Alright, my amp has an Overdrive button, but I have not gotten used to screwing around with it. How do I make my Fender Squier Affinity sound like guitars you hear in Metallica or Megadeth, for example?
Probably new pickups and a pedal try getting a pedal first.
Tried scooping the mids a bit on your EQ?
Ok, thanks. I will be building a new guitar so I will see what I can put in it.
The best way (not many people do this) is to raise your pickups really close to your strings. It adds a lot of natural gain. You could also do it with pedals, new pickups/other generic answer. my answer is something you should try first, as you're not wasting any money.

I am a bit of a newcomer to electric guitars, had an acoustic for a while though. How do I "scoop the Mids"? I have a mid knob on my amp, but I have no idea what to do with it.

Also when I turn the gain up a lot, it is usually too fuzzy to hear chords properly. On higher gain, should I palm mute?
Scooping Refers to dropping the mids by turning the knob down.
On a frequency response chart it looks like a scoop:
(Not the best example, But the red line)

I recomend getting some humbuckers (unless it's a fat strat) since single coils don't always have as much output and as you may know are noisy when you turn up the gain.
Yeah, I will try and build my guitar with a humbucker, if possible. I might make it a "super strat".

Thanks for all the help guys, I will try these things to improve my OD sound.
Don't use the overdrive on your amp, or distortion on your amp, or distortion channel on your amp, keep clean, buy pedals.

Actually, pedals aren't clean. You loose some of the original sound of your guitar through all the cables. best method is built in overdrive in the guitar, passive or active.

I have yet to find a guitar with built in overdrive that sounds good.
Guitar->Buffered pedal->As many true bypass pedals as you like->Amp
Is about as clean a signal as you will ever get with a pedal board.
The buffer will lower the impedance and thus allow the signal to travel down longer lengths of cable with less loss (I'm not going to go into the science behind this) - and True bypass pedals have little-to-no tone suck when bypassed, ESPECIALLY if there's an overall buffer before them.
This is why I enjoy active pickups in a bass, My bass signal is buffered and of low impedance right from the output. - I could go use a 100ft Cable If I wished and be safe in the knowledge my signal wont be mangled.
Try it like this:
Mid 0
Bass 2/3
Overdrive FUCKING FULL
Treble 2/3
Add some reverb. Tweak a bit with that, I'm using a Line6 so...
But, fenders are blues guitars unless they have custom pickups... You can't expect to get a Metal sound out of it

Fenders with distortion at best just put out a punk rock sound
To play some heavy face-fuck squeedlee solo metal you need a pointy body guitar
It's really how well you can work with EQ and Gain.
You can't get a creamy wooden tone out of a Fender, but I've known a lot of guitarists that could blow doors down with a Fender.
You mean like Pete Townshend or someone like that?
You mean like Pete Townshend or someone like that?
No not really.
Try setting your EQ like this:
Bass: 6
Mid: 1
Treble: 10
And turn the gain all the way up.
No not really.
then who

not ALL the way up
that'd just be fuzz

Adrian Belew doesn't have a bad tone.

if you do it too much, they start sounding like shit
if you do it too much, they start sounding like shit
Then don't do it too much?
Then don't do it too much?
It really won't do anything unless your pickups happen to be far away for whatever reason. Have them as far up as they can be isn't necessary. You really only need it at a decent distance.
Say hello to the DS-2

He is your new best friend.
Love the sound of the DS-2 - IT has a crazy synth sound going on with some settings. I used a DS-1 on my bass for ages then gave it to my guitarist to go next to his DS-2 :P

Say on a strat.. If you raise the pickups from their standard height, you will get more gain. I've tried it.
