attracted to a woman, similar to when you hear about people lifting way beyond their normal capacity when trying to save a person's life.
What if a man sits on another mans lap?
What if a man sits on another mans lap?
homosexual litmus test
Do these guys understand placebo effect at all?
I assume they try to get around it somehow, for example telling a guy he's in a control group, having him bench with a male spotter, then another day having him bench with a female spotter, not acknowledging the spotter's gender either time.
Do these guys understand placebo effect at all?
Yes, and it doesn't apply. This is psychological, not "oh, he suddenly has more stamina."
Under normal conditions, he feels like stopping earlier, because he feels kind of tired. But add in an attractive spectator, and even though he feels like of tired, he wants to keep pushing himself to impress them.
She's not really sitting on his lap either. More like
Squatting over it.
well it all makes sense to me, whenever your around someone that your mind has registered as a potential mate, then just like every other animal on the planet, we have to impress to win that mate, so that's why we suddenly can push harder, longer etc.

They pump the iron faster to avoid the awkward boner.

a hot chick is sitting on your lap. More like perfectly justified boner
lmao the guy in the picture is repping like, 95 lbs. anyone can rep that for days.
slap on 225 and lets see if having a woman compromise your leg drive helps your reps.
Edit:
upon further inspection those seems to be 10 pound plates, so this guy's repping 65. even worse

So he's not very strong, what's your point?
So he's not very strong, what's your point?
Well if you want this to be an actual conclusive experiment, you'd need an established threshold for the experimentee.
I'm actually suggesting that this guy is using weight that's far less capable of providing a conclusive result because it's not something he'd struggle with, since it's very light weight. If he could do 10 reps of 135 pounds normally at max effort, and a girl sitting on him yields 15 reps, then yes, that'd be more conclusive.
There's also a lot of factors to include considering warming up, food intake for the day, muscle fatigue, sleep, etc.
Isn't it because she's basically making it easier by sitting on them, so they just have to concentrate in benchpressing?
Do these guys understand placebo effect at all?
Let's design a controlled experiment. If you're in the control group, your lap girl secretly has a dick.

There's a number of factors that go into the bench press, but if anything her weight would make it harder in physical terms. In the bench press, you use something called leg drive, which is a subtle shift you exert from your legs/hips that help translate to vertical force in pushing the weight off your chest. If she's sitting on his waist/legs, it would be much more difficult to utilize that drive; you'd also be imbalanced and distracted by a girl sitting on you. (Technically she's not sitting, but if her leg position narrows the guy's, then it would affect it too. Powerlifters basically bench press with their legs spread as wide as an eagle.)
I'd wager it's definitely something to do with testosterone and the desire to impress that makes your body activate it's strength mode.

So maybe they just took this picture with less weight for the article?
A 'established threshold' would obviously be a weight the subject can only perform a very limited number of reps before failure. I think we should leave the specifics of the method to the people who actually know the science.

The article mentions extremely little in regards to the process, so I can only fill in from what I see :v In fact, the article specifically mentions that the experiment wasn't very scientific, and lacked a scale to reproduce by, as well as little data.
I was mostly making fun of the photo and it's ridiculousness.

...You've got my attention.
On topic: I can sort of see this being plausible. I'm sure I'd push myself a little harder if I had someone attractive watching me or sitting on me, or both. And I've managed to push the ear buds out of my ears from pushing SO HARD trying to lift a last rep... Could've used a lap girl then.
I don't see how it's un-plausible at all. When a guy sees someone he considers attractive, his testosterone levels will increase iirc. During strenous exercise this translates to more stamina.
This isn't really scientific, or a study for that matter.
It's not even new. This myth has been floating around training communities for years.
It's not necessarily a placebo, its also something that cannot be replicated consistently. I mean, everybody has their off days, so tracking consistent rep reports with an added variable will yield mixed results from day to day and from person to person.
One thing for sure though is some people have actually found it to be a distraction while others saw it as encouragement.
Now I kinda wish the pizzeria girl helped when I was bench pressing. Maybe now I wouldn't have spaghetti arms.
a man can dream

I never said it was unplausible. I just said the lack of data is rather unsatisfactory for a scientific experiment.
