Critque my weird guitar effect (accoustic/rock/wtf)
9 replies, posted
Okay so I wrote this short piece out, generic chord progression, harmony distortion guitar riff, and then some weird octaving effects and improv soloing. Most of it was one take since I already had the basics written out. Would have posted in the WIP megathread but I want some specific critiques without clogging up a different thread.
Effect in question comes in around 0:30

Things I'm aware of:
Bad levels, don't have access to my computer with Audition so I used audacity, thus I couldn't really tweak anything very well.
Too much treble on the octaving, not sure if I like.
Bass is weird, still don't have a real bass so hopefully it adds more than it subtracts.
Things I'd like to know:
A: Does the octaving thing kill it? I want to smooth it out and take away some distortion but do you see any potential? I'm mostly worried about the first riff, after a few measures I got distracted and started fiddling but just a general perspective.
B: Is the tone on the guitars good? I want it to be a little "tin-ish" and gritty but just about any advice is good advice.
C: Should I make the acoustic guitar sharper, it's a little low I thinks.
D: Overall was it ear-rape or decent, meh?
I don't own a guitar so bear with me. I really like this, and the gliding high pitched effect is not ear rape at all. Reminds me of a simple electronic synth but then transitions into the regular distorted guitar sound. I'd say it works very well with the overall sound of the track. The bass isn't bad but it could definitely be better, but if you don't own an actual bass you're better off leaving it in rather than going without.
I wouldn't change a lot when it comes to the sound of the guitars themselves as they sound very well at the moment (This is of course up to you), but I would slightly pan the guitars to the left and right to seperate them a bit and I would make the distorted guitar slightly louder than it is right now (you're probably aware of this), but it should stay quieter or at the same level as the acoustic guitar as to not dominate the sound. Experiment a bit.
Haha, I was thinking this would be buried in the internet forever :p
Anyways, I'm glad you like it, and I definitely plan on experimenting. I'd forgotten about panning, but I'll definitely remember that for next time, panning couldn't hurt I think. Good to hear some positive feedback so I know I'm heading in the right direction, thanks.
It's great, add a drum track to it, then it'd be fucking awesome
If you could, would you please just record the effect on it's own? it sounds really cool.

I may get a chance today, otherwise it'll take a while, but yeah, I can try, and thanks guys :D
The very beginning of the weird effect is a bit too extreme, but otherwise it's really nice! :buddy:

I agree with that haha, I showed it to my mom yesterday and we both started laughing when it got to it :\ I'm working on it though I swear I swear guise
Are you using a Whammy pedal or something similar? Or are you creating the effect in post-processing?

Yeah, I'm using my expression petal, 0% is normal and 100% is 8va, which is kind of lame because if you don't have it all the way then you're just out of key, but it's good for longer notes. I also have a bit of wah on the guitar as default but the amount is fixed.
