still argue that '06 was on the same level as SA1 and 2
still argue that '06 was on the same level as SA1 and 2
SA1 and 2 don't have load times that take years, or levels that are nearly an hour long, or an entire story mode based around a character who's main mechanic, telekinesis, that never works properly once in the entire game. ... or nearly impossible bosses you have to exploit glitches to beat, or have visuals that, at the time, looked like they were pre-alpha, or had you replay the same levels (Which, again, are like an hour long each) three times, or had things like vehicles or environmental physics that would look bad if they were in a fan game. Don't get me wrong, SA1 and 2 are all sort of jank, but at least they were competent, content rich and actually fun jank, even just playing 06 is a nightmare because nothing works, the running is broken, the puzzles are nearly impossible, the levels feel taped together and the engine constantly dies while you play the game.

I own SA1 and I've played it for several hours trying to enjoy it, but it's an awkward, clunky, badly made game to me. I've never played '06, but to me it looks like SA1 with better graphics.
Jesus I remember buying this game when it came out as a kid and being in full denial mode about how bad it was because it was the first game I ever bought for Xbox. Fucking hell, that was ten years ago!?
I played through Sonic Adventure 1 within the last year and I can understand where people are coming from when they say it's not polished and is quite broken, but it does not compare to '06 at all. It's not even the same ballpark. If we were to measure the stability in gameplay between SA1 and '06, I'd probably estimate SA1 being at 75% and '06 being at 15%. Almost every single thing you have to do in '06 is just not functional.

It's funny because Sonic '06 was meant to be sort of a soft reboot, just leave all the extra baggage behind and go on with a whole new generation of Sonic. Then the game pissed off everyone, despite making it onto Xbox platinum hits through sheer sales alone, and now ten years later SEGA really plays up the old-school classic factors of Sonic and are partly scared of the fanbase's potential reactions to new things.
they don't listen to the fanbase in general. see: post sonic generations
Lost World is mostly a case of them not wanting to play things too safe all the time, it's why games like Sonic Heroes exists. And part of the experimental concept shit is why Sonic 3D Blast existed, too. But you can't deny that they are at least somewhat listening to the fanbase - just to extremes, hence why all of Sonic's friends are nothing more than cutscene roles and it's just been Sonic with gimmicks ontop to still keep their variety of gameplay. Because they're too afraid to just have raw Sonic platforming and probably get a short game for all the budget they put into this shit, but the fanbase wouldn't shut up around '06 about "TOO MANY FRIENDS." Which is hilarious because now people are much more accepting of Cream, Blaze, and other certain friends, and they really wouldn't mind the return of playable Tails or Knuckles. Even the whole Modern / Classic Sonic thing in Generations was a gimmick alongside the challenges to pad the game out, but that was far more acceptable at least.
Hey, this guy is actually pretty good

It's basically the equivalent to trying to plug the holes of a broken cup with your hand and hoping to keep all the water in. I've found that I've accidentally run off of things because of SA's terrible camera and floaty controls, and I have encountered some of my own glitches on my own. It's not the worst and it has its own charm, and I would consider it a classic but not a classic completely based on it's gameplay. It's a decent game at a cool turn of gaming history and it means a lot because of the historical context.

I love the subtle humor of how he passed off the flaws as good things, instead of going the generic route and just using over the top exaggerated anger.
SA1 had decent controls and I'd say half of the given gameplay styles were at the least "fun". For an intro to 3d Sonic did an amazing job at combining high speed gameplay and platforming, even though 2-3 game modes weren't very fun and one was straight trash and the game just had no idea what the fuck voice actors were. SA2 had the pinnacle of what Sonic should be in the 3d plane and even rivaled other games for platforming mastery. Problem was it was bogged down by 2 awful gameplay styles and a plot that just sort of sucked. Nothing was good about Sonic 06 though. All 3 gameplay styles they introduced sucked. The story was OFFENSIVELY bad. Doctor Eggman looked awful. The worst part about Sonic 06 was it made critical flaws that not only were poor choices but were straight up textbook definitions on how not to make a game. Boss battles that broke laws of boss design such as "don't make the boss take longer than it has to", "Make sure the boss's attacks are avoidable and make all damage the player takes be based on their mistakes and not unfair bullshit", and "Make the boss's vulnerability apparent." Not to mention that gameplay just screams "physics engine tech demo" because of all the pointless use of physics, such as all of Silver's gameplay and that fucking atrocious ball puzzle, the fact that every enemy falls apart into a load of styrofoam bits that float about, and the unnecessary world objects that are put there simply to crumble or fall and create unfair obsticles. SA1 and 2 might not have aged well or at worst be overall mediocre games, but Sonic 06 is bad to such a degree that it can be referred to on how NOT to design a game in every single aspect. I think that fact is why we love shitting on it even a decade later.
