Forces loyal to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad have been accused of mass summary executions after more than 200 bodies were found in a suburb of the nation's capital, Damascus.
The claims of the "execution style" killings in the south-western suburb of Daraya come a day after Damascas was retaken by the Syrian army.
Local activists initially reported finding 79 bodies, but say another 122 more were found later.
Because of media restrictions in Syria the reports cannot be independently verified, but one activists say most were found in houses and basement shelters of residential buildings.
They say the bodies appear to have been shot by troops who had stormed the premises.
"In the last hour, 122 bodies were discovered and it appears that two dozen died from sniper fire and the rest were summarily executed by gunshots from close range," said Abu Kinan, an activist in Daraya.
"Assad's army has committed a massacre in Daraya."
The Daraya Coordination Committee activists' group said in a statement that among those found with shots to the head were a family of eight: three children, their father and mother and three other relatives.
Video released by activists showed numerous bodies of young men side-by-side at the Abu Suleiman al-Darani mosque in Daraya, many with what looked like gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
"A massacre," said the voice of the man who appeared to be taking the footage.
"You are seeing the revenge of Assad's forces from the people of Daraya: more than 150 bodies on the floor of this mosque."
'Shot at close range'
Mohammad Hur, another activist in Daraya, said 36 bodies of young men were found in the morning in one building, along with several badly wounded people who could not be transferred to hospitals in the area because the army had occupied them.
"We are in the process of identifying the bodies and documenting how they died. Initial evidence shows that they were mostly shot at close range in the face, neck and head, execution style," Mr Hur said by telephone.
"Female members from at least two families say that soldiers shot their brothers in front of them," he added.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is based in Britain and headed by dissident Rami Abdelrahman, said it had received reports of dozens of bodies found in Daraya, but it had not yet ascertained how they were killed.
On Saturday, the army overran Daraya, one of a series of large, mostly run-down Sunni Muslim towns that surround Damascus, after three days of heavy bombardment that killed 70 people, according to opposition sources and residents who said most of the dead were civilians.
The attack on Daraya was part of an army campaign to regain control of the outskirts of the capital, a mixture of built-up areas and farmland where rebels had regrouped and relaunched guerrilla attacks on Mr Assad's forces.
Mr Assad belongs to Syria's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam that has dominated power in Syria for the last five decades.
Members of the country's Sunni majority are at the forefront of the uprising.
good fucking lord Assad needs to go
Assad has officially surpassed Ralph Pootawn in the degree to which he must pls go
Jesus christ it's time for an intervention
Seriously there is no reason an invasion can NOT be justified by now. The EU, the UN, the US, I don't give a fuck, just take that son of a bitch out. Lives are being lost.
Assad and the scum that support him need to get dealt with quickly, this whole conflict is a tragedy.
Jesus fucking christ, deploy half a million marines there already.
It's almost an obligation for the United States to intervene, after that bullshit Iraq war.

The militia need to be dealt with, too. They're just as guilty as him now.

Russia and China can go fuck themelseves, get the military over there now.

It isn't that simple, it would be a diplomatic mess. The militia is just as guilty when it comes to massacres like this now, so both parties should be overthrown if there is any intervention even if an intervention isn't likely at all.
how many massacres happened in Syria now
ive lost count

Haha, it's a shame you yanks really think like this, given that you control the damn world. Deploying the troops should be the final frontier. Don't be scared into another war.
God, the situation in Syria seems so fucked.
And nobody cares sadly, and those who do get shit-smacked by Russia and China
If nobody helps, and if the rebels win, Syria is going to have a grudge against the rest of the world.
Starting to look like it isn't so much a civil war but a Religious one.
Damn son, what is this the medieval ages?
It's 2012 and we have this kind of stuff happening across the globe its almost unimaginable

It's already a fucking diplomatic mess so that argue is null and void.

Scared into another war? Someone should be in their simply for the fact that government is scything down their own people like there's nothing fucking to it, sniper fire against civilian targets, it goes beyond massacre, it's sheer sadism at this point.

It'll be an even worse mess, and it could destabilize the entire area around Syria and relations between Russia/China and other countries. There is only something to lose in fully intervening unless Russia and China manage to completely join the boat with the U.N.

Yeah and there's everything to gain by going in because you're gonna be saving the lives of innocent people, Russia and China have no vested interests in Syria other than being able to sell them weapons and shit.
The fact of the matter is the U.N has yet again failed to do anything other than send angry letters, it's a shit organisation when it comes to this sort of shit.
Despite the fact that fellow human lives are completely butchered, many people still oppose intervention because it's "not our business".
It's already business to the West and Russia, Iran, etc. They are wagging a proxy war against Iran and the big powers behind it. The US, Qatar and the Saudis have been giving weapons and support to the rebels just like Russia and Iran have been keeping their boy Assad in place with their assistance.
Military intervention by NATO would fuck shit up very badly and is incredibly short-sighted. Taking sides with a morally ambiguous and heterogeneous opposition, many of whom would otherwise be our run-of-the-mill Sharia-law-loving Jihadist terrorist, is like unilaterally declaring the opposition the new leaders of Syria. Protip: They aren't -- Syrians get to decide who will lead them and nobody else. Not to mention, the situation is very delicate. As in, a wrong move and we will trigger a fun sectarian war for years to come. That's why we shouldn't meddle anymore that we already are.
The 'humanitarian cause' bullshit is nothing more than a cover for a strategic military operation that benefits the West -- a cover that has been used again and again to give some sort of moral high ground to NATO and the rest. Can you imagine the shitstorm if Russia were to send in the fucking cavalry to aid Assad in massacring the rebels and his civilians? Nobody would fucking believe them if they said they were doing it for 'humanitarian causes', or specifically, to stop the rebels from committing horrific acts of violence and terrorism (which they have, mind you). Everyone would have them figured out -- Jeez, these guys sure are acting in their strategic interest!
Don't buy into that shit. They don't care -- both sides don't care. Stop fucking cheering on one vulture over an other. You don't have to take sides between two powers clashing via a proxy war.
And remember: Syria is a secular country, like Libya was (of course, secular in the sense of that region of the world). The rebels leaders, at their core, are theocratic, and will revel in oppressing women and the religious minorities when they get their hands on power. Not to mention, when Assad does get dethroned eventually, it's pretty much guaranteed that a bunch of our lovely rebels will have fun massacring the Alawites as payback, and then maybe they'll have a go at the Kurds and Christians too. Because you know, they have to be good sport, right?
Something to keep in mind while seeing this situation unfold: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jul/12/syrian-opposition-doing-the-talking

Russia has a warm water port which would almost certainly be lost if the militia were to win, China has an oil treaty with the country as well. Russia is probably more likely to be disheveled by intervention (though they're cooperating, so that may not be) but straining relationships with any of the two countries with a sudden and full intervention would be bad.
The lives of those within the country wouldn't be worth an full scale invasion/intervention (I.E more than a no-fly-zone or bombardments) on the global political scale.

I don't give a fuck about the global political stage, people are dying, we should be in their trying to stop the fighting.

It'll end in a cluster-fuck between a mass of U.N countries, Russia, whoever is left alive in Syria, and China. Life has a value that can be variable depending on certain circumstances, and that is unfortunate but inevitable.

I wholeheartedly disagree.
