Facebook is sorry. The company's Chief Product Officer Chris Cox apologized to the LGBT community in a statement Wednesday for the 'hardship' created by requiring Facebook users to use their legal names. The real-name policy says users must use a name "as it would be listed on your credit card, driver's license or student ID" or their account could be deleted. There was a backlash. A widespread protest campaign was launched, notably from members of the LGBT community, but also from people who feel unsafe using their real names on the Internet. Find out. "I want to apologize to the affected community of drag queens, drag kings, transgender, and extensive community of our friends, neighbors, and members of the LGBT community for the hardship that we've put you through in dealing with your Facebook accounts over the past few weeks," Mr. Cox said, in a Facebook post after the meeting. Boo fucking hoo, it's there just to sift out people like xXjamesXx.
Boo fucking hoo, it's there just to sift out people like xXjamesXx.
People transitioning between genders are in that same boat, yeah?
"I want to apologize to the affected community of drag queens, drag kings, transgender, and extensive community of our friends, neighbors, and members of the LGBT community for the hardship that we've put you through in dealing with your Facebook accounts over the past few weeks,"
Ooooh, Drag Kings. You don't hear that said much.
People transitioning between genders are in that same boat, yeah?
Yeah but it's not like they force you give photo ID or a birth certificate just so they make sure kevin smith is kevin smith.
Yeah but it's not like they force you give photo ID or a birth certificate just so they make sure kevin smith is kevin smith.
They've closed accounts of transgendered people until they've put their "real" name, as provided on a license or such. So yes, they do.
They've closed accounts of transgendered people until they've put their "real" name, as provided on a license or such. So yes, they do.
Haha, that's just ridiculous. Everybody should make an exodus back to Myspace.
Yeah but it's not like they force you give photo ID or a birth certificate just so they make sure kevin smith is kevin smith.
That is literally word for word what they were doing. This is a serious matter that affects the lives of many in the LGBT community and is an indirect (or at least I hope it's indiretct) attack on their persons and their identities.
That is literally word for word what they're doing.
Were, as it appears.
The process we follow has been to ask the flagged accounts to verify they are using real names by submitting some form of ID — gym membership, library card, or piece of mail. We've had this policy for over 10 years,
I hadn't realised Facebook's been in existence for over 10 years. Damn.
I have a feeling if it upset any other community other than the LGBT one Facebook wouldn't care.
They've closed accounts of transgendered people until they've put their "real" name, as provided on a license or such. So yes, they do.
i have not had to suffer this yet.
I have a feeling if it upset any other community other than the LGBT one Facebook wouldn't care.
So many people get sensitive if Homo-Sexual people get upset... So that's why facebook had to clear their name. Get it? "name" Irony
Boo fucking hoo, it's there just to sift out people like xXjamesXx.
Being gay or transgender is literally illegal in some countries. Forcing them to use their real name will enable persecution, hence the backlash against it.
my middle name on Facebook is "A Skeleton" what the heck
Boo fucking hoo, it's there just to sift out people like xXjamesXx.
If I want to go online under the alias "Badass McDix" I have every right to be. I do not need any reasoning behind this choice either, simply wanting to go online as Badass McDix is all that is necessary.
I changed my name on Facebook like a million times to stupid shit, Facebook never rode my ass about it. They must be changing it a lot then.
If I want to go online under the alias "Badass McDix" I have every right to be. I do not need any reasoning behind this choice either, simply wanting to go online as Badass McDix is all that is necessary.
Doesn't mean I should have to put up with that on Facebook
Haha, that's just ridiculous. Everybody should make an exodus back to Myspace.
they have already for the most part moved over to Ello
So many people get sensitive if Homo-Sexual people get upset... So that's why facebook had to clear their name. Get it? "name" Irony
Was that supposed to be some kind of joke? Like as in something that makes people laugh?
I changed my name on Facebook like a million times to stupid shit, Facebook never rode my ass about it. They must be changing it a lot then.
They seem to be really sporadic about it. They disabled my real account for not having a real name despite me using my legal name yet the blatantly fake alternate account I've been using since then is untouched.
they have already for the most part moved over to Ello
Lmao nobody uses ello (and probably never will)
So many people get sensitive if Homo-Sexual people get upset... So that's why facebook had to clear their name. Get it? "name" Irony
I don't even know where to start with this post the misuse of the word "irony"? the awful pun? the blatant disrespect for the LGBT community? jesus
Wait, quick question: If you're going to identify as the other gender with an entirely different name, why wouldn't you get your name legally changed?
I don't even know where to start with this post the misuse of the word "irony"? the awful pun? the blatant disrespect for the LGBT community? jesus
How about simply ignore it and move on instead of taking the bait like he probably wants you to.
Lmao nobody uses ello (and probably never will)
Not true my friends list is through the roof and people are making all sorts of posts -snip- I was going to put a puush here but apparently it doesn't want to work so fuck it you don't get to enjoy the complete satire
Wait, quick question: If you're going to identify as the other gender with an entirely different name, why wouldn't you get your name legally changed?
A lot of people do, but it's a process that requires time and money a lot of people don't have.
Wait, quick question: If you're going to identify as the other gender with an entirely different name, why wouldn't you get your name legally changed?
For some people, the only way they can is online because of discrimination elsewhere.
the scary problem was facebook already knew what your "real" name was and wouldn't accept what you told it as a name
I don't want my real name on the internet, but all facebook can do is "sorry"? They have gone without this policy for years, I think it's pretty awful of them to start requiring all of your personal information.
If you're going to identify as the other gender with an entirely different name, why wouldn't you get your name legally changed?
As far as I understand it: In addition to legal expenses, "trying out" a new name is generally part of the transitional period. It's another way to grow comfortable with the new identity, and it helps people refer to you with the correct pronouns and such.
