Fire crews in California, US, were unable to save the 217mph supercar which was engulfed by flames after overheating. The two men escaped from the flash Aventador motor — thought to be the first one EVER to be written off by fire. Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is one of a string of stars who own one of the luxury wheels, which have a waiting list of up to 18 months. The unlucky US dealer was taking his rich potential buyer for a spin in the posh Newport Beach area when it spontaneously combusted. There have been more than 20 reports of Lamborghini Gallardos catching fire, while Ferrari recalled its 458 Italia in 2010 following a fault which led to the supercar overheating. The 6.5-litre V12 Aventador is powered by a 690bhp engine and can accelerate from 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 217mph. At least they got out OK...damn.
I wonder if he bought a different car from the dealer, maybe something less incendiary...
This is the kinda shit I expect to see in a goddamn Wile E. Coyote cartoon, not in real life!
Who in their right mind pay £250 000 for a fucking car? For that money you can have a custom car built and tuned to outperform those vehicles. I've seen a Toyota Starlet outrun a Ferrari.
because people buy a Lamborghini based purely on performance
If you don't buy a Lamborghini for speed, then why the fuck would you pick a car with nearly 700bhp?

Why the fuck would I want some Toyota if I could afford a Lambo.
I would if I had the money. It's a beautiful car and it carries a historical name. Why the fuck would I want some Toyota if I could afford a Lambo.
Right, so Lamborghinis sales would be unaffected if they had lets say a 3 cylinder 75bhp engine?
If you don't buy a Lamborghini for speed, then why the fuck would you pick a car with nearly 700bhp?
They look waaaaaay better than a shitty starlet, and they're much more rare than one as well. [editline]16th April 2012[/editline]
Right, so Lamborghinis sales would be unaffected if they had lets say a 3 cylinder 75bhp engine?
Are you dumb?
Lambos and ferraris are a waste of money anyway imo. Go ahead and buy one, idc, but even if i had the money, I wouldn't get one.
And this is why Italian cars are best. They have soul, they have personality, and they're exciting even when they're just putzing along!
Lambos and ferraris are a waste of money anyway imo.
Waste of money? That sort of sound and performance? Money well spent 'far as I'm concerned.
Exactly, they sound good, go like rockets and look awesome.
You are completely unaware that those aspects you are describing can be achieved with lesser amounts of money but that's stupid in your opinion right?
You're right, but imo it's not the same thing. A lambo has that feel that you don't get in other cars.
It's almost as if there's something intrinsically wrong with spending vast quantities of money on personal luxuries while the world is filled with poverty and starvation...
There isn't. If I want to buy a nice car, and I have the money, I have every right to buy that nice car. Just because someone ten thousand miles away is starving doesn't mean I shouldn't enjoy the luxuries I bust my ass to acquire.
Who in their right mind pay £250 000 for a fucking car?
Because
For that money you can have a custom car built and tuned to outperform those vehicles.
It's their money. Who are you to tell them what to spend it on? If they want to modify some god-awful Toyota to go fast, let them. If they want to buy a Lamborghini, let them. It's not your money, why do you care? Funnily enough the modified Toyota will be a heap of junk. It will only go fast in a straight line, it won't be reliable, it won't stop for shit, it will sound awful, and it's more likely to go up in a ball of flames than the Aventador that this thread was made about!
I don't think speed is what matters here. Unless you're a racer who uses Lamborghini to race, I don't see where you could max out that speed.
It's not the top speed so much as how it gets there. Getting pinned to the seat, hearing that monster engine literally scream, THAT is what buying a car like this is all about for gearheads that can afford them.
If you don't buy a Lamborghini for speed, then why the fuck would you pick a car with nearly 700bhp?
Badge, prestige, exclusivity, bragging rights. IMO they're the wrong reasons to buy anything, but that's why the majority of these things get sold. I'd hazard a guess that maybe one out of ten supercars ever breaks 110MPH. Most of them probably never even break 85, and there's quite a few that never run at all.
Some people want a to spend the time and money making a production car outrun a supercar. And then some people want a supercar. And then some people's supercars burn to the ground.
I know somewhere Top Gear is having a heart attack.
I know somewhere Top Gear is having a heart attack.
I was going to post that

If you are going to build a car you probably won't use a starlet since there are way better platforms. And if you got your hands on £250 000 to spend, you can shape the body of the car any way you want.

It's their money, let them buy what they want.
Some people want the whole package with a super car. The looks, the speed and the pedigree nature of the brand. It's an exclusive club some people want to be in. There is nothing wrong with modifying a cheaper car for performance and looks too, it's just not what some people want from a car
If you don't buy a Lamborghini for speed, then why the fuck would you pick a car with nearly 700bhp?
There are speed limits you know, it's not like many people would risk damaging their Lamborghini to race. It's just a luxury thing.

I honestly don't buy the concept that just because someone is good at moving money around in the stock market and learning how best to cut jobs and get bonuses in the business they run that they necessarily "earn" or deserve the wealth they accumulate.
There are speed limits you know, it's not like many people would risk damaging their Lamborghini to race. It's just a luxury thing.
You need a car that can go over 200 mph for that future moment where you have to outrun an explosion.
What's your problem with people buying expensive cars? It's their money, let them buy what they want.
He's probably jealous and this is how he puts it out there?
