So apparently it's against the law not to wear a helmet while biking?

So here I am with my friends and I, on a beautiful sunny day just getting out of school on a minimum day (we got out at 1:03 or so) -- biking down the street to get some delicious and nutritious McDonalds. As we go down the street, a motorcycle cop drove by me and looked me dead in the eyes with a stone cold look on his face. I instantly knew something was going to go down, so we just kept going hoping for the best. Sure enough, he turned around and pulls up next to me, instructing us to stop and go to the curb. Obviously we comply, not wanting to cause any trouble.
He then goes on with a rant about how we all have to wear a helmet (in the meantime, teens are zooming by left and right without them, making it very apparent this cop doesn't care about our safety, he just wants to give some quick tickets). Apparently biking casually 3 miles per hour down the sidewalk puts us in extreme caution of falling and cracking our skulls. Anyways, he ends up writing us all a ticket, we have to appear to court and pay a fine (Not really sure how much it is, though it probably won't be cheap)
The entire 30 minutes he spent writing those tickets (Taking his damn time like he was writing a speeding ticket, though we were going ~3-4 miles per hour, as if we were rushing and he just wanted to make us late for...nothing) -- he was cracking jokes and poking fun at us. Once finished with the first three tickets, he exclaimed:
"OHP LOOKS LIKE I'M ALL OUT OF TICKETS! :downs:"
We all sighed in relief for the 4th and final person not getting a ticket, and the cop quickly opens his motorcycle, pulls out a new pad, and said:
"OH WAIT DERP HERE'S A NEW PAD :smug:"
Just gotta love those cops who have nothing to do but pick on teens just trying to enjoy their day.

Yay, court date is smack in between Christmas and new years. Should be fun.
Discuss, facepunch!
tl;dr: Friend got hit by a car and cracked his skull, cop gives him ticket for not wearing helmet.
Im sure it is here. Still, heaps of kids do it.
You broke the law.

should have worn a helmet.
You broke the law.
So do people who smoke marijuana. Still, facepunch (and the general population) sympathizes with them.
My point isn't that I didn't break the law, the point is that it's an absurd law. We don't need laws telling us what's safe for us.

You'd be surprised.
They were tossing this idea around for a while in Ohio, and actually passed something where you can get a fine for riding without a helmet if you're below 18, but I've passed several officers without a helmet and they don't do anything about it.
In my opinion, I think it should be completely optional. If the person riding is afraid of getting a head injury, then let them wear a helmet, just don't force the people who don't want helmets to wear them.

No, I wouldn't. I'm well aware of them -- I've just never been at the butt end of it.

there is a difference between smoking weed and not wearing a basic safety device on a busy road.
Should of wore a helmet; Less chance of skull cracking.
Hey dumbass, A helmet is the thing that saves your stupid ass like a seatbelt saves your stupid ass in a car.
If you don't wear one you deserve to have your brains splattered in the pavement because you are too damn stupid, of course the government decided to help you dumbasses along and give you a law to keep it on.

How is it absurd? It is put in place* to stop people dying. Same with speed limits, road rules etc etc
the cop quickly opens his motorcycle
This just sounded funny for some reason.
A ticket for not wearing seatbelts?
Outrageous!

First, calm down. Seriously. Internet tough guy right here.
Next, This isn't comparable to a seat belt. If you get in a head-on collision at 60 mp/h - a seat belt could save your life. A helmet, will not.

Speed limits and road rules save other people's lives too. It prevents accidents which affect more than one person. A helmet won't do that.

it's a basic safety device that will save will life in many forms of accidents not limited to 60 mph impacts. you knew you were in violation of basic safety laws and yet you went ahead and broke them. you deserve the full consequence of your actions.
I haven't worn a helmet since I was 10. Cops never stop me and from what I understand it's only illegal if your not an adult. I may be wrong. But cops still don't bother with me here in Ontario.
And I'm 21 now. So I've gone 11 years without a helmet. I don't even own one.

Fine, when you crack your skull open. Don't come crying to me. :colbert:

I was actually not well aware of the fact that this was a law.
Regardless, I understand a helmet can be beneficial, though I don't find the need when going to and from school. When I do more lengthy or strenuous bike trips, I tend to wear one. There shouldn't be laws enforcing it, it should be personal choice.

I won't. I'll be dead.
I can't wait for you to fall off and die because you are too stubborn to wear protection.

What exactly do you have agaisnt helmets?
You will be sorry once you crash your bike and you wake up from a coma into an abandoned world full of infected humans. Wait no you won't you would still be alive. Never mind don't wear a helmet.
It depends on where you live. And boo hoo, the cop was obviously persecuting you guys. Don't think he's going to be physically able to stop other people riding without helmets while he's writing you guys up. You all were just unlucky. By the way, it's only illegal if it's a motorized bike where I live :smug:

I plan on wearing one once I purchase my road bike. It's too tedious to carry along with me all day simply because I bike to and from school, a 5 minute trip.
Regardless, I intended this to be more of a debate on personal choice rather than the usefulness of a helmet.

you as a citizen legally have a responsibility to know what the laws are. just saying "you didn't know" isn't an excuse. the government and society in general has a vested interest in making sure idiots like you don't go tragically dying because of some ill-contrived reason they shouldn't be wearing a helmet.

I'm well aware that it's not a proper excuse, I find the law a bit nit picky. I'm pretty sure you didn't read up on every single minor infraction you could possibly commit, it's not an obligation nor is it generally necessary.
You're retarded for not knowing it
I've been pulled over twice for not wearing a helmet
FUCK DA POLICE
but op you obviously should have known this, hur dur
I never got a ticket though, said I was 15 :smug:
