A 1950s-set drama centered on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as "the Master" whose faith-based organization known as "the Cause" begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter who becomes his right-hand man.
So it's a film that is more or less about the origins of the religion known as Scientology and it's directed by Paul Thomas Anderson which is known for Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood and Magnolia.

I am excited for this film because pretty much every film that Paul Thomas Anderson has ever directed were amazing and unique in their own ways.
Also, the cast looks pretty great and I think it's pretty intriguing that he's making a film inspired by Scientology.
Also, Jonny Greenwood the lead guitarist of Radiohead is back to do the soundtrack for this film.
This sounds awesome. Jonny Greenwood did a great job with There Will Be Blood's score.

Also, Joaquin Phoenix is making a comeback?
Yes, this is Joaquin's Phoenix comeback film.
Joaquin Phoenix will be amazing...and we haven't even seen Philip Seymour Hoffman footage yet. Paul Thomas Anderson is phenomenal at directing actors. See Punch-Drunk Love or There Will Be Blood for the most prominent examples.
The Master is my most anticipated upcoming film.
Apparently PT screened it for Tom Cruise and some high ranking Scientologists, they did not like it, sounds awesome.

Confirmed amazing film.

that's funny and all, but really, who had the idea "We should play this for exclusively religious nutjobs"
either some misled promotions dude, or a guy with my kind of humor i guess

ohhh nvm, missed that little section in the OP. kick ass
Joaquin Phoenix is just amazing.
something about that trailer makes it so damn interesting, probably Joaquins acting.
something about that trailer makes it so damn interesting, probably Joaquins acting.
it's the acting and the mystery behind his bizarre dialogue and the juxtaposition of the dialogue with his weird actions, like drinking rocket fuel with him and his bros.
the teaser is sort of a showcase for the acting
I like how it doesn't really give the plot away too, it just makes me more interested to see more of it.
I laughed when I saw Mary Sue as one of the characters.

She clearly won't have any flaws!

New trailer.
It's fun to see some footage with Phillip Seymour Hoffman!
Looks like an incredible film. Lancaster seems really arrogant, and Joaquin will be brilliant.
I don't understand what makes it look so amazing, it looks alright to me but nothing special.

amazing actors, amazing director, amazing guy on soundtrack, amazing sense of atmosphere. I mean that's just what I feel from watching the trailers personally, I don't know about anyone else
I always get Wes Anderson, Paul W. S. Anderson, and Paul Thomas Anderson mixed up.

Two Andersons are actually good at the other one is Paul W. S. Anderson.

I'm not sure where I am know the people I know would appreciate this, however myself I'm ecstatic.
Lets not get carried away, this could be total shit but I'm betting from the names attached, at the worst it will be reasonable. Hype is a film killer.

It's Paul Thomas Anderson.
It's Paul Thomas Anderson.
You mean the PTA thats not released a film in 5 years? This should be good but the posts above read like opinions from people who have already seen the film and proclaimed its genius.
Lets hope his 5 year break has not left his edge blunt. It didn't for Kubrick but he wasn't your average director.

PTA isn't really your average director either, but the posts just say that they're excited for it.
Besides I'm pretty certain it won't be total shit, he has a pretty good list of films so far.
Been hyped since the first trailer. Hoffman has me more interested than Phoenix but I don't think either of them will disappoint in the slightest, anticipate this might be one of my favourite films of the year. Also that god damn poster is genius.

it looks like a movie intended for a mature audience then kiddies, I'm hyped on a movie which hasn't been around like that in a while. Everything else I'll relax can appreciate for what it will be.
