[release] THE shooting death of a 15-year-old Amish girl driving a horse-drawn buggy was caused by a man who accidentally shot his rifle into the air while cleaning it 2km away, US police say. Rachel Yoder was shot in the head on Thursday night while travelling to her home in Fredericksburg, Ohio. She had attended a Christmas party for employees at an Amish produce farm and was riding home alone when she was shot, police Captain Douglas Hunter said on Tuesday.Holmes County Sheriff Timothy Zimmerly said the gun-cleaner's family came forward and his neighbours reported hearing a shot about the time the girl was wounded. The man had fired the muzzle-loading rifle in the air 2km from where Yoder was shot, Zimmerly said.State investigators were checking the rifle for a ballistics match, he said."In all probability, it looks like an accidental shooting," Zimmerly said. No charges have been filed. The horse continued to cart the girl after she was shot, and she fell out of the buggy near her home. Her brother found her after he saw the horse walking in circles and went to check it.Authorities initially believed she had fallen out of the buggy and hit her head until a hospital test revealed the gunshot wound.Hunter said his department traced a trail of blood along the road in an area of farms and rolling hills.AP [/release] http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/amish-girl-shot-accidently-from-2km/story-e6frg6so-1226227504005 Wow, that's fucking rare
Holy fuck how does that even happen
Poor gun safety kills again.
...what? No seriously, how does this happen?
Unfortunate that it happened. I bet the guy who accidentally shot the rifle is probably miserable that he did it. Take this as a word of warning, make sure your gun is always unloaded before cleaning it. This happens every-so often which bothers me the most. This shouldn't happen at all.
One in a million chance probably.
What goes up, must come down. Very sad.
How in the what? The fuck kind of mistake is not checking if your rifle is unloaded whilst you're cleaning it.
Wouldn't this be a mile confirmed kill? He almost broke the fucking record.
Freeaaakkk accident
...what? No seriously, how does this happen?
He left his gun loaded and evidently either it was a Remington or the safety was off so it fired while he was cleaning it. It must've been at an angle where the bullet could come down lethally.
This happened a few years ago as well during I think New Years, someone shot their gun up in the air and the bullet landed in a church hitting a kid. though that time it wasn't an accident while cleaning, the guy was just shooting the gun in celebration or some dumb shit.
Well I guess she's shot out of luck.
accidental? more like trick shot
Shooting a bullet in the air is a felony. This guy is lucky that he wasn't charged, even though it was accidental. There was a death like this on 1000 Ways to Die. Except the person who died wasn't Amish or anything. And I think the person who shot the gun was like 5 miles away actually.
Reminds me of all the people you see on TV shooting their weapons into the air in celebration. And then they wonder why people just drop dead to random bullets.
He left his gun loaded and evidently either it was a Remington or the safety was off so it fired while he was cleaning it. It must've been at an angle where the bullet could come down lethally.
It was a black powder muzzle loader.
What kind of moron doesn't unload/discharge a weapon before cleaning it? It's basic common sense.
What kind of moron doesn't unload/discharge a weapon before cleaning it? It's basic common sense.
it's an easy thing to forget if you regularly clean your rifle
You can do ballistics matching on muzzle loaders? I didn't realize they had rifling inside the barrels. 2km? Damn, that's a long arcing shot. Of course that's an accident, are they trying to say this guy scored a head shot at 1 1/4 miles with a muzzle loader on a MOVING target intentionally? What, did Lee Harvey Oswald have a long lost son no one knew about till now?
You can do ballistics matching on muzzle loaders? I didn't realize they had rifling inside the barrels.
only early muzzle loaders didn't have rifling, iirc. still pretty amazing how they can match ballistics with muzzle loaders though. but this raises the question...why the hell was the muzzle loader loaded when the guy was cleaning it? doesn't make any sense.
Nah dawg it was a super hard arma 2 mission where the assassin had to fire under the thunder, but instead of thunder it was another gun's shot.
Jesus, I happen to own a weapon like that. The rounds are basically 12 gauge slugs traveling at 2200 fps.
He left his gun loaded and evidently either it was a Remington or the safety was off so it fired while he was cleaning it. It must've been at an angle where the bullet could come down lethally.
It was a muzzle loader, clearly says so in OP.
Wow, that's fucking rare
not really, I got shot through a roof november of last year. Shit happens all the time.
It was a muzzle loader, clearly says so in OP.
Didn't notice that.
."In all probability, it looks like an accidental shooting," Zimmerly said.
Well here I was thinking he planned this out, silly me.
Reminds me of all the people you see on TV shooting their weapons into the air in celebration. And then they wonder why people just drop dead to random bullets.
When people shoot bullets relatively vertical into the air chances are they are going to slow down to a point where they are no longer lethal. The trajectory of this bullet was probably very horizontal.
Poor gun safety kills again.
no, a freak accident kills again. this is roughly as probable as getting hit by a meteor immediately after getting struck by lightning twice.
Surely from that distance it wasn't going fast enough to do serious damage.
