Steven Seagal, Sheriff Raid Valley Home In Tank POSTED: 11:07 pm MST March 21, 2011 UPDATED: 1:18 pm MST March 22, 2011 PHOENIX -- Sheriff Joe Arpaio rolled out the tanks to take down a man suspected of cockfighting. West Valley residents in the neighborhood are crying foul after armored vehicles, including a tank, rolled into their neighborhood to make the bust. * VIDEO: Steven Seagal, Sheriff Raid Valley Home In Tank Neighbor Debra Ross was so worried she called 911 and went outside where a nearby home had its windows blown out, was crawling with dozens of SWAT members in full gear, armored vehicles and a bomb robot. “When the tank came in and pushed the wall over and you see what's in there, and all it is, is a bunch of chickens,” Ross said. In a massive show of force on Monday, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant and arrested the homeowner, Jesus Llovera, on charges of suspected cockfighting. Llovera was alone in the house at the time of the arrest, and he was unarmed. “I think taxpayers should be shocked,” said Robert Campus, Llovera’s attorney. Campus said he believes the operation costs tens of thousands of dollars. Deputies had no probable cause to believe Llovera was armed or dangerous, according to Campus. Campus said he believes the entire scene was basically a stage, to help actor Steven Seagal’s TV show, “Lawman.” Seagal was riding in the tank. The Sheriff’s Department has entered into a contract with Seagal and part of that contract gives Seagal carte blanche to go along with the sheriff as he arrests people. Thousands of dollars in damages were made to the property and 115 birds were euthanized on the spot. Llovera was convicted of a misdemeanor last year of attending a cockfight and has no history of owning weapons. Yet the sheriff’s office said they had reasons to believe Llovera might be armed. “We're going to err on the side of caution. We're going to make sure that we have the appropriate amount of force in case we do run into anything like that,” said Sgt. Jesse Spurgin.
http://www.kpho.com/news/27272012/detail.html In any rational, just universe, this man would have already been fired from his job and likely put in jail himself for gross abuse of power and resources. In this universe, it's a tv show. :sigh:
Talk about shock and awe
Absolutely retarded
if it didn't cost so much it would be badass
I really doubt they have a tank. It is very likely just an armored vehicle. Windows get blown out when you throw flashbangs into a building. This is how SWAT serves high risk arrest warrants in virtually every county across the country. If they have reason to suspect that there will be a problem, then they go in with overwhelming force.

Thats like bringing a howitzer with you when you do traffic duty.
Steven Seagal is pretty epic.
The only reason this is even getting any attention is because of Steven Seagal honestly.

They did more than break windows, though. And I really wouldn't call some guy cockfighting with no prior history of owning weapons a "high risk warrant" which justifies causing thousands of dollars in damage. e: Also it obviously wasn't that high risk if they brought Seagal along.

I'm just pointing out that this wasn't anything unusual. Windows being blown out and walls being knocked over is just what happens when they serve high risk warrants. The news is making it out like they did something unusual when the team itself was just following standard operating procedure for serving arrest warrants to potentially dangerous suspects. That overwhelming force makes even the most determined of suspects think twice about fighting back. Despite seeming violent, it is about saving lives more than anything.
Hahah i bet the guy was scared shitless when the tank rolled into his house. But to be honest this is what finnish police does on suspects having gun and hiding in a house, they just get a mechanized squad there too. Armed with military apc and assault rifles.

Also, apparently they did actually have a tank and not just armored vehicles:
West Valley residents in the neighborhood are crying foul after armored vehicles, including a tank, rolled into their neighborhood to make the bust. If Segal didn't ride with them nobody would care that they're "wasting" tax payer dollars
Awesome. Wish they had toys like that in my hometown, all the cops there had were a few police cruisers and a couple of high-powered rifles. :v:
Fair enough, the problem here is just the situation it was used in, like I said. Also, apparently they did actually have a tank and not just armored vehicles:
I doubt it was a full on tank with turrets and caterpillar treads, it was probably just an armored vehicle and people who have no military knowledge say "HURR ARMOR MUST BE ONE A DEM TANKS THEY USED IN THE IRAQ" Also, just saying, I live pretty close to where this happened, the people that live there are pretty stupid

And actually I just realized, what even counts as a high risk warrant? I'm pretty sure cops don't go in with SWAT and APCs everytime a suspect might have a gun.
Fair enough, the problem here is just the situation it was used in, like I said. http://www.flickr.com/groups/404166@N23/pool/page14/ This is what SWAT teams use when they need to breach a building. You can see that they come from a huge variety of counties. They wouldn't use a tank. Tanks damage roads, are expensive and difficult to maintain, and aren't fast enough. You want a wheeled vehicle capable of reaching highway speeds. Dynamic entry is all about speed and surprise. You are going to know a tank is coming.
This is like bringing an Apache helicopter just to take down a pickpocket
Neighbor Debra Ross was so worried she called 911 and went outside where a nearby home had its windows blown out, was crawling with dozens of SWAT members in full gear, armored vehicles and a bomb robot.
She called the Cops on SWAT? :raise:
Plus a large battering ram is always use to knock down doors when the occupant refuse to open. I feel this is kind of overkill

In lieu of this, law enforcement would rather go in with everything they got, instead of potentially not having the proper equipment.

It's unlikely/unreasonable, yeah, but it is Sheriff Joe, you know.

The armored vehicle is only used when they need to breach the building. Most of the time the armored vehicle is actually used in reverse. They run up to the front door/window and use a hook with a cable attached to the armored vehicle to tear the bars off of the window/door so they can use the battering ram to get through the inner door. SWAT teams are usually comprised of two major units. One unit scouts the target building and gathers intelligence while the other team is responsible for tactical entry. The scouts are on scene in plain clothes long before the entry team arrives. The scout team's intelligence determines the nature of the response. Because:
That’s when the tank rolled in, or, as the Maricopa county sheriff’s office website describes it: “a self propelled ‘Howitzer’ emblazoned with anti-drug messages and a new tool to educate our children of the dangers of drug abuse.”
I fuckin told you it's Sheriff Joe. http://www.mcso.org/index.php?a=GetModule&mn=Crime_Prevention&p=tank That's a little more than an APC.
No, the star isn't close to reputable "Sheriff Arpaio takes his war on drugs to the streets with our new "Tank". Well, actually it's a self propelled "Howitzer"" A Howitzer isn't a tank.
A self propelled howitzer isn't a tank. Furthermore that has to be false. The only self propelled artillery that we have used in the past century with the necessary armor plating to serve as an armored vehicle (The roof has to be enclosed entirely due to falling debris when ramming a building) would be the M109 howitzer. It weighs 30 tons and wouldn't fit on most streets where you are going to be serving warrants. So no, that isn't more reputable. EDIT: Oh wait the M108 would also work. The M108 was relatively short lived, I doubt many still even exist from the US inventory.

But on the website they DO say they have a self propelled howizter. But from how they describe it, its just a display piece. They probably used a Condor or similar APC for this raid, which is also pictured on their homepage. [editline]25th March 2011[/editline] It would be fucking hilarious to see a SWAT team breaching a building with a Paladin though :v:

I wonder if he has any shells for it :v:
