Doctors had to surgically remove a 0.8 inch cockroach from a man's ear after it crawled inside while he was asleep, according to Australian media reports Friday.
Hendrik Helmer told the state-owned Australian Broadcasting Corporation that he had unsuccessfully tried to suck out the insect using his vacuum cleaner.
"I was hoping it wasn't a poisonous spider. I was hoping it didn't bite me," he said.
Having been woken in the early hours of Wednesday morning by an excruciating pain in the side of his head, Helmer convinced his roommate to drive him to the hospital near their home in Darwin, in northern Australia.
The doctor put olive oil into Helmer's ear but that merely drove the cockroach down further. After 10 minutes the creature began to die so the doctor pulled it out with forceps.
Imagine hearing a cockroach die inside your head
Man i'd be fucking traumatized if this were to happen to me but the Aussie is just like "oh shit i hope it's not another spider"
I don't live in Australia, but stories like these, and stories about eating spiders in your sleep or bugs going up your nose, makes me begin to think that putting panty hose over my head while I sleep is not such a bad idea :tinfoil:
Ok yep.
Cringe article of the week.
Must have been a tiny cockroach, ear canal isn't that big or deep

We've got bigger concerns than roaches down here
I'm so grateful that roach won't have another chance to claim another victim of such a heinous crime. I'm glad he's dead.
When I was eight, my psychotic grandfather, who was missing an eye due to cancer, told my brother and me that there was a spider crawling around in his brain. He came up with a twenty minute story about how this fucking spider crawled into his head through his eye hole and was scuttling around in there, laying eggs.
That was traumatic shit man. Especially since he actually thought it.

But it's still a cockroach and it didn't deserve to die!
My grandmother had a roach fly into her ear a while back. They were able to get it out with tweezers though, albeit in pieces.

Weekly at worst, once a season at best I'll wake up with a Huntsman somewhere in my line of sight.
On the upside it means I've never had a cockroach problem :v:
If I knew a cockroach was in my ear I would start screaming and go crazy
When I was a kid a very small cockroach made its way into my ear. I could hear it scuttling about constantly and at one point it either bit me or stuck me with one of the sharp bits on its legs as it hurt like hell. But eventually after enough of thrashing my head about and wailing, it fell out and scurried away. I was surprised at how incredibly tiny it was, when it's all going down you think it's a fucking combi van sized thing jammed in your head.

I hope his family gets the boot, literally.
This is common. If there was a news article of every time this happened then there would be no other news to talk about.
Damn, aussies must have some insane restraint. I would have blowtorched the fucker out, I've got a scortched earth policy with insects.
I can't decide what's worse a horsefly in your ear or a cockroach!

I'd try to shoot it out.

something something something tasers something
In all likelihood, the oil should have worked to drive the cockroach out. The cockroach going in deeper was just unfortunate.
But goddamn, I sure as hell wouldn't want to be in this poor bastard's place.

If that happened to me I'd crack my skull open and fish it out.
What's that? I would die, you say? Nonsense! I am invincible!
finally i can be glad that i have tiny ear canals
