Members of a gun-rights group think they have the answer to combating crime — free shotguns and ammo to homeowners. Members of the Armed Citizen Project of Florida have been dropping leaflets on doorsteps in the Sunshine Gardens community near Orlando, Fla., offering to “arm volunteer households,” for free. “This is perfectly legal because what we’re doing is we’re offering first of all a certified gun-instruction class, but we’re not handing out the shotguns whatsoever.” the ACP state director Ron Ritter told local NBC affiliate WESH. Ritter said a firearms retailer would supply the shotguns and ammunition and transfer ownership once the volunteer passes a background check.
http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/09/25/20695185-group-offers-free-shotguns-to-fight-crime-in-florida-suburb?lite
fucking stupid
Well at least they do a background check and give them an instruction class.
Kind of crazy but hey, I wouldn't mind a free gun either if it were me in that neighborhood. Plus they're doing the right thing by doing background checks and instructional classes, this is the proper way to deal with firearms, not rampant banning of anything with a trigger.
fucking stupid
Bit of a sensationalist title. Has them go through classes and they're only giving it to volunteers who take the classes and a background check.
I actually live in Florida near the Orlando area, so this is close by to me. I wonder if this thing is going to spread...
Free gun? Background check required to receive hardware? Free supply of ammo? I'm game.
Sorry about the title :v:
fucking stupid
lol why? They're giving people proper training to use the firearm and making them pass a background check before the firearm is transferred too them. They're not showing up people's doorsteps, giving them doorsteps, and encouraging vigilantism.
If any criminals in Orlando are reading this article, then they'll know not to fuck with that neighborhood.
slightly disconcerting, but free stuff is nice I guess
If any criminals in Orlando are reading this article, then they'll know not to fuck with that neighborhood.
There are some people who think doing this will turn the neighbors into criminals when they otherwise wouldn't have been And there are also those who think this is a bad idea because the criminals would get hurt trying to fuck with them
reminds me of the neighborhood watch from that snitching episode of The Boondocks :v:
fucking stupid
Stupid? More like free shotguns.
There are some people who think doing this will turn the neighbors into criminals when they otherwise wouldn't have been And there are also those who think this is a bad idea because the criminals would get hurt trying to fuck with them
Both of those ideas are fucking stupid. Giving a person a firearm doesn't suddenly turn them into a potential criminal; no more so than a person being given a car increases their chances to perform hit and runs. And if someone breaks into a home, they should know full well the possible consequences include being shot.

Wish they did this where I live.
I'm guessing that the loudness of gun could scare the intruders.
I'm guessing that the loudness of gun could scare of intruders.
The threat is often times enough to scare them off. I don't have the stats on hand, but if you broke into someone's house and they poked around the corner with a coach gun pointed at you, do you think they'd need to fire a warning shot for you to shit yourself? The presence is pretty damn intimidating. Well, that, and warning shots aren't legal most places because of collateral damage.
Guns should be used for hunting and practice shooting, not "fighting crime." Title is pretty misleading though. They should give them guns and say "Hey don't use it unless you absolutely need to." Article makes it sound like they are encouraging people to shoot over crime not self defense.

Its good logic. A criminal wouldn't want to be in an area where everybody is armed.
I don't exactly like guns very much but the fact that they are actually putting up courses and shit makes this okay in my book.
This should be happening all over the country. The only people that are getting hurt by gun laws are law abiding citizens. Its simple logic. Criminals don't give a shit if there is some law stating that guns are illegal because that just means they will have easier targets and are less likely to get shot/killed. When it comes to the gun debate the only person that shouldnt be aloud to have any weapons are loons like Aaron Alexis, Adam Lanza, That orange haired dude it just goes to show how much bigger the mental health issue is than gun control because normal people wont go on shooting rampages.
Its good logic. A criminal wouldn't want to be in an area where everybody is armed.
This isn't exactly true. A lot of criminals like to target locations where they can get guns from so they cannot be traced in future crimes.
fucking stupid
No not really. If you was going to rob/ hurt somebody are you going to the guy with a shotgun or a unarmed dude? Besides they gotten background checks and took classes. They seem responsible enough to handle a shotgun that they will most likely never shoot anybody with.
Training is the only way you will know what to do with a firearm if you encounter it by chance. Claiming this is stupid isn't close to sane. However, all of these should require a safe of a secure location in the home to prevent theft. News like this is generally bait, but then again, these people do have shotguns now.

It's always guns and videogames that get targeted like this. I don't see anybody going crazy about baseball bats if one is used in a murder. Ofcourse their should be some laws to prevent mentally ill folks getting guns and some background checks too.

I mean, that way I'm up one shotgun that can't be traced to me, and that gives me more of an advantage over the unarmed and other armed dudes.
Well at least they do a background check and give them an instruction class.
A mandatory instructional class to purchase firearms(or any weapon) should be in place imo, would prevent unnecessary deaths.
